Popular Mzansi singer Lady Zamar is featured on the first episode of Showmax Original series, Unfollowed, as she unpacks her experience of cancel culture and the rape allegation against a fellow musician.

In 2018, the singer-songwriter, real name Yamikani Janet Banda used her social platform to confront a fellow musician for allegedly sexually assaulting her back in 2017. He maintains his innocence and The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined to prosecute, citing insufficient evidence.

In Unfollowed, news anchor and journalist Thembekile Mrototo, the Love Is Blind hitmaker peaks to how she wound up in a long-term relationship that she claims began in rape, and why it took her so long to accept what had happened to her and speak out.

“I come from a very religious background, and I was taught not to be alone with men. The very first day, I felt like it was my fault. And so I felt like I had no leg to stand on… I struggled to walk away from it because I constantly blamed myself,” she tells Mrototo.

She adds that because of her background, she has always known love to come from a place of fear because that is how her father was.

“It was very abusive. And so it was so easy for me to be like, ‘Okay, so I guess this is what I’ve been looking for my entire life’. But I knew deep down that it wasn’t. It was a constant violation because I felt obligated.”

Lady Zamar says that it took a friend directly telling her that what she’d been through was rape, for her to start freeing herself.

“Because I always felt like it was my fault, I never put the words ‘sexual assault’ to it,” she says.

When Lady Zamar opened up on social media, she had a sense of what was to come. The Charlotte singer said that her team warned her that people will not believe her because of the time.

“But this was not about whether people believe me or not. It was a matter of my safety… I knew that as long as I kept his secret, I would be at his mercy.”

The singer has been a victim of online backlash and it has not stopped.

“It was shocking, really, how my narrative, and my story, and my reality became a focal point of entertainment,” Lady Zamar says.

“It was horrific, to just be in a constant state of being reminded of this thing all the time.”

In Unfollowed, Lady Zamar also addresses issues like finding herself cast in the role of the other woman.

She also talks about why she pulled out of the sexual assault court case, and the impact that CPTSD (compound post-traumatic stress disorder), depression, and being unfollowed have had on her life and career.

According to various blogs, the singer is making a move to Malawi. The reports alleged that she would be moving to the southeastern African country because her father is from there. However, Lady Zamar was originally born in Tembisa, South Africa. Her father is from Zambia, not Malawi, according to her interview with TshisaLIVE in 2017.

The false reports come a week after she went on a social media rant to address the constant cyberbullying she faces.

“Do you want me to kill myself, do you want me to die, be murdered, go to jail to make you guys happy… do you guys want me to stop making music or publicly cry so you can see how I actually feel about what happened to me?” she partly wrote in a lengthy tweet.

Lady Zamar is often a victim of mob intimidation and cyberbullying on Twitter whenever she posts her views. The treatment she receives stems from the rape allegations she levelled against her ex-boyfriend and musician Sjava in 2017.

In 2018, Lady Zamar opened a rape case against Sjava – who denied the rape allegations and filed an application for the matter to be heard in the high court.

“As a final statement on this matter, I write to you as my colleagues, business partners, peers, and supporters to inform you that I will not be engaging on matters of assault and abuse levelled against me on social media or any other platform.

“that’s insane … what a twisted web of lies this has become… none of these things here are facts… just stop.”

The controversial Zimbabwean socialite penned a lengthy text explaining his understanding and view.

He spoke at large of how much he felt that Lady Zamar was only playing the victim when she was the manipulator.

“Lady Zamar isn’t a victim of any kind, rather an architect of her own misery, infact she’s a manipulator. Pulling out the mental health excuse, trying to guilt shame people holding her accountable for laying false charges on an innocent man (Sjava) What about Sjava’s mental health? Her false allegations are going to have a lasting impact on this man – he’s always going to be an abuser in the eyes of many even proven innocent.” he said.

“He’s going to be stigmatized by brands, this will affect his income. He’s going to be stigmatized in society, this will strain his relationships Had she been successful in her agenda, she would not only have destroyed his reputation but stole a part of his lifetime, as he would be imprisoned Did she ever think of the harm she was doing to an innocent man for whatever petty reason she did it? Learn OR perish!!!” Shadaya finished.

Many fans also came on as they asked her to tell the truth and they had a lot of words for her, and so was Shadaya who said.

“Tell the truth then, which the courts didn’t deem truth enough to convict Sjava”

After they exchanged words, fans also added their perceptions saying.

“Ma’am please ignore this people they are not worth listen to or responding them please we love ❤️ you”

“Your story doesn’t really add up. So people can only see your bad side. I think in many rape cases the evidence is hard to come by especially when you are in a relationship with the person. Personally I think you are a lier and a scorned woman.”

“Eish, idk man… This seems too much hey. I hope you and him be okay in the end without neither of causing either of you pain and suffering in the long run. Rape is a serious thing, especially in . Your recent tweet was really heartbreaking, esp. with the fact that you’re♀️”

South African singer Lady Zamar may have disabled her comments on social media but she hasn’t heard the last from Sjava’s fans. Following Sjava’s trending for a couple of days after the release of his latest album, Sjave’s fans have been breathing fire down Lady Zamar’s neck.

Lady Zamar has been called all the names in the book but her disabling comments on Twitter may have given her some sort of peace of mind. But it appears even disabling comments, Lady Zamar can not seem to dodge the bullets from her ex-boyfriend’s fans, Sjava.

Lady Zamar is still being labeled a pathological liar who allegedly lied about rape after she allegedly could not get Sjava to dump his wife for her.

“South Africa we need to fix a very serious matter for both parties to move on peoples talents and careers are at stake @MacGUnleashed We need a podcast to clear both #Sjava and #LadyZamar we as fans are taking this personal! THEY STARTED IT THEY NEED TO END IT!” wrote Linda Khoza
