Less than a week into Big Brother Mzansi, a contestant has already dropped out. Keamogetswe “QV” Motlhale left the reality show due to mental health issues.

The 23-year-old from Mahikeng, North West, said she was not in a good state and needed to work on herself. She left the house on Wednesday, 26 January, just days after its premiere on Sunday.

Speaking to her housemates, she said: “I want to be vulnerable with you guys but it’s hard. I feel like for me to progress, I probably need to speak to someone I’m safe with,” she said.

“I’ve spoken to Big Brother and he advised me to give it 24 hours. I tried, but it just keeps getting worse.”

A day before leaving, she opened up about having been a victim of sexual abuse, which touched her housemates and viewers.

“Before the age of seven, I had already experienced s.e.xual abuse by three different men,” she said.

She then shared how she was raped by a friend’s brother.

QV took to social media to say she was grateful.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity, that has always been my childhood dream. For that, I’ll never take the moments for granted.”

Mzansi Magic also released a statement about QV leaving the house.

“QV has bid farewell to her fellow housemates and has also expressed her gratitude to the production team for the opportunity to be in the house.

“A psychologist is working with her to ensure a smooth transition back into the outside world and guide her through her journey going forward,” it read.

DiepCity actors paid peanuts

DiepCity actors paid peanuts

Trouble is brewing on the set of the popular Mzansi Magic telenovela DiepCity after cast members this week complained about being exploited and underpaid by the production house.

Some prominent cast members on the show are allegedly being paid a measly R350 to R400 per day, way below the acting industry pay standards.

This amounts to less than R10 000 a month if the actor is on set every weekday.

According to a report on the website Mybroadband.co.za, a main actor earns between R25 000 and R60 000 a month.

Three sources, including two lead actors on the show, revealed that they had approached their agencies to set up meetings with the Black Brain Picture production house’s Mandla Ngcongwane, who is popularly known as Mandla N, to discuss the issue.

As the production crew, we have to deal with actors and actresses complaining that they can’t get to set because they don’t have money [for transport] or that they can’t pay for electricity or they don’t have food. And they are scared to speak up because most of them are industry newbies.

“It is just sad because last time a cast member raised concerns, they had a heated blow-out with Mandla and they got fired.”

A lead actress on the show revealed that Themba Sibanyoni, who plays Danger, was allegedly involved in an altercation that almost became physical after he confronted Ngcongwane and asked for the R350 a day amount to be reviewed.

“Sibanyoni is new in the industry, but he is very talented. He won an SA Film and Television award, proving how good he is. You will be shocked that he is one of the cast members who get paid R350 a day. He tried to raise this [issue], but it almost turned physical when he approached Mandla,” she added.

Ngcongwane denied that the production house paid the main actors only R350 a day. There is no actor who can earn R350 to R400 a day. Those are probably the extras [who earn that little].

Black Brain Picture production house’s Mandla Ngcongwane Ngcongwane added that there were different pay levels for the cast members: “Remember that agencies rob people as well. We work with agencies; we don’t work directly with [these] people because it is not professional.

“So, obviously, there would be discrepancies with other people. Money is always like that.”

He did confirm that Sibanyoni had taken some time off from the show, but denied that they had a fight before he left.

He is part of the show, but right now he is off a bit because his character does not have a storyline. Danger was never written in the show. He was an extra and he is going to be written into the show next season. He was growing his character … so that was his situation. He was never part of the show. He was never part of the cast.
Black Brain Picture production house’s Mandla Ngcongwane.

He added that some of the roles were added on the show as extras, but the characters grew. They were meant to be given better roles and written in with main roles next season.

“Danger is talented and has a good future ahead of him if he keeps his head straight, which is the hardest thing to do for talent.

“Extras and actors are different. Sometimes you will get a big role, but you will never get what the main actors are being paid … remember, 70% of our cast are all newcomers and you [have to] understand that, because they are newcomers who then blow up, you can’t expect [them] to earn the same as Dawn Thandeka King. It would be an insult,” he said.

King plays the role of Mashenge on DiepCity.

Another source added that she was among the cast members who received decent remuneration.

“Our agents really negotiated [good remuneration deals] for some of us. Even though I am not entirely happy [with my pay], I am better off [than others] and I am due for another [round of] negotiations for better pay, with my agent,” she said.

“It would really help a lot of people on the show to have this [low pay issue] out there so that the production house can at least change things, because a lot of us love the show. We don’t want to have to leave because of money,” she added.

Various agencies that represent the cast members are set to request a meeting with Ngcongwane soon, during which they will raise their concerns about the pay discrepancies.

Family and friends of late veteran actor Patrick Shai gathered at the Soweto Theatre to bid him farewell.

Shai took his own life last Saturday, aged 66.

Police confirmed to a local publication and said the late actor took his own life and his body was discovered by his wife in the garage of his Dobsonville home.

The veteran actor’s career spanned over decades and he was part of many productions on South African’s television. Shai featured in shows such as Generations, 7deLaan, Skeem Saam, Uzalo and The River. He also had an extensive feature film resumé which included Cry, the Beloved Country and Critical Assignment.

The actor has been praised by fellow colleagues as man who was very passionate about his craft. Fellow colleague Nambitha Mpumlwana spoke fondly of the late veteran at his memorial held on Thursday at The Market Theatre.

She said Patrick became her hero and her brother.

“I played Patrick’s wife quite a few times and I played his friend in real life, he played my hero. He held up my pedestal, he allowed me to stand behind him when we had tough negations in productions. He was not afraid to be the target so that we can rise. He allowed us to stand tall on his shoulders… he was my brother.”

Shai was also an activist against gender based violence.

LaConco Opens Up About Her Relationship With Jacob Zuma

The Real Housewives of Durban are back with a bang and we love to see it. The second season of the show premiered today exclusively on Showmax and topped the Twitter trends list.

Nonkanyiso ‘LaConco’ Conco, who was very private about her marriage with former president Jacob Zuma during the first season of the show, has decided to finally speak about it this season.

The reality show star attracted the attention of Mzansi after it was widely reported that she was in a relationship with the former statesman. The ex couple had a son together, and Laconco gave birth to him on April 12, 2018.

In the first episode Laconco surprised Sorisha with a visit to have a heart-to-heart with her. A teary-eyed Laconco explained why their marriage ended.

There were a lot of people who meddled in their love and made it a public affair, LaConco said. “The position I am in… I found love and I stayed true to that love. But unfortunately, there were people who had an interest in that love and made it a public thing when it was not my intention,” she said.

She also revealed that she is raising her son with her mom. “No one gets into a relationship, especially if you are young, to face circumstances that I went through. I had to come to a point where I had to accept the situation and these are the circumstances. Okay this is it,” she added.

LaConco expressed her respect for Zuma. “I never knew I would be at a stage where I am raising my son with my mom. I never fell in love… to be at this situation I am at today. I don’t think the scars will ever heal,”

Prior to their conversation Sorisha had met up with Annie Mthembu who revealed that LaConco is single. “I don’t know if she is who she says she is or who she pretends to be. I don’t know if that makes sense…?” said Annie.

This angered Twitter users who said she is too invested in Laconco’s love life. @FeloMahapa tweeted ” I dont like uAnnie. She’s condescending. Why does LaC have to be a wife to teach you about the culture she has known and embraced her entire life? And why is she so obsessed about LaC’s love life?#RHODurban

LaConco, on RHOD always obeyed the Zuma family’s instructions to keep their family name out from the reality show. They believed that she accepted the offer to star in the reality show because she had a hidden agenda against them, “Already the Zuma name is being talked about almost every day in the media. We don’t want any drama as the family. Enough is enough. But we warn her not to bring the Zuma name into disrepute or else she will regret (it). We are really tired now as a family of people who tarnish our name and get away with it. But I’m not in any way saying she will do that,” said Jacob Zuma’s nephew Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma to Briefly

“She has the right to do whatever she wants to do as long that doesn’t cause pain to other people. All I’m saying is that she must not say or do things that might harm the Zuma family name, which I think was the ticket for her to get chosen for that role,” he added.

SK Khoza has gushed over his brother, Abdul Khoza’s exceptional acting skills and has given him his much deserved flowers. Abdul stars in the hit Showmax series Hlomu: The Wife and embodies the role of Nqobizitha Zulu, 1 of the 8 Zulu brothers who are in the taxi business.

From the very first episode, viewers were left in awe over how natural Abdul Khoza was as Nqoba. It’s as almost as if that is his true character. Just like Bonko Khoza who plays Mqhele Zulu – if a character is hated or loved to the point where a person forgets that they are just acting, then that person is a natural.

Patrick Shai’s wife attacked after telling people to stop judging her late husband

The wife of the late actor Patrick Shai who took his own life last Saturday has pleaded with people not to judge her husband saying no one is perfect.

Masechaba Shai was addressing those who attended her late husband’s memorial at Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg on Thursday.

However, this didn’t quite sink well with some social media users who questioned why she was addressing mourners, adding that she was supposed to be mourning.

Patrick Shai’s wife attacked after telling people to stop judging her late husband

Addressing the mourners, Shai’s wife had said: “I am humbled by the support and love that you have been giving us. Patrick behaved like a child and my job was to ground him. I want to say all of you judging him, you need to start judging yourself first. This pain is very deep for my kids, for my grandkids it is so deep. He carried us. We were not perfect and he was not perfect. All the challenges affect all of us, he faced all those challenges.

He was a perpetrator like all of you in this place. I was never intimidated by the beautiful women who became the wives of my husband. When he said ‘I am sorry’, he meant it. My kids are hurting because of the country that my husband loved.

The late Patrick Shai died a few days after a video of him challenging rapper, Cassper Nyovest to a boxing match went viral. In the video in question, Shai said this to Cassper, “Before I die I want to make sure that I’ve beat you so that on my tombstone they can write this is the man who beat Caster or Costa or whatever your sh*t name is … Come you son of a b***h.”

Shai was trolled by social media users and he had to apologize for his utterances.
