Meet Mzansi’s funniest family, the Nkaones

Members of the Nkoane family have Mzansi wrapped around their finger.

Their YouTube channel, which shows their day-to-day life, has 38 000 subscribers while they also have 150 000 followers on Facebook.

This has attracted so much attention that they have been headhunted to work with one of the country’s biggest producers of reality TV.

Speaking to Daily Sun, David Nkaone said they had risen against the odds.

“When we started, people didn’t know whether we would be able to keep up. They thought we would be a one-hit wonder, but we have proven otherwise,” he said.

“I am not at liberty to say who the producer is, but we are currently in talks to scale up our show, which fans have been asking us to do for months.”

The family was recently trending on social media after one of the boys used a microwave to dry clothes.

David said although he knew his son should not have done it, as putting synthetic material in a microwave was dangerous, he was surprised by the innovation.

“I was honestly stuck between a rock and hard place. A part of me wanted to be a parent and reprimand him, which I did. But another part wanted to try it when no one was home to see if it worked.”

Most reality shows don’t show parents reprimanding children for fear of a backlash, but David said he was not afraid.

“Every family has its own rules that everyone needs to uphold. We hope the video serves as a lesson to other parents that it’s OK to be firm with your child.

“It teaches them what is right and wrong. We balance the good and the bad to show that every family goes through phases,” he added.

All it took was one viral video for recent member of “God’s faves” DJ Uncle Waffles to be catapulted into her dream life and now everybody wants to know who the cool young woman taking the world by storm is!

Uncle Waffles, real name Lungelihle Zwane, captured everyone’s attention a few weeks ago with her DJing skills and she’s mastered how to keep the crowd entertained and engaged with her next-level dance moves.

A viral video of one of her sets where she was dancing to Adiwele, got liked by US rapper Drake and went viral, giving moghel instant fame.

Here are some facts about the DJ, who has captured Mzansi’s attention.

1. She is 21 years old!
   Lungelihle is only 21 years old … Yebo ke le 2000.

2. She’s originally from Eswatini

The DJ was born there and raised by her grandmother. She moved to SA for better opportunities in the entertainment space and is now based here.

   She has also been on TV, hosting the Swaziland music and entertainment show alongside Siyabonga Nsibande and DJ Stunner.

3. The name “Waffles” was a high school joke that stuck
   Though she hasn’t shared the full story, Lungelihle was called Waffles back in high school. The Uncle prefix was a random addition she made.

ANC accuses WC department of dishonesty regarding Gatesville rental homes

The Western Cape Department of Human Settlements has defended itself against an accusation of being underhanded with regard to its Gatesville rental units where some tenants are about to be gifted their homes after living there rent free.

ANC provincial Human Settlements spokesperson Andile Lili made the accusation in a written question to Human Settlements MEC Tertuis Simmers.

Lili said that Simmers had failed to mention in a previous query about the houses that they would soon be handed over to the tenants for free.

In his original question, Lili had wanted to know what measures had been put in place to prevent tenants from defaulting on payments and/or from paying below the market-related value for the department’s rental stock.

Yesterday Lili said: “We learnt from our sources earlier this year that MEC Simmers and the DA leadership in the province planned to hand over the rental units in Gatesville to the tenants for free.

“These tenants have been living in these houses for free for several years at the taxpayers’ expense as the public purse was used to pay rates and maintenance.

“This is another form of DA corruption and patronage. We will take this up with the department through the standing committee for human settlements and if need be we will approach the public protector for investigation,” said Lili.

Lili said that he would bring the matter to the legislature through a substantive motion and called for an investigation against Simmers for concealing information in his replies to his questions.

He said the department had been maintaining the units without receiving anything in return.

In his written response to Lili, Simmers said that the Gatesville rental units had been omitted from the previous response he had given on the issues, as they do not form part of the departmental provincial rental turnaround strategy,

He said a decision was taken to sell the units to the tenants and the department appointed a project management team to prepare the units for sale on a sectional title basis.

“It is envisaged that tenants will be signing offers to purchase later in 2022 and transfers are planned for 2023. The current rental agreements will remain in place until transfer takes place,” said the written response.

Reached for comment yesterday, Simmers said: “These sales are part of our efforts to empower our people with ownership.

“As a caring Western Cape government, we could not allow this injustice to continue. Had the provincial government of 2004/5 followed through on their commitments to sell the units to the tenants, these residents would by now have been proud homeowners with title deeds.

“Ensuring ownership by handing over title deeds is significant, as it gives residents security of tenure, while also restoring the dignity of our people,” said Simmers.
