Durban – Babes Wodumo, the gqom queen who once electrified the music scene with her hit song “Wololo”, is seeking to reclaim her former glory after a tumultuous period marked by scandal and the loss of her husband, Mampintsha.

The 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, has reportedly turned to renowned music promoter Dogg DBN, whose real name is Lindo Buthelezi, for assistance in reviving her struggling career.

Dogg DBN, known for his massive collaborations with other South African musicians like Thukzin whom he helped to rise to prominence, is believed to be a trusted confidant for Babes in her difficult journey.

“Babes Wodumo realised she needed serious help. After the death of her husband, Mampintsha, she was left frustrated. Mampintsha was instrumental in launching her career and ensuring it thrived. His absence has led her to approach Dogg DBN for support,” a source explained.

Another source revealed that Babes, who, in addition to being a musician, is also a reality TV star, is not just sitting back for things to happen automatically.

“She is a strong woman. She detests pity, but pride alone is of little help. That’s why she sought assistance. She has faith in Dogg DBN, having previously worked with Mampintsha,” the source added.

When reached for comment, Babes Wodume, who is also a pastor’s daughter, chose to be a woman of few words.

“I’m alright, I’m fine,” she said, while refusing to confirm or deny if she is working with Dogg DBN for support.

Meanwhile, Dogg DBN has actively used social media to promote Babes’ upcoming performance, scheduled for 31 July in Durban, displaying willingness to help the former Gqom star if she requires his services.

“I’m available if she comes and asks for help,” he said.

Babes Wodumo’s rise in 2016 was a sensation, with her dynamism opening doors until the floodgates of scandals and the tragic death of her musician husband struck. Now, as she navigates the difficult path of rebuilding her career after the loss of her husband, Babes is seeking to reclaim her place in the music industry.

The funeral service of the late ZamaNguni Gumede, mother of the late Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo, took place at the Redhill Cemetery in Durban by Icebolethu Funerals, who also gave her son a dignified sendoff. Her life was celebrated at the L Hall in KwaMashu where Babes Wodumo and her family attended, despite rumours that they were not allowed.

Despite rumorus that Babes Wodumo, her daughter-in-law was barred from attending, she and her family was in attendance and they all gave her a dignified sendoff.

During the memorial service, ZamaNguni Dumede’s family and friends shared their most fond memories of her. A few tears were shed too as her nieces spoke of the amazing aunt she was to them.

“We grew up together, I was older than her by two years. She was a straight and honest talker. Nguni had a good heart, and she loved people,” said Reta Mkhize, a family friend.

“Nguni had jokes and was always laughing and happy. She was great at sewing and made beautiful women’s clothes. She loved fashion and did not want to look like anyone else.”

“She was forced to speak because she loved people, but she was not breathing well. She wanted cold water, but the nurse wouldn’t allow us. She told us she loved us. She said she would wait for her daughter to arrive at the hospital. When they arrived, she screamed for her to hurry and that is when she took her last breath. She died peacefully. She said goodbye to her children and grandchildren,” she added.

One of Zamanguni Gumede’s nieces Nosdoli said at the memorial service,“I went to see Mamkhulu at the hospital, repeatedly. Things were promising. She said she would be back next week. But she is hone. She loved us. I now don’t have an aunt, but I still have a mother. My aunt taught us the importance of family. When we last visited her, we were laughing and joking. Maybe that was her way of saying goodbye. She asked me to greet Sponge [Babes Wodumo’s son] for her. I say rest in peace Mamkhulu.”

Her second niece also spoke about her sense of style and how she inspired her to wear the outfit she wore at her send-off, “She loved us. Even my outfit today was inspired by her. We visited her, and she looked good, even wearing lipstick in the hospital. I am sad, but we will miss you.”

Prior to the funeral, ZamaNguni’s daughter Pinki Gumede, told Daily Sun that her mother’s condition worsened when she saw Babe’s Wodumo’s videos on social media.

“What complicated things were the videos she kept posting on social media sometimes even insulting the family. My mother saw all of that and it worsened her condition. I feel she died with a broken heart. But she’s at peace now,” Pinki told the publication.

Mampintsha’s sister, Pinki Gumede reveals that Babes Wodumo whose real name is Bongekile Simelane didn’t reach out to her late husband’s mother, Zama Gumede before she died in the hospital.

In less than a month after Mandla Mampintsha Maphumo’s passing, his mother also died.

Babes and Zama reconciled at Mandla’s funeral service, but the Gqom queen reportedly didn’t visit Zama in the hospital before her death.

“Despite making peace with MaGumede at Mpintsho’s funeral she never visited her in the hospital and she never phoned her,” Pinky told Daily Sun.

“She has not contacted us and we’ve never contacted her,” she added. Pinky Gumede said her mother died with a broken heart.

“What complicated things were the videos she kept posting on social media sometimes even insulting the family. My mother saw all of that and it worsened her condition. I feel she died with a broken heart. But she’s at peace now,” she said.

Babes Wodumo addressed the fight between her and Zama at Mampintsha’s funeral.

“I want to forgive you for all your sins because I am a child of a pastor, and I am saved. I forgive you. May whatever dispute end today.”

RIP: Mampintsha mom, Zama Gumede’s last moments

ZamaNguni Gumede, mother to Mampintsha has passed away. She passed away on Sunday, 15 January 2023 at the Wentworth Hospital at the age of 64. Her last moments were with her family but was apparently sad that her grandson Sponge Wodumo was not present.

Speaking to the media, her daughter Pinki Gumede recounts her last moments and how she reacted when she was called to the hospital to be informed about her mother’s death.

“She called us at 10 pm to come visit her at the hospital, me and my children. When we arrived she said she wanted to say her last goodbyes. She left us at 11pm,” she told TshisaLIVE.

“She held our hands and gave us all a message. She said she was saying goodbye. Her last words to me were that I should look after the children and she will miss Mampintsha’s son. She said there was no time. She told us she loved us and we should look after ourselves. She said that she was very tired”.

Pinki having lost her brother in December and 3 weeks later losing her mother, is very shattered by this, “I don’t know why they have left me. I am not okay.”

Announcing her death, Pinki told Daily Sun, “Now that she’s gone, I can see that she wanted to bid farewell to us. She told me she was old and that she was leaving. She asked if everyone was around and I said yes. She wanted to see Sponge, Mampintsha’s son and I told her he was not around. I could see the sadness in her eyes and she did not say anything. She gave us her blessing and we spent some time with her. We then left. At about 10h00 I received a call informing me that she is dead,” Gumede said.

Her daughter-in-law Babes Wodumo, who had a rocky relationship with her, paid tribute to Zama and told her to send her regards to Mampintsha.

“RIP Gogo Ka sponge ungikhonzele kumnyeni Wami. lala kahle Magumede,” which translates to, “Rest in peace Sponge’s grandmother. Send my regards to my husband. Rest well MaGumede.”

Her family was in denial that Zama was indeed sick. Nondumiso Simelane, Babes’ sister allegedly does not believe that Zama Gumede is sick because her family did not report this matter to them. She claims that all their efforts go unnoticed because of Pinky, the sister. She even labels her evil.

“If she was really sick, Pinky would call us and tell the family. Why has no one phoned us?” Nondumiso Simelane tells Zimoja. “Pinky has a big problem. She is the evil sister-in-law that nobody wants. She wanted to choose a wife for Mandla and when that didn’t happen, she made sure she made life difficult for everyone. Babes even tried to make peace with the mother-in-law, but Pinky got in the way of that. Babes sent groceries during the funeral arrangements, but she is still ungrateful. She is going around telling people we received Mandla’s life cover, but we didn’t. She is evil.”

Barely a month after her famous son’s death, Mampintsha’s mum ZamaNguni Gumede died after a short illness. She died at age 64 years on Sunday night at Wentworth hospital. The news of her sudden death was confirmed to Daily Sun by Mampintsha’s sister, Pinki Gumede. She said that she had visited her during the day.

When I left her, she seemed to be fine. She was even telling us jokes and we were all laughing. So, when I left her, she was in high spirits and I really thought she was getting better,” said Pinki. But this was not the case because hours later she was summoned back to the hospital.

“I was about to sleep when I received a call from the hospital. I was told to rush to her bedside because she wanted to see us. When I got there, she was already in drips, she was surrounded by the doctors and nurses trying to assist her,” she explained.

“Now that she’s gone, I can see she wanted to bid farewell to us. She told me she was old and that she was leaving. She asked if everyone was around, and I said yes. She wanted to see Sponge, Mampintsha’s son and I told her he was not around. I could see the sadness in her eyes, but she did not say anything. She gave us her blessings and we spent a bit of time with her. We then left. At about 10:00 pm I received a call informing me that she’s dead,” continued Pinki.

She said this is double pain for her. “I am definitely not coping, it’s a double sword for me. I lost two important people within a space of three weeks. But what makes things even harder is that we were not financially prepared for this. As far as policies are concerned, Mampintsha took care of everything. We were still trying to get things in order, but I guess the time was not on our side,” said Pinki.

Mampintsha’s mother had been ill for some time. When Mampintsha passed away she became worse. She could not walk by herself as a result she had to be physically carried.

A few days after Mampintsha’s funeral she was admitted to Wentworth hospital.

Just eeksafter burying her son Mampintsha’s mother, Zamanguni Gumede, has reportedly been hospitalised after suffering a stroke.

Her son, Big Nuz member Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, died in December after also suffering a stroke

According to ZiMoja, Gumede’s health has deteriorated since the death of her son and she is now unable to speak or walk.

Mampintsha’s sister Pinky Gumede told the publication her mother had liver complications since 2016 and the death of her son had taken its toll.

“She is not taking Mandla’s death well. She started feeling ill before him but got worse when he was first admitted to the hospital,” she said.

“The doctor says her liver has been affected and she also has been diagnosed with a stroke. But her stroke is not bad, she will not be disabled if she takes her medication.

She has not been able to eat properly and that is affecting how she takes her medication.”

Pinky says Mampintsha’s death hit her hard. “Even now she is still asking for Mandla and I’ve had to tell her that he is at the airport. She didn’t have diabetes or high blood pressure, nothing. She was fit and even worked out. But this is hard. She needs a private hospital and a psychologist to help her deal with the trauma, so she can move on. At the moment we do not have money to give her special health care and we are. appealing for help,” Pinky adds.

Since Mampintsha’s death, Pinky says they have been afraid to ask Babes Wodumo’s family for help. “They called us to go to the mortuary when he died, but they did not allow us to see his body. Instead, there were police officers with big guns, and that affected uMa. Not being able to see her son’s body has led her not to accept, which is why we are here now,” Pinky says.“I am even scared to ask them for help. It is costing me more than R140 to travel to the hospital every day to see uMa and I am running out of funds. I heard that the Simelane family knows that she is in hospital, but I am afraid of being the one that calls them and be as though I am harassing them. I don’t know what we have done to them. We are not greedy people; I just want her to be okay so she can deal with her son’s death. Even the new teeth that Mandla put on her are starting to rot and the doctor needs to remove them, but he can’t because we don’t have money. I just wanted her to see his body, so she can move on. She keeps asking for Mandla,” Pinky adding that should anyone want to donate they should do so to:SC Bhengu Capitec Acc: 1304420092

Pinky went on to say Zamanguni needed to be admitted to a private hospital and was in need of a psychologist to help her deal with trauma. She appealed to the public for help.

Pinky said she and her family were “too scared” to approach Babes’s family for assistance.

Meanwhile, Babes has been shooting up trends lists since the death of her husband with videos of her performing at nightclubs and her live posts on social media going viral.

Attempts to get comment from Pinky Gumede were unsuccessful at the time of publishing this article. An update will be included once received.

He’s been remembered as a selfless person who helped other musicians to further their careers. Speaking at the memorial, Mampintsha’s father said he was heartbroken and still coming to terms with his son’s death. DJ Tira said Mampintsha’s legacy would live on.

“I didn’t think in my life I would see his picture like this. Even now my heart is still broken but the one thing that would make us go forward is the love you give us.

“I’m glad this house [church] is filled like this because it means the love you have for Mampintsha, Big Nuz, Afrotainment and West Ink is big. There is still a lot of work to be done. Our sister Babes Wodumo must go back to her place at the top.

“Mampintsha was very talented and creative. Everything that was his, you could not compare it to anyone. How many groups in South Africa or across the world vanished for 10 years and when they came back they went to the top? Big Nuz was quiet and came back, and now they have what I think is the biggest song in the country and it’s because of Mampintsha and Danger’s creativity.
