Leo Williams remembered a year after his death

Residents in the West Coast community of Laingville gathered in memory of 9-year-old Leo Williams on Saturday morning.

Saturday marked a year since public order police clashed with demonstrators in the St Helena Bay region and the boy was struck in the head by a stray rubber bullet while watching tv inside his uncle’s house.

Leo died at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital after more than two weeks on life support.

Residents had taken to the streets in protest against a lack of housing and service delivery.

Laingville community leader Thyrone Williams said no one had been arrested and service delivery issues also remain unresolved.

Williams said, “Some of the members say we must stand up again and fight for justice for Leo, because no one is really serious about taking this matter forward. That is the frustration at this point in the community. The guardian is very emotional for the simple reason that there is no progress in the case.”

Although Ayanda has kept her partner’s identity concealed, last year a local publication alleged she had found love with Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo.

This after sources said they spotted the couple allegedly showing public affection at the Style awards.

“The lovebirds are so madly in love and smitten with one another that they are serving us couple goals. They are very serious,” a source told the publication.

The sources said the soccer star was looking to put a ring on it, and judging by Ayanda’s recent posts, she might be ready to say “I do”.

Ayanda failed past relationships have been public over the years, from her alleged relationship with businessman Papi Rapolai to her public romance with Zulu Mkhathini and divorce from Andile Ncube.

Actress, Simz Ngema who lost her husband in 2017 shared some words of comfort with Connie. “It’s that moment that you realise, nothing else matters. Only love, family and the legacy you Leave behind matters,” she said to Connie.

Simz also told her to keep the love that they have shared in her heart and not focus on the loss. “You did it! Uncle Sho. All of it and you did it well. Take a bow king. @connie_ferguson try and remember the love and not the loss, it’s the beautiful memories that will keep you going. Things will never be the same again, you will never be the same again but you will get stronger.”

It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Mr Shona Ferguson. He passed away at noon today (Friday 30 July 2021).

More details will follow in due course.

Sho’s passing just comes a few weeks after Connie announced her brother’s passing.”Budas, I thank God that I was able to spend some time with you on Pops’ birthday. After so many years! I believe this was God’s way of giving us the opportunity to say goodbye, to build final memories together, and to celebrate life one final time together.”

“You, me, and Tony were the three musketeers growing up. So many memories that just bring a smile to my face! Your infectious laughter, how you would slap me on the shoulder when you burst out laughing! Your special signature walk swinging your arms to the back! So many memories! I love you, big bro. I will never forget you.”

At the end of her heartfelt outpour, she asked that her brother pass her love to their late mother. “I’m sorry your last moments on this earth were so painful and uncomfortable! Rest now. God has taken that pain away. You join the angels that advocate for us daily on the other side. Give my love to Moms. She’s waiting to welcome you with open arms! I love you, big bro. Now rest ANGEL,” she said.

FIVE MEN FOUND GUILTY FOR THE MURDER OF RHYTHM CITY ACTOR DUMISANI MASILELA

5 men have been found guilty for the murder of Rhythm City actor Dumisani Masilela.

The five Bongani John Masombuka, 34, of Tembisa, along with Sfundo Harrison Nkosi, 30, Khumbuzo Solomon Mukhuba, 27, Brian Makhubedu, 24, and Mashudu Malema, 31, all from Ivory Park, will appear for sentencing proceedings in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday, August 2, exactly five years to the day since the actor’s tragic shooting.

While handing down judgment, Judge Papi Mosopa said the five engaged in an orgy of criminal activities, after having hijacked another car before attempting to hijack Masilela.

“Accused 1 (Nkosi), 2 (Masombuka), 4 (Makhubedu), and 5 (Malema) made confession statements but later said to have done so under duress. Despite this, they failed to bring their own witnesses to prove that they were not behind any of the crimes committed even after they took to the stand,” said Mosopa.

He found the five guilty of Masilela’s murder, despite claims made by four of the accused that Mukhuba was the triggerman. While summarising the facts of the trial, Mosopa gave an overview of Bongani Khumalo, Masilela’s friend who was present when the shooting occurred.

“The witness said a person alighted from a vehicle that had stopped behind the deceased’s car while they were sitting in it. He said the man went to Dumi’s side of the vehicle, took out a firearm from his waist, then they heard a loud bang,” said Mosopa.

Masilela was shot in the abdomen on August 2 2017 and died in hospital a day later.

“He said the deceased then drove off and told him (Khumalo) that he was shot. They reached a certain point in Tembisa where they changed seats and he drove the deceased to Tembisa hospital before going to the police station to open a case. While at the police station, he heard that Masilela had died.”

Family, friends, and members of the public seated in the court gallery breathed a sigh of relief after Mosopa handed down the judgment. Sentencing will be handed down on Monday, while Masiilela’s mother, Sabatha Masilela is expected to testify about how her son’s death affected her.

STANDARD Bank is lending a helping hand to emerging artists who were part of the National Arts Festival fringe programme.

The bank has started the Bank of Dreams, an initiative that will raise R500 000 for the 125 productions that took part in the virtual fringe programme between 8 and 18 July.

Through the project, the bank is calling on South Africans to send messages of encouragement to artists who were part of the programme.

The Bank of Dreams has a portal where people who watched the festival could leave messages and for every message written, the bank will donate money. Sponsorship manager Dianne Graney said the target was to reach 3 700 messages.

“This is in line with the 37 years the bank has been a successful part of the National Arts Festival. As a bank that has helped the arts for a long time, we had to consider how the arts have been affected by Covid-19,” she said.

“We thought about what we could do and looked at the fringe artists. They have to raise money for themselves to take part in the festival and we know things have been hard for them.”

Dianne said 1 000 artists would benefit. The bank is working with people such as Felipe Mazibuko, David April, Holly Rey, Lesego Seoktsa and Shekhinah to raise awareness of the programme. Mazibuko, a fashion designer, said it was an honour to be part of the project. “Covid-19 has affected me directly. Like musicians, when events were stopped, I also lost some money because I had to stop working, so working on this project is close to my heart,” he said.

SA remembers Shona Ferguson's best moments – 3 iconic scenes that made SA fall in love with him

As Mzansi mourns the shocking death of Shona Ferguson, SA remembers his very best moments in front of the camera.

In recent years, the star was best known for portraying Jerry Maake on The Queen, a Ferguson Films production.

However, his career began more than a decade ago and he featured in big productions such as Muvhango, The Wild, Rockville and the Netflix drama series Kings of Joburg.

From hunky heart throb to mob boss, here are some of Shona’s best acting moments:

The Queen (2016)

Kings of Jo’Burg (2020)

The Gift (2015)

Last month, the actor opened up about some of the difficulties he faced in the early stages of his career. He said some of the people who discouraged him were fellow actors who said he did not have real talent. Some of them were later on his payroll at Ferguson Films.

“I don’t hold grudges the same way I don’t listen to anybody’s opinion about my life,” he tweeted.

Shona also recounted how he had tried his luck in Hollywood, where he was apparently asked if he had a backup plan because his acting career was not going to work out.

“17 years ago a Hollywood producer asked me if I had a backup plan. I was obviously shattered because I had just done multiple takes of an audition. He continued to say: ‘You don’t have what it takes.’

“An agent told me it wasn’t going to be easy to get me jobs because I didn’t have the right ‘look’. A veteran actor loved and respected by millions told me I am not memorable, and so did a lot of producers. Many actors criticised me and made bets I would never make it in this industry.”

The doctor said my eggs were rotten – RHOD star Nonku Williams shares her struggle to have kids

It’s still one of the topics that are seen as taboo in some families. Talking about fertility can be quite stressful and painful for some.

But more and more people are opening up about their journeys. One of them is Real Housewives of Durban star Nonku Williams (41), who recently wished her last born son, a happy fourth birthday.

She called him her miracle baby after as she gave birth to him after two failed in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures.

Before going for IVF, Nonku already had two kids, one from a previous relationship and one from her marriage. She and her ex-husband wanted to have one more child, but she learned after three years of trying to conceive that she was unable to have any more children.

“The doctor used the word rotten to describe my eggs. He told me my eggs were rotten and I would no longer be able to conceive naturally,” Nonku tells Drum.

Under pressure to conceive, Nonku decided to try in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is a series of procedures used to help with fertility and assist with the conception of a child.

“I had two IVFs that were both unsuccessful,” she says.

“I was trying for my last born. My husband and I had been trying the natural way for three years but were unsuccessful. I had two healthy children before then, conceived naturally, no complications even in my pregnancy, I carried them for the full nine months term, with no disabilities and my period was normal. But when we struggled with the last born, I was told about rotten eggs,” Nonku says.

With a three-year frustration and going back and forth to see her doctor, she was advised to try IVF.

“I was desperate to keep my marriage and very stressed. I didn’t even bother to think of going for a second opinion because I was under pressure to make the marriage work,” she says.

“Before going for IVF, you are taken through the steps where you are told you need not be stressed as this may affect the process,” Nonku says.

“But I was permanently stressed and anxious because I needed this to work. My ex-husband was putting pressure on carrying the family name and I wanted to save the marriage. But the entire process was very stressful, and I didn’t have the support that I needed,” Nonku says.

With IVF, eggs are extracted from the body and fertilised with the sperm, and then put back into the uterus.

“For the first seven days, I was given hormones to inject in my stomach every six hours, at the exact hour. A female is born with eggs, the eggs shed off every time you have your period, they then extracted nine eggs, and five survived. In the meantime, the sperm is ready. After a few days, they put them in a lab for the fertilisation process,” Nonku says.

Hoping and praying that the eggs would be successfully fertilised, she and her husband waited.

“When that is done, they put them back in the uterus and you wait for 21 days,” Nonku says.

While waiting, she could not control her stress levels.

“I was anxious and depressed from the pressure because I did not have the support I needed at the time. The process was very traumatic and stressful,” she says.

After 21 days of waiting and praying, the process was unsuccessful.

“I had my period,” she says.

“I remember, I was at the shopping mall and traumatised seeing blood run down my leg. I felt like such a failure and going back home to tell my ex-husband was the worst because I felt the pressure of having to give birth,” she says.

Without wasting any time, the next day she was back to see her gynaecologist to try again.

“The next day my ex-husband woke me up and said we needed to go try again. I did not have time to heal or process the information but was put under pressure to make sure I conceive.”

The second time also did not work out.

“I don’t know if this was caused by the amount of stress and pressure I felt. But it did out work out and I was devastated again,” she says. “The process was not cheap and the emotional burden I carried without support was too much.

“But after having given up, three months later, I fell pregnant naturally,” Nonku says.

Today Nonku has three beautiful children.

“Four years later, he is healthy, intelligent, and incredibly smart. He is always ahead of all my children and he was even the first to start walking,” Nonku says.

“But for me, I believe many factors came into play; the stressful marriage, and not going for a second opinion from a doctor might have been the reason. I don’t know but all I know is that I gave birth to a miracle baby, who I call Phendulile because he changed everything and gave me so much joy,” Nonku says.

Seasoned news anchor Cathy Mohlahlana has revealed that she has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Cathy who anchors Newzroom Afrika’s prime-time news took to social media to share the news.

“Like so many others in the country, I’ve tested positive for Covid-19. Thankfully only mild symptoms which are congestion and headache. I’m doing really well,” she captioned a picture of herself.

She further urged people to take care of themselves.

“Please take care of yourselves. I will be doing a lot of reading and watching television for the next 14 days.”

Shortly after giving an update about her health, messages from people wishing the broadcaster a speedy recovery started flooding in.

Cathy is not the only broadcaster who opened up about battling with the virus. SABC’s Chriselda Lewis, who has already recovered and is back at work, also shared she had tested positive for the deadly virus a few weeks ago.

“Late last month, I had tested positive for Covid-19. It has been a painful and scary journey towards recovery. I thank the Almighty for giving me more life. The doctors, my family, friends and colleagues who showed so much love and care,” she said.

Chriselda said although her isolation period had lapsed, she would still be taking some time off.

“While my isolation period has lapsed, I will be away for a few more days to regain strength and provide emotional and logistical support to others who are nearing the end of their isolation period,” she said.

The TV journalist, who has been away on social media since testing positive, urged everyone to be safe and take care of themselves.

“I have been away from social media for a while as the grief of families losing their loved ones has been too much to bear. May God grant them comfort. Please be safe. God bless you. See you soon,” she said.
