Zweli Mkhize’s son Dedani accuses SIU of lying about Digital Vibes saga

Embattled Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s son, Dedani, has hit back at the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) over its findings that he and his family benefitted from the unlawfully awarded Digital Vibes contract worth R150 million.

This week, the Business Day reported that the SIU had accused Mkhize of unlawful and improper conduct and wanted his family to repay R4 million which was allegedly channelled to them as part of the proceeds of the tender issued by the Health Department.

Mkhize was placed on special leave after the scandal broke, despite his denial of any wrongdoing.

Dedani Mkhize has denied ever receiving R3.8 million as he counter-accused the SIU of lying about the case.

He said he made submissions to the SIU to this effect and was willing to cooperate with the unit.

However, he complained in a statement that while the SIU acknowledged receipt of his attorney’s correspondence and affidavit, they did not contact him over the matter.

In court papers filed in the Special Tribunal this week, the SIU requested the entity to review and set aside the contract and for those implicated to be ordered to pay the SIU or the Department of Health the money they received with interest.

In the documents, the SIU said minister Mkhize put pressure on the department’s Director-General Malebona Matsoso to issue a contract to Digital Vibes that is owned by his former personal assistant and secretary.

Dedani added that he was shocked by the findings.

The secret is out – sensational musician Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana and her partner are not only expecting a baby, but are also engaged.

The private couple, who have been dating for less than a year, are said to be over the moon with the news of their new addition and had decided to keep it a secret. Not anymore.

Zahara is in a relationship with Johannesburg-based doctor Mnyamezeli Japhta. This will be their first child together.

Sources close to the Loliwe hitmaker have confirmed that the new mother-to-be was in the early stages of her pregnancy and had wanted to keep it to herself.

“She is excited and scared because this will be her first child and it came as they were still enjoying the honeymoon stage of their relationship,” the source said.

Another source said they were hoping for a healthy baby as this comes as the multi-award-winning star was in the middle of a tax-related court case currently sitting at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

“The pregnancy is still in the early stages, but we are excited for them. Bulelwa deserves all the happiness because she has been through a lot in relationships,” the source added.

It is understood that Japhta made his intentions clear to Mkutukana as she is sporting a diamond ring on her finger.

When approached for comment, the coy star would not reveal any details of her love life and referred questions to her beau.

“Oh no, why don’t you call him to hear what he has to say? I don’t want to say anything,” she said.

Japhta was not available for comment.

She made her relationship with Japhta public in December. “He is too sweet. He shows up randomly even when she is at work with flowers and chocolates. She is glowing. We can’t deny how good he is to her plus, with her weight loss, she oozes confidence,” the source said.

Following a failed relationship with her long-term boyfriend – Umhlobo Wenene DJ Amaza Ntshanga, Zahara did not give up on love, She went on to date a pastor and was ready to settle down.

“Well, yes. I might get married soon. Maybe before the end of the year. But I can’t reveal who it is.”

Asked if she was really abstaining from s.e.x until after the wedding, she said: “I haven’t had s.e.x since I broke up with my ex. S.e.x is the last thing on my mind. I think, yes, I’m now saving myself for marriage.”

The singer called off their wedding saying their connection had faded.

Zahara said her life was too busy for s.e.x anyway.

“You fought your fight dad, and I’m so proud of you for making it this far,” Alicia, who matriculated in 2020, added.

“You’ve left a legacy behind that I will carry on, as I did make this promise to you when I was little. Thank you for everything that you’ve done for me my doppelgänger. You made a promise to me that you’ll always be there when I need you, so I believe you will always be there even in spirit.”

“I’m going to miss a lot of things, but most importantly, your hugs,” she said in her heartfelt tribute to her dad. “I know you are protecting us from up there in heaven. I miss you and words can’t express how much I love you Fa. Rest in peace my twin.”

Bheki Cele calls for arrest of triggerman who killed Constable Molefi during Brakpan bust

Police Minister Bheki Cele has said the triggerman who shot and killed a Gauteng highway patrol constable must be found “dead or alive”.

Cele was speaking at the funeral service of Molwantwa Molefi in Sebokeng in the Vaal.

Molefi was killed in a crossfire with a group of heavily armed suspected criminals.

Some have been arrested and rifles including AK-47’s and R5’s were seized.

Minister Cele wants the men and women in blue to find the killers of their fellow officer.

“To me, that is my crown, that is my prize. It’s the thug that pulled the trigger that killed this man”, said Cele.

He described Molefi as a dedicated and disciplined officer whose life was cut short.

Cele had strong words for members of the public who harbour criminals.

“The community, before they blame the police and before they insult the police, they should understand how much police contribute; even paying the ultimate price like this one.”

The minister announced that a breakthrough has been made with the arrest of 19 suspects who were linked to the foiled cash heist which led to the shootout.

Constable Molefi leaves behind four daughters.

Chinese billionaire Sun Dawu sentenced to 18 years in prison

Billionaire Sun Dawu, a vocal critic of the Chinese government, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for “picking quarrels and provoking troubles,” according to an official statement posted by the court.

Sun was arrested in March this year. His company, Hebei Dawu Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Group, owns farming operations in China and employs about 9,000 people in poultry processing, pet food production and other industries. He is also famous for being an outspoken critic of China’s ruling Communist Party.

Sun was found guilty of “gathering a crowd to storm state institutions, obstructing public service, picking quarrels and provoking troubles, disrupting production and operation, conducting coercive trade, illegal mining, illegal occupation of agricultural land, illegal absorption of public deposits,” the People’s Court of Gaobeidian said in a statement posted on its official WeChat account.

As part of his 18-year sentence, Dawu was also fined 3.11 million yuan ($480,000).

Sun was one of the very few people in China to publicly accuse the government of attempting to cover up the extent of the African swine flu outbreak in 2019, which eventually killed more than 100 million pigs in the country. In an interview with CNN in May 2019, Sun said local officials had only retested his pigs for the disease when he had started to post pictures of the dead animals online.

There have also been reports in local media that Sun was embroiled in a land dispute with a local government-owned farm, according to Reuters. The news organization reported Dawu claimed dozens of the company’s employees were injured in a fight with police in 2020 after attempts to stop state farm staff from tearing down one of its buildings.

In a statement on July 14, advocacy group Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) said Sun was being put on trial “as a blatant attempt to punish Sun for his support of human rights.”

“Sun Dawu has made extraordinary contributions to improving the life of Chinese citizens living in rural China. His support of rights defenders was an extension of his concern for the welfare of people on the margins of the Chinese economy,” said Ramona Li, senior researcher and advocate for CHRD, in a statement at the time. CHRD added Sun was arrested along with his wife and adult children.

Sun’s sentencing comes amid a growing crackdown on private enterprises in China, as Beijing attempts to pull into line the country’s free-wheeling entrepreneurs. In a set of guidelines put out in September 2020, the Communist Party said the private sector needed “politically sensible people” who would “firmly listen to the party.”

Chinese billionaire Ren Zhiqiang was imprisoned for 18 years in September 2020 on corruption-related offences. Nicknamed “the Cannon” for his outspoken views, Ren had been a vocal critic of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s coronavirus prevention strategy.

In an essay published in March 2020, which was widely attributed to Ren, the author referred to Xi obliquely as a power-hungry “clown.”

Media personality and former Miss South Africa Liesl Laurie has revealed she has also tested positive for the coronavirus.

This follows days after her husband, Dr. Musa Mthombeni revealed he had contracted the virus.

“For about 18 months, my medical doctor has managed to stay clear of the dreaded Covid-19 virus but a couple of days ago we tested positive,” she said.

“What a crazy, hectic experience but as you can understand I am well taken care of. Today is a good day and with each day of this roller-coaster ride that passes, I feel more and more like myself.”The Jacaranda FM presenter thanked everyone who had kept them in their prayers as they battled the deadly disease.

“We are on the mend and would like to thank all our friends and family for the prayers. We are slowly but surely healing day by day. Keep safe out there,” she said.

Dr Musa was one of the many people who first received the jab when the vaccine reached our shores, but according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, you can still contract the coronavirus after getting the vaccine.

“Individuals may still be at risk of contracting Covid-19, although the disease will likely be milder in comparison to those who are unvaccinated. More evidence is required to confirm whether Covid-19 vaccines provide protection against asymptomatic or mild disease. Presently, it remains unclear whether vaccinated individuals can still spread the disease to others, therefore caution is still required.”

Drone attack on tanker escalates Iran-Israel maritime tensions

Maritime tensions are escalating in the Middle East following the deadly attack on a tanker connected to an Israeli billionaire in the Arabian Sea.

Two crewmembers, a Briton and a Romanian died on Thursday when the Mercer Street tanker was attacked by an armed drone believed to be operated by Iran off the coast of Oman.

While Israel and the US are blaming Iran for the attack, Iranian state media has said the incident was in retaliation for an airstrike on a military airport in Syria that it accused Israel of being behind.

The Syrian regime is backed by Iranian forces. No Iranian official has commented on the attack and CNN has reached out to Iran’s foreign ministry for comment.

The vessel was travelling from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates with no cargo on board, the ship’s management firm said.

It is reportedly sailing under a Liberian flag, according to the maritime tracking website Marine Traffic. The ship is Japanese-owned and managed by Zodiac Maritime, an international management company headquartered in London and led by Israeli shipping magnate Eyal Ofer.

Zodiac also confirmed Friday that the tanker was under its own power and moving to a safe location with a US naval
A security official with knowledge of the preliminary investigation said the crew reported hearing drone noises followed by explosions, and eruptions in the water. The boat then went radio silent.

The boat’s driver and a security detail then remained on the bridge to pilot the vessel, and were hit in the attack, they added. The dead Briton was a member of the security personnel, the official said.
A US defence official familiar with the details of the incident said Friday that the tanker was attacked by an armed drone thought to be operated by Iran.

Another official said the US responded “to an emergency distress call of an apparent UAV style attack,” and that the ship was escorted to port by the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier and the USS Mitscher destroyer.
The tanker’s crew reported that the drone exploded into its superstructure on Thursday, the first US official said. They also reported an unsuccessfully attempted drone attack earlier in the day but said that drone fell into the water.

The US military has long noted Iran has drones that operate by flying into targets and exploding on impact.
An official source at Oman’s Maritime Security Center told Oman News Agency on Friday that the incident happened outside Omani waters, the agency said.

Oman sent jets and a Navy ship to the location of the attack, and Omani officials say they were told by the ship and its crew it would continue sailing without the need for assistance, the agency reported.
Deep concerns

This incident comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and follows a series of attacks on tankers in the Gulf of Oman in recent years, which the US has blamed on Iran.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said that the world needs to stand up to Iran after the incident.
“Iran isn’t only an Israeli problem but an exporter of terror, destruction and instability which harms the entire world. We must never remain silent in the face of Iranian terrorism, which also harms freedom of navigation,”
Lapid said in a statement on Twitter.

Lapid added that he had told his British counterpart, Dominic Raab, that the attack on the ship needed a strong response.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was “deeply concerned” by the incident off the coast of Oman, in a statement on Twitter.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the British and Romanian nationals killed in the incident,” the statement said. “Vessels must be allowed to navigate freely in accordance with international law,” it added.

Ambrey, the maritime security company that employed the UK crewman killed in the attack, also said in a statement that it was “currently working closely with our client and the relevant authorities, whilst offering all the support possible to the victim’s next of kin.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved at this incredibly sad time.”
