Some members of the Zulu royal family have snubbed an invite by King Misuzulu kaZwelithini to meet over the ongoing succession feud.

It is understood Prince Mbonisi and Princess Thembi did not attend Wednesday’s meeting in uLundi, saying they could not be summoned by someone who referred to himself as a King when the nation did not yet have one.

The siblings of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini have questioned the legitimacy of their nephew as the rightful successor.

All major houses of the Zulu royal family met with the hopes of reaching an amicable solution to succession divisions that have rocked the nation.

King Misuzulu has called on other members of the royal house to be patient with those who opposed his ascendancy.

“The division of the Royal family means the division of the Zulu nation. We find ourselves having two sides, which is unfortunate; there is no person who can say he’s more important than others as we all need one another. Right from King Misuzulu himself, he needs us as other houses to embrace him, so he is a king before you see him as a king,” said spokesperson for the royal family, Prince Thulani Zulu.

AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is expected to meet with all major houses of the Zulu royal family in Ulundi on Wednesday in a bid to restore unity.

Amid the raging feud within the Zulu royal court, the king of the Zulu nation has called a mass meeting of royals who have been embroiled in a bitter kingship dispute since King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuZulu’s passing in March.

Some royals have questioned the legitimacy of King Misuzulu as the rightful heir, with different names being bandied about on who should ascend the throne.

The family has assured those who were not invited, that their interests would be fully represented while another faction who does not recognize Misuzulu kaZwelithini as king has cautioned family members about attending the meeting.

Spokesperson for the royal family, Prince Thulani Zulu said: “I trust that these houses that are here faithfully in their negotiations because we are here to listen to the truth because the truth will conquer. Our coming here is that we must take the truth and put it on the table and everyone must see ‘this is the truth’. We know some people deny the truth and that is human nature, but the truth is there.”

Letter from factions opposing him have been instructing King Misuzulu to step down.

But in the meantime, the king and his wife Queen Ntokozo Mayisela-Zulu have made their first public appearance.

On Sunday, 25 July they launched their first community support programme at KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in Nongoma, KZN.

They donated food parcels to poor residents of Nongoma who suffered lockdown and the looting in KZN.

Misuzulu said it was a pleasure to be there with his wife and business people to help. “It is difficult to watch during these difficult times. I remember my father used to warn people they should not burn when they protest because they are burning their own facilities,” he said.

He warned people that looting and burning of buildings would make the poor suffer more. “I thank those who stood up and protected their facilities and malls like Ulundi, Pongola, Vryheid and many others.”

He said he wished to intervene in what was happening in Phoenix where people were trying to protect their businesses and houses but ended up doing crime and killing people.

“What is happening in Phoenix is brutal and I wish the police would arrest the perpetrators without bias.”

It hurt him that in his home town of Nongoma over 100 stores were burned to ashes. “It is sorrowful to see people of Nongoma in long lines to buy food knowing it was burned and looted by our own people.”

Queen Ntokozo said she started the Kamaskolo Foundation two weeks ago after the king told her he wanted to end the nation’s hunger. “We have donated 2 500 food parcels and each parcel cost R1 200. We are working in partnership with Meals on Wheels and Shoprite,” she said. “It hurts that we will not satisfy all the people, but it is not over.

“Everyone is welcome to donate.”

Esta Mthiyane (70) told Daily Sun the food parcels would help her as she depended on a pension grant and couldn’t stand in long lines. “I was asking myself how I was going to survive, but God answered my prayers.”

Newly-appointed King Misuzulu is a big fan of Big Zulu.

The news was announced by Big Zulu over the weekend. The Imali Eningi hitmaker was a guest at the royal house where the Zulu king apparently told him he liked and supported his music.

Big Zulu expressed his excitement on Facebook and Instagram, where he wrote: “Bayede wena we Ndlovu, Ndabezitha. We’re your subjects. It was a huge blessing to be with you.

“Yesterday I had an honour of visiting the honourable King Misuzulu. He told me how much he loved and supported my music.

“He likes the way I represent the nation. Let me also take this opportunity and thank a dear friend of mine, Duduzani, for everything he’s done for me.

“He took his time and fetched me from the airport to the king. Thank you, my brother.”

The caption was accompanied by a photo of himself standing with Misuzulu and Duduzani Zuma.

His fan Mathonsi Welcome Bonginkosi commented: “Big Zulu, you’re the most humble artist I’ve ever seen in this country.

“You respect humanity. You don’t look at skin colour or tribe.

“You always show love to your fans and everyone you come across regardless of their status.”

King MisuZulu's First Interview Gets Good Reception

It has only been just over a month since King MisuZulu ka Zwelithini’s reign, after succeeding his late mother, queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, who passed away in April. Her untimely passing came as the nation was still mourning the passing of the AmaZulu king, His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu who passed away in March.

With the new AmaZulu king installed and on the throne, many of us had not heard him speak, and to be honest, we were very curious.

On Wednesday afternoon the king had his first public tell-all interview with eNCA and Newzroom Afrika, and Twitter was buzzing with comments about his eloquence and accent. It is no secret that he obviously went to private schools and got a good education, but a lot of people could still not marry a “private school accent” or an American accent to the AmaZulu king.

What stood out for many people was that he is humble and respectful, even in the way he addressed Newzroom Afrika reporter, Ziyanda Ngcobo, or how he spoke to eNCA’s Siphamandla Goge.

Ladies have been curious about who the new AmaZulu queen will be, and whether or not the reigning monarch will take many wives, as some women have been eyeing him.

When asked the question about the new queen and family plans, the king confirmed that he will marry Ntokozo Mayisela. Mayisela is reportedly he mother of his two sons, and the king has explained that lobolo has been paid.

He added that the Zulu royal family is still in mourning and therefore the wedding would have to be put on hold, also explaining that COVID-19 protocols would also have to be considered when planning the big day.

“Right now not much can be done. You know a wedding becomes a huge celebration. We therefore need to consider a lot of things including the government’s Covid-19 protocols,” the king said

On the topic of polygamy, the king did not rule out the possibility of taking another wife.

“I don’t want to shy away from the Zulu culture, from my family culture. For now I am happy with the one I have but expect anything,” he explained.

The new monarch also spoke about his new role and his plans to continue the work that his late father had started.

“What my father left as a foundation for us to carry on, I have to build on that, not to eliminate and say we are starting a new thing, new beginnings. I think my father, the king, had already started on a good note, he laid the foundation for myself and for the nation,” he explained.

It is public knowledge that his coronation has been contested within the Zulu royal family. Princesses Ntandoyenkosi and Ntombizosuthu filed papers to challenge the validity of late king Goodwill Zwelithini’s will which appointed late queen Matfombi Dlamini Zulu as regent. The princesses believe that the signatures on the will are fraudulent.

“I believe through my family that we will come back together to be one. I don’t have anyone in my family that I say I dislike, for any reason. I do believe in my family. I am here, part of my family and I will bring them together,” the King said.

These were some of the reactions on Twitter.
