South African Radio Awards winners announced

The winners of the South African Radio Awards were announced on Friday, 30 July.

The awards were held virtually and were hosted by comedian Loyiso Madinga and 80 winners were celebrated across 30 categories.

The prestigious Station of the Year awards went to Jacaranda FM in the commercial radio station section while Lotus FM took it in the public broadcast service, Hot 91.9FM in the community section and Tuks FM 107.2 in the campus radio section.

According to the organisers of the awards, this is the first year Lotus FM has won the Station of the Year award, claiming five wins across various PBS categories.

Similarly, five wins across the commercial categories saw Jacaranda FM win its second station of the year award.

Tuks FM 107.2 celebrated its seventh station of the year award in the campus category, while Hot 91.9FM took home for a fifth consecutive year.

Taryn Westoby, head of Arena Events which manages the awards, congratulated the winners.

Speaking to Daily Sun, she said: “This year has been a year marked by tremendous upheaval because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and where innovation and a can-do attitude has been a prerequisite for success. It’s been incredible to see how radio has brought communities together and kept them engaged.”

The ongoing support and participation by radio stations in The Radio Awards has been overwhelming, and we congratulate all the winners and finalists who have played such an important part in keeping the nation informed and entertained with high-quality broadcasting,” she said.

According the creators of the awards, the Station of the Year winners were determined by the number of times they appeared as a finalist across all general categories of awards, for the broadcast period of 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020.

Each of the finalists submitted a further motivation which spoke to the station’s innovation, audience growth, community outreach, general achievements, as well as their “x-factor”.

This motivation was then scored by the awards’ advisory panel. This score accounted for the first half of a station’s final score, and the second half of the final score was determined by a station’s success in the other categories.

In the two listeners’ choice categories, the My Station Most Votes Award went to Pretoria FM, which received the most online votes from the listening public. Pretoria FM previously received the award in 2015.

The My Station Loyal Listeners Award went to Hot 91.9 FM for receiving the most public votes as a ratio against its RAMS figures. This is the third My Station Loyal Listeners award for Hot 91.9 FM, following wins in 2018 and 2020.

Simone Biles has pulled out of Sunday’s vault and uneven bars gymnastics finals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The four-time Olympic champion, 24, withdrew from Tuesday’s women’s team final as well as Thursday’s individual all-around final saying she had to focus on her mental health.

The American is yet to decide if she will compete in the floor (2 August) and balance beam (3 August) finals.

A US Gymnastics statement said Biles would “continue to be evaluated daily”.

It added: “After further consultation with medical staff, Simone Biles has decided to withdraw from the event finals for vault and the uneven bars.

“MyKayla Skinner, who had the fourth-highest score in vault during qualifications, will compete in vault finals for the US alongside Jade Carey, who finished with the second-highest score.

“We remain in awe of Simone, who continues to handle this situation with courage and grace, and all of the athletes who have stepped up during these unexpected circumstances.”

Biles scored her lowest Olympic vault score in the opening rotation before withdrawing from the team final.

She left the arena but returned to support her team-mates as the defending champions claimed silver behind the Russian Olympic Committee.

Team silver in Tokyo was Biles’ sixth Olympic medal and took her tally of Olympic and World Championship medals to 30.

Afterwards, Biles said: “After the performance I did, I just didn’t want to go on. I have to focus on my mental health. I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now.

“We have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out and do what the world wants us to do.

“I don’t trust myself as much anymore. Maybe it’s getting older. There were a couple of days when everybody tweets you and you feel the weight of the world.

“We’re not just athletes. We’re people at the end of the day and sometimes you just have to step back.”

In a Facebook post dedicated to Shona, Saftas wrote on Friday: “This is a huge loss to the TV & Film industry and we are so grateful for his contributions. His impact has been felt and his legacy will live on.”

The couple, who tied the knot in 2001, met by chance when Shona dropped off mutual friends of Connie’s sister at her home. Connie walked into the room, and it was love at first sight – two months later, they married.

Speaking to a local publication in 2007, Connie admitted she initially hated Shona’s tattoos, but a week after meeting him, she decided to show how much she loved him by having a dragon – a smaller version of the one on his right arm – inked into the small of her back. “I wanted him to know I saw beyond all his tattoos,” she says. “It’s a symbol of our love and togetherness.”

Shona, in turn, had Connie’s name written in a rose on his arm. “This way, she can’t complain that she never gets flowers from me!” he said.

Appearing on countless magazine covers and TV shows, the golden couple often spoke of their instant connection and falling in love at “first sight.”

Shona and Connie celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in December. In an Instagram post dedicated to his wife, Shona wrote: “…the fact that 19 years later you still manage to make me laugh is everything I’ve prayed for and more! I love you more each day.”

Shona and Connie not only inspired the country with their success in business but also with the love and respect they showed each other through the years.

Health Dept: Men over the age of 50 not coming out in numbers for COVID jab

The government is urging more who are 60 years and older to come forward for a covid COVID-19 vaccination.

Officials have set a target to administer a minimum of 290,000 vaccinations per day in the coming week.

Health Department Deputy-Director General, Nicholas Crisp said the target ultimately is to vaccinate more than 300,000 people daily.

“We are not managing to reach that many men, specifically over the age of 50, the men are not turning out in their numbers for vaccination. We would really like to encourage men to come forward for vaccination.”

Crisp said they were working on a programme that would see undocumented residents receiving a vaccine.

“To the record of that individual back to the individual in case something should go wrong or if you need a record of the vaccination and to account for the vaccines – and without some kind of identity that is obviously a challenge.”

Speaking to the Podcast and Chill podcasters Loyiso said, “Scandal? no. I am serious. I am not on Scandal…there was no way I was gonna from one long form show to another. That’s not me.

When asked what made him leave, Loyiso said, “It was time…honestly from my side, there was no negativity, there was no bad feelings. It was literally just me going, you know what as an actor, i am ready to move on to push myself a little but more. Five years on one show is a long time and I think for me it was just about being honest with myself and saying, look Loy its time to move on”

The speculations started when Loyiso informed his fans that he is working on a new project which he’ll be announcing soon.

Loyiso also uploaded a picture on Instagram where he credited e.tv Scandal! actress Sive Mabuye which had us thinking that the heartthrob could be joining the e.tv telenovela.

Following his surprise exit from The Queen Mzansi, Loyiso announced that he was returning to the theatre. Through a social media post, Macdonald said that he would be hitting the market theatre in celebration of their 45th anniversary.

The actor was in Dusk – a production written by Mark Scheepers and directed by Palesa Mazamisa. It premiered in July.

Kagiso is now back on the Queen and we are not sure whether this is just a stint and he will leave or he is back for good but judging from what he said, he will definitely not be leaving The Queen for another soapie. This could mean that we will see him on movies and theatrical plays which we are excited about.

During his interview with Mac G back in 2020, the actor – who has great passion and respect for the art of acting shared his thoughts on actors being cast based on the number of followers they have.

“In the time that I have been working on TV, the whole social media game has changed a lot of things. Where I still remember the first time I was asked how many social media followers I had at an audition. It threw me off because it has got nothing to do with acting.” He shared. “This frustrates the audience you already have because they want to see the best. We want to see people who make us engaged with what it is that they are doing onscreen. Hence that’s an actor’s job.”

DRAMA: Robert Marawa speaks out after he was allegedly fired via SMS

As has been his character when his relationship has turned sour with the SABC‚ outspoken sports presenter Robert Marawa has not gone quietly after a second sacking from the public broadcaster in four years.

The news of Marawa’s “departure” was broken in a statement by the SABC on Friday that the hugely popular host of Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW) would part ways with the public broadcaster. Later on Friday Marawa did not hesitate to share a screenshot of the “SMS” he said was the mode of communication that fired him.

In another dramatic turn‚ Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW) won the category for Best Sports Show: Commercial at the SA Radio Awards on Friday‚ on the same day Marawa was fired.

Marawa tweeted on Thursday that he was fired by SMS. His tweet was accompanied by an alleged screenshot of an SMS or WhatsApp message he received from a person identified as “Kina”‚ who apparently is Kina Nhlengethwa‚ whose LinkedIn profile states she is acting station manager at SAfm Radio.

Marawa tweeted: “So after serving the public broadcaster through time‚ I am sent yet another text from a person in an ‘acting’ position informing me of this.

“Same modus operandi as SS [pay-channel SuperSport].

“What do they fear about the last Show??

“Thank you Mzansi for the love & support thru the years. #MSW.”

The alleged screenshot of the SMS or WhatsApp message by Nhlengethwa states: “Hi Robert. The reason for my call earlier on was to firstly inform you about the press release that was going to go out earlier on.

“The second one was to inform you that you need not come in for the show today as there will be no MSW broadcast show tonight. Thank you.”

The SABC had announced Marawa’s departure‚ along with that of Morning Live TV sports presenter Vaylen Kirtley‚ in a statement on Friday.

The statement read: “The SABC would like to announce the departure of renowned sports broadcasters Mr Robert Marawa and Ms Vaylen Kirtley.

“Robert Marawa departs following the conclusion of the MSW (Marawa Sport Worldwide)‚ which Marawa presented on both METRO FM and Radio 2000 simultaneously.”

Marawa has had a chequered relationship with the SABC. He was fired from Metro FM in 2017 when he refused to return to his show in solidarity with his producer Beverly Maphangwa‚ who had been fired earlier. Marawa was reinstated by popular demand and tremendous public pressure.

Marawa was controversially fired by SuperSport as a TV sports anchor in 2019.

The SABC’s head of sport‚ Gary Rathbone‚ could not immediately be reached for comment.

UK urges pregnant women to get vaccinated given COVID-19 variant risks

British health authorities have urged more pregnant women to get coronavirus jabs after a national study found the Delta variant appeared to increase their risk of severe symptoms.

England’s top midwife on Friday urged pregnant women to get the jab as new data showed an increase in severe illness among pregnant women hospitalized with virus symptoms.

Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent, chief midwifery officer for England, wrote to GPs and midwives urging them to encourage expectant mothers to get a jab.

She said she was calling on pregnant women to “protect themselves and their babies”.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the Royal College of Midwives have also recommended vaccination of pregnant women.

Public Health England has said it recommends pregnant women get Moderna and Pfizer vaccines because they have been given to over 130,000 pregnant women in the United States.

A paper based on national data compiled by the UK Obstetric Surveillance System, published online on July 25, found that the proportion of pregnant women admitted to hospital with moderate to severe infection rose “significantly” after the Delta variant became dominant in May.

The paper by University of Oxford researchers found that pregnant women hospitalized during the Delta wave were more likely to get pneumonia, with a third requiring respiratory support.

“It is very concerning that admissions of pregnant women to the hospital with Covid-19 are increasing and that pregnant women appear to be more severely affected by the Delta variant of the disease,” said the study’s chief investigator Marian Knight, professor of maternal and child population health at the University of Oxford.

None of more than 3,000 pregnant women admitted to hospital with virus symptoms since February was fully vaccinated, the study said.

The study did not look at pregnant women with mild infections who were treated outside the hospital.

The UK has recommended vaccination of pregnant women since April but takeup has been very low compared to the general population, the paper said, blaming misinformation fuelled by changing advice early in the vaccine rollout.

“The findings of this study strongly highlight the urgent need for an international approach to tackle this misinformation and improve uptake of the vaccine during pregnancy,” it said.

A survey by the RCOG in May found that 58 percent of pregnant women offered the vaccine had declined it, with most saying they feared harming the baby or were waiting for more information on safety.

Actress Naomi Campbell Pens Letter To Former President Jacob Zuma

International supermodel and actress Naomi Campbell left South Africans divided with her lengthy letter to the former president Jacob Zuma.

In the letter, the actress speaks about the unrests that took place in the past few weeks in South Africa.

Campbell said this is not South Africa that she knows, she said she has realized how the former president has avoided appearing before the Zondo Commission.

Her letter read: “Dear Former President Jacob Zuma, This isn’t the South Africa I remember and that millions of South African’s fought for. The South Africa that overcame Apartheid, showed the world that change was possible. Led the battle in the fight against HIV/AIDS and has weathered countless efforts to undermine the new South Africa.

“I have watched how over the last few years you have protested your innocence at the allegations tabled against you of corruption and allowing mass State Capture. I have seen you got out of your way to avoid having to deal with these matters in court and avoid a commission set up to investigate State Capture. You have talked of the rule of law and the South African constitution being something that should apply to everyone. Yet you defied the courts and were sentenced to 15 months in prison.”

She continued to speak about how the actions of the former president have affected the country. She said he must appear before the Zondo Commission and take responsibility.

Now upon your incarceration, a group of protests under the #Freezuma banner broke out igniting the worst violence and criminality South Africa has seen since the end of apartheid. These actions not only saw hundreds lose their lives and property be destroyed. But its effects will now be felt by many millions more. This affects the millions of hard-working and peaceful South Africans many whom have suffered over the last year because of Covid.

“Each day you defy the courts and stoke division you take a step backward from Madiba’s vision for South Africa to prosper and for their not only be equitable political justice but also economic justice. If you still consider yourself a leader then please act and take responsibility like one. Agree to finish your appearance in front of the State Capture commission and equally you will have your days in court to contest the corruption charges alleged against you. . . Put the Nation first PEACE IN SOUTHAFRICA ❤️????#NAOMIAFRICA.”

South Africans have since reacted to the letter, Here are few reactions from Twitter.
