Rumours of award-winning actress Deli Malinga leaving the show began a few days ago when isiZulu publication iLanga News reported on Thursday, 28 September that the actress might be leaving the show.

The SAFTA-winning actress Deli Malinga recently revealed to Sunday World that there are other roles in the pipeline that she couldn’t mention yet.

“I am shooting a few scenes in a fun drama, but they are nothing like MaMzobe,” she tells the publication.

Here are some of the reactions:

@mjbnkosi: “She’s a good actress but not to replace Deli.”

@JabzinSA: “Looks like the Producer Duma Ndluvo issue.. naku #iMbewu he did the same replaced aboNkululeko. Now it’s the same issue ku #umkhokhaTheCurse then come few months down the line or after two seasons, we will be told that umkhokha uyaphela nini..ai.”

@Khule387: “Ngiyabona Lana kuthiwa she is not happy with certain things and production is not willing to compromise. The best way is for Mvelase to take her, we can’t really have another person playing that character.”

@AfrikanChefZA: “That’s the worst idea. Baby Cele is boring as Gabisile.”

@cj_chauke: “I’d rather they eliminate the character or call up Mme Dawn Thandeka-King as replacement @DawnTKing.”

Uzalo’s Baby Cele (Gabisile) speaks on her death

Actress Baby Cele has said farewell to Uzalo’s Gabisile and is already in the works for another project.

Speaking to the publication, the star reflected on her years playing the infamous Gabisile. Initially, Baby says her character wasn’t meant to deviously steal the show.

“You know what’s funny, when we started she wasn’t a villain. She was someone who wanted to make a difference in KwaMashu. She grew up there, disappeared for years and then came back. A good, spiritual, God-fearing woman and along the way, she changed. But I’m no writer so I didn’t complain,” said Baby.

The star said she is heartbroken to be parting ways with Gabisile as she has never played a character who has made an impact on her. She is also sad to say farewell to the cast and crew of Uzalo, who are like family to her.

“It breaks my heart to be honest with you because I have never played such a character before. Leaving Uzalo is like losing my family. I was telling someone that it’s like having a healthy baby only to be told I have to give it up for adoption. I couldn’t bring myself to watch the last episode,” Baby said.

Baby said that she didn’t have the heart nor strength to watch Gabisile’s final moments on TV before she was axed.

But Baby’s fans need not worry because even though she isn’t permitted to give too many details, the star has a project at e.tv in the works which she will be working on for the next five months.

For the role of Gabisile, Baby had to relocate to Durban. She said though there was some resistance to the move, looking back there weren’t too many problems that got in the way of doing what’s best.

“At first, I thought I was going to face challenges. I had just got married then I had to move. I remember I signed the contract without talking to my husband about it. But afterwards, we spoke about. He was a bit angry for a few minutes but then he agreed,” she said.

She said the move helped her grow spiritually.

“For me to go down there, it was for me to go through my calling. I am a sangoma and also an actress. There was something else t I had to fulfil spiritually which has been in my visions for a period of time. I never understood that it had to take me to go to Durban to fulfil all that,” Baby said.

This is Baby’s 18th year as a sangoma. She gave fans some insight into the world of spiritual and traditional healing, saying you never truly graduate from being a sangoma. She also had a helpful tip for novice sangomas.

“You just need to listen. To me, listening is an art because if you listen, you get the answers,” she said.

Baby Cele-Moloka is gearing up for the airing of her final appearance on Uzalo, as she will be parting way with her iconic and popular character, Gabisile.

Baby Cele-Maloka’s character, Gabisile, is set to conclude her final storyline on SABC 1’s Uzalo this week, where she is expected to face the repercussions of all the wrong she has done to the people of KwaMashu over the years. In an interview with JustNje on Wednesday, 10 February 2021, the actress expressed her gratitude for her time on the show and explained that her exit was far more emotional than she expected.

Baby Cele eflects on emotional departure from Uzalo

Upon learning about her departure, the cast and crew surprised Baby with a farewell party in late 2020, as a way to honour her for her contribution to the show. The actress also explained that although she has left Uzalo, she remains close to the cast and crew members, as they have always given her the respect of being a senior actor and allowed her to perform to the best of her ability whilst on set.

Speaking about her character, Gabisile, Baby claimed that she had drawn inspiration from her mother and sister, who helped portray someone who resonates with the large audience. Baby added that viewers were able to see that despite all the wrong that Gabisile had done, she had done it for the sake of her family – which is the backbone of Uzalo.

She stated, “It was up to me to take what the writers said about Gabisile, to take her in, to understand, do my own research and make her my own. I don’t think she is what they had in mind. I enjoyed it and I was lucky enough to have a brilliant storyline with a brilliant actor like Siyabonga Shibe, because I know on screen, we are magical. Even off-screen, because it’s someone I worked with, it helped a lot working with this person.”

When asked about her plans for the future, Baby shared that she had taken a much-needed break after concluding Uzalo in late 2020 but is now working on a new production. The show is currently being developed by Rous House. She revealed that filming will be concluded in June 2021, and expressed that she is excited for her fans to see her take on a role that is the complete opposite of Gabisile.

Actress Baby Cele-Maloka has explained the reason she’s leaving SABC1’s Uzalo.

Earlier this month, Uzalo confirmed her departure, leaving viewers heartbroken.

Baby, who plays Gabisile Mdletshe on the show, said there was no bad blood between her and the Uzalo production and has landed a role on a new drama to be produced by Uzalo makers, Stained Glass Productions.
Baby said she was taking a break to have enough time to focus on the new role.

“I’ll relocate from KZN to Joburg for a new drama shoot and have more time for me and my family,’’ she said.

“Those who’re too fast to spread news about my character are spoiling my surprises and the fun.”

She said she’ll make a surprise comeback at the end of next year.

“My fans should calm down. I’ll still appear on their favourite soapie until the beginning of next year and disappear for a while and return.”

She said her bosses were good to her.

“I’d like to thank Stained Glass Productions for giving me a break on a daily soapie and time to heal,” she said.
