Actress Nomvelo Makhanya fires shots at Scandal!?

South African actress Nomvelo Makhanya was introduced to the country as the spoiled and troubled Lindiwe Ngema on e.TV’s Scandal! However, after a decade of playing the character, in 2022, Makhanya surprised many when it was confirmed that she was leaving the soapie.

At the time, it was believed that she was leaving the soapie due to jealousy by her boyfriend considering that she had matured within the world of the story. However, Nomvelo following the confirmation of her exit has made it clear that the decision to leave the soapie was entirely her own. As reported:

“I’m definitely not looking to be going into any “soapie” work anytime soon…I want to explore other things & being on a soapie won’t give me the time to do what I want. But also, if it’s part of God’s plan for me to be on a soapie, I’d probably stay for 6-12 months max,” wrote IndAfrica.

While she initially was coy about her reasoning for leaving the show, it took a couple of months for Makhanya to reveal the real reason she was ready to leave. Firstly, she asserted that the decision was not hers and that the soapie had written her out of the story without her knowledge.

But then she went to share that:

“I have been wanting to leave, I have been wanting to leave that place. For me, it was something I have been praying about. When it finally happened it really really felt like God was removing me from that toxic, toxic environment,” said Nomvelo Makhanya.

At the time, e.TV and the soapie had denied any knowledge of having a toxic work area. However, in light of the recent scandal, it seems that Nomvelo might have been right after all. As reported recently:

The show recently announced that Sello Sebotsane’s ex-wife Shoki Mmola, had joined the show as Reverend Prudence Molepo. According to the show, Prudence is a woman of the cloth who has wholly given her life to the faith. She holds herself in high regard and expects others to do the same for themselves.

But, she stands on moral high ground to mask her own flaws. The Reverend is a strict mother and can often be too hard on her children. In her eyes, they cannot be failures because they were birthed by a woman who is moulded in the image of God.

Avid watchers of the show are appalled by Scandal’s decision to cast Sebotsana after he was accused of domestic violence…

Shoki and Sello were married for 10 years, until their nasty split in 2018, after abuse allegations leveled against Sebotsane. During a recent interview with Drum Magazine, she revealed that she and her children suffered abuse during the marriage.

But one person who is not surprised and is actually gloating about the matter is none other than Nomvelo. The star took to Twitter to share a subtly shady post about everything done in the dark coming into the light, which can be assumed was a dig at the naysayers about her own claims.

“I’ve been praying, wanting to leave that place and for me it was something I had really been praying about so when it finally happened, it really felt like God was removing me from the toxic environment,” she said. “I probably would have killed myself. There was a 90% chance. That’s how toxic that place was,”she said.

She also asked her fans not to feel sorry for her because she’s actually happy that this happened.

Their statement further said that as a production they’ve always communicated an open door policy for all their cast and crew for any matter or situation whether it being professional or personal.

“To our knowledge, as a production we’ve had a great run of 10 years with the actor, Nomvelo Makhanya, and we appreciate the work she put in on her character as Lindiwe,” ‘Scandal!’Production – Ochre Media stated.

They also said the exit of the character was purely dictated by the story. They said the character had run its course on the show and therefore as the producers and writing team of the show, they ended the character’s journey to allow them opportunities to explore other avenues as storytellers. “Ending characters is always bitter-sweet for us as production especially with an actor like Nomvelo Makhanya because she grew up in the show but it also gives us an opportunity for new stories for the future and new opportunities for remaining cast members,” it concluded.

Actress Nomvelo Makhanya, who plays Lindiwe Ngwena on evt soapie Scandal! opens up about her onset romance with husband Nhlamulo Maseko (role played by Mathews Rantsoma)

On Scandal! Lindiwe married a long-time reformed criminal and forex trader, charming boyfriend Nhlamulo, who trapped her into criminal life. On her graduation day, Lindiwe got arrested after police found a card cloning machine in her house.

Despite sharing cosy and romantic scenes on our screens, shooting these scenes is not as easy as it seems since they both share different lovers in real life. Lindiwe revealed that she was never troubled with getting intimate with Nhlamulo since day one because they have known each other since high school. However, she mentioned that due to his bad breath, she had to give him breath mints constantly.

Since the first day, I have always been comfortable sharing intimate scenes with Nhlamulo (Mathews) because I have known him offset since our high school days. We agreed to play along with the script and express ourselves in the roles. From day one, we just said, let’s play; whatever comes, comes. I guess one disclaimer I’ve given him was just the breath mints, but that’s just standard.”- Nomvelo Makhanya

Speaking about the romantic scenes, Mathews revealed that the couple had honest conversations about kissing and touching.

“We had to talk about such scenes, what we are comfortable with and what we are not, whether she is comfortable with me going to extremes or not and most importantly how our real-life partners take it”

Struggling to live up to his on-screen character standards, Mathews revealed that he created a false perception that his on-screen character is the same in real life.

“I am opposite to Nhlamulo you see on screen. Mathews, in real life, is not as romantic as the role he plays in Scandal! I have seen many women throwing themselves at clueless me thinking I am the same as Nhlamulo, guys, I’m not romantic.”

After joining Scandal! as a teenager, Nomvelo Makhanya has grown into a woman playing the character of Lindiwe Ngema.

The 25-year-old actor’s portrayal of the character has been approached with genuine ingenuity so much that what was supposed to be a threemonth story arc turned into nine years. Hailing from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal, Makhanya joined the show at 16. “It’s been a roller-coaster, but there have been a lot of growth that has taken place. Even in my craft I have grown as well. When I look at old videos of when I first started on Scandal! I cringe,” Makhanya admits.

“My family didn’t understand it at first and when I got it my parents thought it was a phase. Along the way I have grown as a performer. It’s fun to be doing something that you are passionate about. My love for acting comes from doing theatre and there is a saying that goes ‘once you experience the theatre, there is no going back’. I wouldn’t trade this for anything.”

When she joined the show as the sharp-tongued daughter of Zinzile (Gcina Nkosi) and Mlungisi Ngema (Patrick Mofokeng), Makhanya was a grade 10 pupil at National School of Arts (NSA) in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

“I remember not wanting to go for the audition and one of my classmates encouraging me to go so that we experience a professional audition, because at NSA we will only audition for plays.

“When I got there, I realized how unprepared I was because one other girl had prepared a Zulu monologue. I didn’t know what we were supposed to do and I was stressed out.

“When I got to the audition room the casting director had no time for monologues and we improvised. That was amazing and I got it.”

Makhaya’s character has recently moved to the forefront of the storyline. The skhanda (gangster) love storyline with her Forex trader boyfriend Nhlamulo Maseko (Matthews Rantsoma) has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. Last week, the story pivoted into a dramatic twist that saw Lindiwe and her mother Zinzile arrested for fraud during her graduation party, as Nhlamulo bolted.

Makhaya loves sinking her teeth into such juicy material and playing opposite Rantsoma has been a dream. “I was very excited when I found out that I was going to be working with Matthews because it was full circle for us. We once met at the Market Lab and did an acting exercise together in one of the classes – then I dropped out,” Makhaya says.

“This storyline pushed me as a performer because Lindiwe the character has grown up so much and so has Nomvelo.

Makhanya’s career is also growing as much as her character Lindiwe. She stars in the new Netflix film I Am All Girls. The movie follows the chilling journey of two detectives in a race against time as they try to bring down a global child sex trafficking syndicate running in SA.

“I had auditioned for the same character at a younger stage, but the production wanted to give me a bigger role. So, I ended up as the teenage version of that character.

“It was fun and a different experience to what I’m used to.

I’m used to shooting in studio all my life and this was on location. I had to fully embody this character and I went through some boxing training. That was dope. The physical sense of it was so different to how we do things in studio.”

The mystery-thriller was filmed in 2018 and also stars Hlubi Mboya, Mothusi Magano, and Masasa Mbangeni. “I remember almost two years ago, there was a Netflix thing that I auditioned for. I got the callback, but didn’t make it to the final round. I remember how hurt I was.

“But not knowing that everything is aligning as it should be and this film will premiere on Netflix.

So, sometimes we want to cry for things that are not meant for us, not knowing that there are bigger blessings coming our way.”

Makhanya has been an outspoken advocate of mental health.

In 2019 she, for the first time, spoke openly with Sowetan about her admission to a psychiatric hospital as a result of living with mental illness.

She was diagnosed with depression, bipolar and anxiety at age 20 in 2016. Makhanya admits that the pandemic has been challenging, but she is in a good place mentally.

“This Covid-19 period has been tough. I tested positive sometimes last year and I’m glad to be alive,” she says.

“Mentally, I’m in a really great space and everything seem to be aligning in my life right now.”

Tonight, e.tv’s much-loved soapie Scandal! is going to pull a shocker. Lindiwe, played by actress Nomvelo Makhanya, is going to get arrested during her graduation ceremony.

Lindiwe has been through a lot in life and turned a new leaf to become the responsible young woman she is today.

But according to the channel, her past will come back to haunt her and her family

The channel shared a sneak peak with the publication and said before the ceremony Javas walks in and asks Mlungisi about credit card fraudsters.

“The problem is there are always people protecting them,” Javas can be heard saying.

During graduation, the venue is well-decorated and people are dressed to the nines. Everyone is happy for Lindiwe. Her sister Omphile is MC and her maternal grandmother lands from KZN.

Gloria makes a speech, highlighting all the rebellious things Lindiwe has done, leaving everyone stunned. An irritated Omphile then cuts her short.

Meanwhile, Lindiwe’s father Mlungisi pulls her aside and tells her about the conversation he had with Javas about her boyfriend. He wants answers.

Then her boyfriend Nhlamulo walks in. Zinzile makes her speech and Ndlokovu is still disturbed. There’s music playing and people are dancing.

Mlungisi then makes a vote-of-thanks speech, telling her daughter how proud he is.

Then everyone goes silent as Javas walks in and tells Lindiwe that she’s under arrest.
