Gabriel Mogashoa is a multi-award-winning composer, broadcaster, and MC who has emceed for over 150 events nationwide, worked and met with every South African celebrity and politician you can imagine, from DJ Black Coffee, Bonang Matheba, NastyC, Khanyi Mbau, the late Winnie Mandela, to Black Motion and many more.

”Mr Gab” or “Gab Mapiano” as he is affectionately called by industry heavyweights and his fans chatted to ZAlebs about how Covid-19 has affected him, what he’s currently busy with and what are his plans for the future…

Here are some facts about the popular MC:

How did you get into the entertainment industry?
Well I’m a musician, M.C, broadcaster and an all-round entertainer. As a musician and a Pastors kid, I started playing in church and that just became a part of me. I then furthered my studies in music because I wanted to teach music.

As an MC; I remember in a UL(University of Limpopo) fresher’s ball, Phila Mazibuko and Bonang Mateba were booked as MC’s but they kinda arrived late ,now the promoter was like “bro don’t u wanna open for Teargas” and I stood in for Phila Mazibuko and on arrival I had fallen in love and killed it .

As a broadcaster I started my radio career at Radio Turf were I was the station compiler, producer and host of the drive show. Then I moved to commuter radio, then I joined Capricorn FM as a producer and presenter of “The Royal Movement Show” which I hosted with King Bash.

You also run a music school in your home province, tell us about more about that…
Ok I have a non-profit organization called “Undisputed Music Arts and Academy” where we empower young kids and train them orally and theoretically on music . I’m currently running the school on my own pocket as we are still outsourcing sponsorships, we have close to about 24 kids currently in the programme and we seek to grow and develop as many kids as we can.

It’s a way to give back to the community and also give the kids a chance to pursue a career in music. Not every kid is born to be a Doctor, Teacher etc. but if identified at a young age and taught music, they can live off music and have a successful career. “So that’s the dream.”

How has Covid-19 affected you, how are you making a living at the moment?
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all of us in all different ways. As for me, indeed it has cut off some of my financial income as we are not doing gigs anymore and are locked in, but then again. It’s been an opportunity to explore other avenues to stay relevant and visible in the industry and explore online exposure. I have been
Surviving on grace honestly! It’s just been survival of the fittest and I guess a few projects I’ve worked on lately. But the impact has been devastating and eye opening for us, to not only focus and rely on music but have other financial avenues.

You’ve met so many celebrities, performed on ETV&SABC, broadcasted for several radio stations and emceed at many events…what’s been your fondest memory and which celebrity meet and event stands out for you?

My fondest memory was headlining the 2019 Durban-July. I think I emceed 4 Marques, 2 pre parties including the BET pre-party. It was the craziest weekend ever and killing it on those platforms just made me realize I could kill it on any platform. The experience of being recognized was just unbelievable.

Hosting with Khanyi Mbau was like my best ever MC experience and she was a great co-master ceremony. I mean I have done countless gigs with her…she’s like a big sister to me, because she lets me, be me. She’s the best!

Mzansi left speechless after man lies on national TV about ice cream #DateMyFamily

What is the common thing that almost if not all women have to say about men? Well, we believe that it is most probably lying.

Almost if not all lie a lot. Maybe this is because woman fall in love with their ears hence there is a song by an American artist which says “whisper sweet nothings in my ear.”

Viewers of Date My Family saw this theory of men being liars at first hand on Sunday evening on the reality show.

This was after the young man who had come on to the reality show looking for love made a very rookie mistake.

Blaq Diamond has reigned supreme after securing their spot at the top of the MTV Base’s Hottest New Wave list. The well-deserved win for the boys has gotten them to the top of the trends list and we couldn’t be more proud.

Blaq Diamond is a duo consisting of Ndumiso Mdletshe and Sphelele Dunywa affectionately known as Ndu Browns and Danya Devs respectively. The boys hail all the way from Ladysmith KwaZulu-Natal and are shaking the game with their new and unique sound. Their sound is really kind of hard to miss because of their ability to infuse Afro Pop and Hip/Hop, roping in a new audience to vibe to their vernacular sound.

It only makes sense for them to be at the top because they currently have the hottest song which is topping the airwaves and charts across the country with Summer Yomuthi.

Side note: They also got applauded for having Babes Wodumo feauture in a music video without Mampintsha in it.

The much-heated debate started with the duo sitting at number 6 and this sparked an uproar on social media as fans expected the musos to be in the top 3 at least. The bottom 5 new wave artists are 10. Benny Chill 9. Hanna 8. Tumi Tladi 7. Maglera Doe Boy 6. Indigo Stella.

Proudly announcing the top 5, MTV took to their Twitter account to announce the artists, “…at number 5 we have @TheReal_25K on the #HMCsNewWave list. How do you feel about this? Did he give us enough work in 2020 to justify this?”

“At number 4 we have @DeeKoala1 repping females everywhere on the #HMCsNewWave list doing better than most gent, she can’t miss!”

“At number 3 we have @LucasRaps_SA with an ungodly flow, banger delivery and serious commitment to the game. What song do you feel put him on the map?”

“At number 2 we have the peoples champion with @TouchlineTruth. What do you feel is more important, an artist who speaks your truth in their music or makes bangers that make you forget them?”

“At number 1 we have @blaqdiamond150 representing the new school of Hip Hop.”

Last year the celebrated music duo came out victorious as they won the much-contested Record Of The Year award at the final episode of the 26th edition of the South African Music Awards. The Afro-pop group closed the 5-day ceremony by winning the ROTY category with their hit ‘Ibhanoyi’, which was voted for by the public.

They are definitely giving these other artists a run for their money. They are also nominated at the MTV MAMA‘s for Best Group in AFRICA!

Mzansi celebs who’ve lost their loved ones this week
South Africa is currently going through the second wave of the global pandemic of COVID-19, and unlike the first wave which was surrounded around mysticism. The second wave is proving that this year might as well have been a continuation of 2020. This article is written based on testimonials of some of our favorite ZAlebs that have lost loved ones this week alone. It has been stressed and it needs to be stressed again, stay home.

First to have revealed that they lost loved ones was Zakes Bantwini. The acclaimed musician and producer might have landed on tweeps’ unfavourable list for the manner in which he decided to reveal that he has allegedly lost four loved ones due to the virus- or was it load-shedding? But in all seriousness, loss is loss and out deepest condolences to the Madida family.

Another musician to have revealed that they lost a loved one was “Jerusalema” vocalist, Nomcebo Zikode. The ‘Xola Moya Wam’” songstress revealed in a touching post in the early hours of the morning that she has not only lost one, but two loved ones to the virus.

The musician is currently on her world tour, which has resulted in her meeting some of our fave African stars including footballing soccer legend, Didier Drogba. A meeting she posted on social media that was speculated to have been more than a meeting but a teaser of possible relationship announcement. Now we hope the speculations to be true, so we know that Nomcebo has broad shoulders to cry on for comfort.

Another ZAlebs- well kind of- that announced the passing of dear ones is none-other-than Khaya Dlanga. Khaya has had a week and a half this past week, which would explain why he did not take these news to Twitter. Following his moemish-of-the-week moment after he threatened legal action for being called out for allegedly being a brown-envelope vaccine recipient. Then going on to involve “amaten-ten” special into the whole situation, and the failure to just apologize- basically, he has been going through it.

To top of an already eventful week for him, he announced that he too lost loved ones this week. In his post Dlanga wrote in part that:

“In December we lost four family members. Over the last week we lost another two. One of the people we lay to rest yesterday is my uncle. His voice alone used to give me such a sense of comfort. I leaned on him about family matters because he was both a man of reason and great empathy.”

Mzansi man who loved yellow-bones living in serious poverty after he blew R1 million in 6 months

He received R1 million payout from the Road Accident Fund and blew it within six months

Teboho, A man from one of the poorest suburbs in South African received an R1 million payout from the Road Accident Fund but blew it within six months.

His brother Tshepo narrated the story to Mzansi Magic’s I Blew It show.

My brother said he was only told about the payout long after Teboho started spending it.

He told me he had received a payout long after he had started spending it. He told me that he had received R1 million

Tshepo said his brother did not have a girlfriend before the payout:

Before he had money, he didn’t have a girlfriend. When he got money, he found a beautiful girl. Whenever they went out, he would spend R25,000 and I could compare my girlfriend to his and it was easy to see who was better looking.

When he was renting in Senaoane, he was sleeping on a be that I gave him. Under the bed were expensive shoes and clothes that he bought, statements from the bank and coins. The space under the bed was serving as his wardrobe. But In my heart I was asking myself, why can’t he buy a two-plate stove and some furniture instead of buying expensive shoes and eating out all the time.

I remember one day I asked why he misuses money, and he said because I want to die. He said I want to spend my money and die. He said I felt a lot of pain for that money.

I realised his money was running out because whenever Teboho showed up, he used to buy expensive whiskies, but he suddenly started buying cheaper beer. I expected him to buy a case, but he would buy two and we share

Agnes, Teboho’s sister in law said Teboho told him that his money had run out and accused his brother Tshepo of withholding his money. The money did not last six months.

Teboho says he has regrets

Right after the accident, they registered my name at Road Accident Fund (RAF). After receiving it, I started spending.

I regret taking Tshepo to the bank. It was not supposed to turn out that way, but what I would want to say to people is that: Don’t trust people close to you. You can love them but don’t trust them.
