Sonia Mbele Opens up about Finding Love After divorce

Sonia Mbele has opened up about her love life and how she is coping after the divorce. She recently took to the radio to speak about her divorce from businessman Leslie Sedibe.

Sonia has always been vocal about her failed marriage to the businessman which also saw her quitting her job at Generations.

Speaking to Kaya 959’s Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduk she said, “You know when something is not working and you still want to make it work in any way. I remember being on the biggest show in the country and not being able to watch it because it made people around me uncomfortable. It became deeper.”

Sonia has since found love at the hands of her American bae who she spoke about in detail in an interview with Zimoja.

“Yes, I am in a long-distance relationship. My man is based in New York. I have been burned and I prefer to keep my love life away from the brand Sonia. It’s taken me a few years to understand that I need to protect the things that are important to me. All I can say is that he loves me more than I love him, which is very important to me. I have been through my fair share of hurt and have protected my heart for the longest time. Now it’s time to let go. I have learned that it’s important to enjoy being loved and enjoy someone who appreciates me for who I am. He doesn’t know that back home, I’m called Ntombi and he doesn’t care about what I do for a living, he genuinely loves me for who I am. Love is a beautiful thing. I enjoy dating, having fun, and having the small things in life. I am always traveling. I see him almost every month or every second month. Long-distance relationships can be tricky but we make it work. We have been doing great since 2019,” she told the publication.

She got married to her ex-husband in 2006 after dating for a couple of years but got divorced after 8 years of marriage in 2014.

The single mother of 4 told Times Liv the reason why her marriage ended. “I don’t know of anyone who willingly walks away from their marriage if they still want to make it work. But the truth is Leslie and I were two different people who wanted different things. Yes, we loved each other… I became the person that he wanted me to be and lost myself in the process.”

In other good news, Sonia Mbele is going to be a grandmother. Her son revealed on Instagram a while back that he and his girlfriend Reokeditswe were expecting. Donell shared a small clip of him rubbing his girlfriend’s belly and said, “can’t wait to meet your pumpkin pie.” Then he shared another image of them together with their growing baby bump.

Mbele says many assumed she married Leslie Sedibe for money, but that was not true.

Veteran actress Sonia Mbele recently spoke about how she was forced to quit her role on SABC 1 soapie, Generations, by her former husband Lesile Sedibe, the erstwhile chief executive officer of the South African Football Association (Safa).

Mbele played the role of Ntombi, who’s love interest in the soapie was Sibusiso Dhlomo, played by Menzi Ngubane.

According to Mbele, who was interviewed on Phat Joe’s show, Cheeky Palate, she says that Sedibe did not appreciate the on-screen romance between her and Ngubane.

Sedibe also forbade Mbele from watching herself on the show, eventually making her quirt the show.

Mbele and Sedibe tied the knot in 2006 after dating for a couple of years. Their fairytale marriage became sour and was hanging by a thread, until the couple – who have three children – decided to call it quits in 2014.

Also on the show, Mbele shared that her mother had to intervene in an attempt to curb Sedibe’s controlling ways. The actress further explained that many assumed she married Sedibe for money, but that was not true.

She says she married him for love.

“People have always said ‘Sonia married for money’. I’m like where? That guy earned a salary. He went to work, would take his suitcase with him, come home, and then earn his salary at the end of the month. He was never a BEE or tenderpreneur, we both earned a salary,” Mbele said.

Mbele almost broke down during the show but held back her tears and continued venting. She said their marriage and divorce was very ugly.

“Who am I married to? When you wake up and then feel like ‘I love you today, but then I hate you tomorrow’ type of think. It doesn’t make sense how it could be that ugly.

“There was a time when we did not speak for years, and I am comfortable talking about this now, but there was a time when I wasn’t. The reason I am comfortable about this now is because my kids are grown and old enough to know, decipher, assess and decide…what I am saying now will no longer be a shocker to them,” she said.

Phat Joe’s Cheeky Palate tackles many of societal stigmas and pokes into conversations that many, even his guests, always try to avoid. Who better than Phat Joe, a man marred with many controversies, to stir up these type of conversations that often raise an eyebrow or two.

His latest guests were Skeem Saam actor Cedric Fourie, Joe Kazadi, actress Sonia Mbele, and psychologist Buyisile Mncina. These guests touched on the challenges parents face when it comes to co-parenting and single parenthood.

In the latest episode of Cheeky Palate Sonia Mbele’s marriage to ex-husband lawyer Leslie Sedibe became the highlight of the show and as always Phat Joe’s questions triggered Sonia.

The panel was talking about finances in raising children and that topic became a bit too personal for Sonia, as she was once accused of marrying Leslie for his ‘millions.’

Speaking about the nitty-gritty of their marriage, Sonia revealed that her ex-husband Lelsie made her quit her job on Generations as Ntombi because he was not comfortable with seeing her getting intimate with another man. Sonia played Ntombi on the previous Generations from 2003 up until 2009. Her reason for quitting the show was because her relationship with onscreen husband Sibusiso Dlomo, played by Menzi Ngubane was too uncomfortable for Leslie.

Sonia then revealed that he started off by restricting her from watching the soapie to then asking her to quit. His controlling ways were too much for Sonia to handle so she then had her mother to mediate to try and find common ground.

Sonia Mbele On Why She Stands With Women Who Have Been Through The Most

In most cases your own experiences teaches you empathy. This is exactly why Sonia Mbele shared a post on Instagram about standing with women who have been through it all.

Quite a number of women in the entertainment industry have been sharing their sad stories on social media. The likes of Penny Lebyane, Lerato Moloi, Lorraine Moropa, and many others have opened up about the pain they have suffered years ago or in the not so distant future.

Just recently, another female personality, Norma Gigaba has been trending for all the sad reasons. There has been allegations that she damaged a Mercedes Benz G Wagon which belonged to Malusi Gigaba’s friend. It is reported that she got angry after finding out that her husband was cheating on her and she spend a night behind bars after smashing the car.

In some instances, when things like these happen to women, words like karma, drama queen, gold digger, bitter, petty are sometimes thrown around. It takes empathic individuals like Sonia to look at things from a different angle, and feel sorry for the women who are going through something.

As someone who has went through painful events herself, Sonia feels sorry for fellow women. “It may not make sense to some…but it makes sense to us…when I say “us”. I’m talking to and about women who have been through the most! Women who have had to appear sane to those who’ve never been tested nor tried,” she said.

Although she doesn’t condone some behavior, the actress and entrepreneur understands that at some point we all need someone who can stand with us. “Listen I’m not condoning anyone, anything or any behavior. But I know I had to stand on my own when all I needed and wanted was for someone to “see me”! Not only my struggles or my faults, but also my pain,” she concluded.
