The son of former South Africa president Jacob Zuma, Duduzane Zuma, recently spoke about having cities that are similar to Dubai right here in South Africa. It appears the young man is taking this dream seriously and was recently spotted in Dubai driving a red Ferrari and supposedly doing some research on how to turn South African cities into Dubai-like powerhouses.

His video set a lot of tongues wagging as many of his fans expressed excitement about his dreams of becoming the country’s next president.

Duduzane Zuma absolutely loves Dubai and his many trips there can prove it.

The 39-year-old recently celebrated his birthday along with his twin sister Duduzile who is just as controversial as their father Jacob Zuma.

Despite all the controversy around the Zuma family, Duduzane is quite popular on social media and has gained a surprising amount of supporters who would love to have him as the country’s next president.

Fans recently went gaga again after one of his entourage, Winston Innes, shared a clip of “the people’s president” taking a Ferrari for a spin in his favourite city – Dubai.

“Always working,” the clip was captioned. While it is unclear exactly what he is working on in the clip, the young Zuma was, as usual, showered with praise.

Here are some of the things his fans have had to say about the clip:

@blackeyworldwide said: “Vote Duduzane Zuma for president… this is the future we’ve ALL been waiting for.”

@nomsanhlabathi said: “Craving a second residence in Dubai so this man can let his personality run wild in peace. or a wild set of accountants and lawyers.”

RET forces want Duduzane Zuma to lead eThekwini region – report

Some members aligned to the African National Congress’ (ANC’s) radical economic transformation (RET) faction are considering encouraging Duduzane Zuma to be a candidate for chair in the eThekwini region.

The RET forces feel that the position of former president Jacob Zuma’s son has been strengthened after he was elected chair of an ANC branch in Durban this week.

Zuma was on Thursday elected as the ANC branch chairperson of ward 11, Newlands East, Durban.

Now, according to the Sunday Times, supporters of former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede want Zuma to take her previous position.

Gumede was forced to step aside in May after being charged with corruption.

The Sunday Times adds that the RET faction now wants Gumede to stand for a senior position on the ANC provincial executive.

“Duduzane being elected in his branch gives him legitimacy. It puts him in a better position, of him being the region chair candidate as opposed to Gumede, who still has legal battles and frankly has outgrown regional politics,” said an insider in the RET faction.

However, in order to be elected to the regional executive committee, Zuma would need to have been an ANC member for five years and spent two years on a branch executive. To be elected to the ANC national executive committee, Zuma needs to have been a member for at least 10 years. It is not known when Zuma joined the ANC.

ANC eThekwini branch spokesperson Ntando Khuzwayo confirmed that Zuma was elected as the ANC branch chairperson this week.

“[Duduzane Zuma] was there himself since the morning collecting people from homes to the hall, he was an integral part of the co-ordinating and making sure people attended the meeting. It was a very well attended meeting and once quorum was reached, he was elected chairperson,” said Khuzwayo.

Running for office
For years, rumours have swirled that Zuma is preparing to run for president of the ANC.

The former president’s son seemed to confirm this in an interview with radio station Power 98.7 earlier in December.

Zuma said the ANC needs “fresh and younger perspectives”.

“I feel like I have something to offer,” he added.

Zuma said his political ambitions were based on wanting to help South Africa move forward.

“I don’t want to be that guy that has an opportunity to make a difference and doesn’t take it,” he said.

Duduzane Zuma, the son of former president Jacob Zuma, was on Thursday night elected as the ANC branch chairperson of ward 11, Newlands East, Durban.

Zuma was elected during an ANC branch biennial general meeting in Newlands East.

The Witness newspaper reported that this was confirmed by ANC eThekwini branch spokesperson Ntando Khuzwayo.

“[Duduzane Zuma] was there himself since the morning collecting people from homes to the hall, he was an integral part of the co-ordinating and making sure people attended the meeting. It was a very well attended meeting and once quorum was reached, he was elected chairperson,” said Khuzwayo.

“Everyone can sit back and criticise … but unless you’re trying to be part of the solution it doesn’t count.”

Zuma said he wanted to rejuvenate the ANC.

“We are living in the 21st century, we can’t be deploying tactics that were deployed in 1976 or 1994.”

“We cannot have the same players on the field trying to make plans for people that think differently in this day and age.”

Radio host and media personality Unathi Nkayi wrote: “For sake HOW DOES ONE LOOT RESPONSIBLY. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is he talking.”

In a follow-up post, she wrote: “And yet, looting is a crime. You will insult me until you stop. You will continue showing us who you are. I know that people call me names when they can force me to do what they want or can’t get what they want from me. Looting is a crime.”

Actress Bubu Mazibuko commented: “What a complete knob.”

Musician Tamara Dey commented: “What the FK”

DJ Zinhle responded with broken hearts emojis.

But DJ Chynaman defended Duduzane and said: “This is not a full video.”

But Unathi was having none of it as she said: “Long short, edited or not he says loot responsibly. Don’t do that to me please.”
But on Monday 19 July, Duduzane denied that he was inciting violence.

Speaking on Newzroom Afrika, he said he was quoted out of context.

He said people should watch the entire video clip so they could see what he meant.

“When I made that video, some communities had already started protecting their assets and properties. So in that video clip I was trying to warn people to be careful in whatever they do. I also emphasised that those who break the law must face the consequences,” said Duduzane.

In the interview he said he was aware that DA has opened a criminal case against him for inciting violence and he said he wasn’t bothered by it.

Former South Africa President Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane has joined other citizens in the province of KwaZulu Natal in cleaning up the streets and shopping malls. The youthful businessman has been critical of his father’s arrest, the cause of the chaos that gripped the southern African nation.

Known for his strong stance against current President Cyril Ramaphosa like his father, Duduzane called out the President for causing the arrest of his father and stated that Zuma is the hope for the poor in the country.

Speaking in a video shared on social media, Zuma said arresting his father was the same as arresting the hopes of the people of South Africa for a better life.

“…they think that they are incarcerating one man, but we need to understand that this man carries the hopes of millions of people in this country. So you think you are locking up one person, you are wrong. This man carries light for many people and is the embodiment of what coming from nothing to becoming someone in life is. He is an old man. He has been poisoned multiple times, They tried to kill him, and forced him to resign, which he did. They continue haunting him and charged him without following due process. He has not had the right to defend himself. Duduzane said as violence swept across KZN and Gauteng provinces

Following reports that the Democratic Alliance and other Civic organisations were opening cases against him and his sister Duduzile, Duduzane quickly distanced himself from the violence.

“Death and destruction is not the solution, vandalism is not the solution, we need to find ways to deal with this situation as it is spiralling out of control. To start with, I’m not on any social media platform. I’m not on Twitter, I have not made any inflammatory or divisive message,” Duduzane said.

Duduzane has now joined hands with communities asking for peace and carrying out cleaning up campaigns.

Duduzane Zuma’s latest statement about his father’s incarceration has got tongues wagging online.

The former president is serving a 15-month sentence of contempt of court at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal. He was handed the sentence by the Constitutional Court after he failed to appear at the state capture inquiry.

In a now-viral video shared on social media, Duduzane said his father’s arrest was a “simple thing” and he was working hard to get him out of prison. He claimed Zuma’s incarceration was not going to solve what is happening in the country, and said his father “carries the hopes, aspirations and dreams of millions of people”.

“You think you’re locking up an individual who is a being on his own. That’s not the case. You’re locking up someone who carries a light for people. You’re locking up someone who is the embodiment of what coming from nothing and becoming somebody in life is about,” said Duduzane.

“You’re locking up someone who has contributed to the best of his abilities to get things to where they are in this country — him and a whole host of other people who have done so before.”

Duduzane said Zuma is an old man who has been “targeted” throughout his political career.

“He’s 79 years old, guys. Stop playing games. There’s more happening in this country than locking up one man you believe is the root cause of all these issues. That’s not the case. Stop lying to people and focus on the real issues,” said Duduzane.

On social media, many users expressed their opinions about the video.

While some applauded him for speaking out in defence of his father, others claimed he lacked understanding of the case.

Newlands East in Durban is far from the glitzy heights of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but that is where Duduzane Zuma is seemingly launching his bid to become president.

The young Zuma has met leaders of the ANC’s ward 11 branch, which includes the former coloured township of Newlands East, and the impoverished areas of Siyanda and Quarry Heights near KwaMashu, eThekwini.

He is said to have told them about his ambitious plan to be elected chair of the branch so that he will be in a position to challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa for the ANC presidency next year.

Duduzane does not live in the area, but the township is home to his wife, Shanice Stork.

ANC insiders said Duduzane has met other branch leaders around KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State to popularise his campaign.

But Duduzane will have a difficult task convincing influential party structures as there seems to be little appetite in the ANC to challenge Ramaphosa next year.

Even if the radical economic transformation forces decide to field a candidate, they are likely to look among senior leaders of the party.

Duduzane’s campaign has already divided the branch, as some suspect he may use its influence to campaign for former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede to return as the party’s regional chair.

Others said they are peeved by the arrogance he displayed when he informed them of his intention to be chair.

Yesterday, Duduzane intensified his campaign by visiting a child-headed household and bringing the family food parcels.

He confirmed to the Sunday Times that he is campaigning to be elected chairman of the branch.

“We are just waiting for the BGM [branch general meeting] to sit, to be elected chair of the branch. Yes, that is the intention. We will see what the outcome is whatever the branch decides but I’m feeling very positive,” Duduzane said on the sidelines of the campaign trail.

Duduzane said the socioeconomic conditions of the area and those of many other communities had propelled him to enter the political scene because that is, he said, the best vehicle to bring about change.

Asked if he is using poor communities as a means to climb the political ladder as he doesn’t live in the community, Duduzane said he is familiar with the community through family ties.

“Just because I don’t live here doesn’t mean I don’t spend time here. I have family in this community – my in-laws are here. Me not being here 100% of my time should not take away from the work that needs to be done.

“It is the same in many communities around the country, people leave and never look back. The whole idea behind what I’m trying to do is to come back and make a difference. These are conditions of people I know,” he said.

He has been lobbying members of the local ANC branch and has held at least two meetings with them, at which he informed them of his plan to challenge Ramaphosa for the leadership of the ANC.

“Yes, the ultimate goal is to contest the presidency of the ANC now. No, we are not talking about the future. Everything we are doing is now, I’m not attaching a date or a conference to what I am doing.”

Duduzane said his biggest motivation behind his bid for the presidency of the ANC is that he does not want to be part of a political leadership that makes promises without delivering on them and changing lives.

He is aware that he is entering the political scene with heavy baggage attached to his name, with corruption allegations against him and his father, former president Jacob Zuma, but said that will not stop him.

“My father is my father, he can never be baggage to me. He is family. How people perceive it, how he has lived his life and what he has done, that is for him. I am walking my own journey.

“Look around, my father is not here. This is something I am doing out of my own volition,” said Duduzane.

The Sunday Times was unable to establish when the branch will meet to elect new leaders, but insiders said Duduzane’s election as branch chair is a “done deal”.

An insider who attended two meetings where Duduzane laid out his proposal for election told the Sunday Times that Zuma jnr is looking for political legitimacy, and fighting him is pointless as he is “very popular”.

“What he wants is to be elected branch chairperson. We tried to negotiate and give him secretary but he refused.

“He says he will not disrupt our plans here in the region and won’t even be involved in the running of the branch.

“He just wants to position himself as an elected leader so that he can contest Cyril in the next conference,” the insider said.

A ‘traditionalist at heart’, Jacob Zuma’s son has been married to Shanice Stork since 2015 and the couple have one child together.

After being probed repeatedly about his rumoured romantic relationship with actress and socialite Thuli Phongolo, Duduzane Zuma simply said “I’m not smashing, let’s just start there. Let’s just be clear.”

Speaking on Podcast and Chill with Mac G, Zuma addressed everything from his status as a sex symbol, his life as the son of a prominent political figure and his own political ambitions.

“It popped up and I don’t know where it popped up from. The unfortunate thing is that there have been a lot of media reports of this nature and of other nature… corruption, fraud that have popped up and they are untrue,” he continued.

Duduzane explained that another reason for him addressing the headline was the fact that people took things as true just because they had been published on a media platform, even when they were not based on fact.

“She’s a beautiful young lady, I have only heard of her now. She’s doing her thing and all the best with whatever she is doing but I don’t know her, let’s just start there. Point number two, I’ve never met her. The third and obvious point is that I’ll categorically deny it.”

He said people had been sending him screenshots of links to reports about the romance.

“Look, from my side, there’s one thing I’ve never done. I do not comment on streets talking, I do not comment on allegations and gossip-mongering. It’s not what I do.”

“Fact, figures, talk to me, we’ll have a conversation. For me to have to worry about what people are saying… If I answer that question, there will be a whole host of other allegations. Now I’ve opened up the door to say ‘if I’ve answered on this topic, then I should be and honest enough to answer on a host of other topics’ and I don’t want to put myself in that position because I don’t owe anyone an explanation when it comes to my personal ongoings that are my business.”

The hour-long interview touched on a number of topics, however, here are some highlights:

Duduzane on polygamy:

Zuma has been married to Shanice Stork since 2015 and the couple have one child together. When asked about whether or not he would be following in his father’s footsteps by adding another wife to the mix, he could not be drawn on a definitive answer.

“‘I’m a traditionalist at heart. I mean, the way life goes, life goes. At this point I’m not sure, I’m not trying to Flava Flav it. At the same time, it’s life, you know. We live life and we see how it progresses.”

“We’ll see, we live life, I don’t have a crystal ball.”

On Julius Malema:

“I’ve only ever met him once, I think he’s a great guy,” said Zuma before adding that they had yet to speak on critical issues or spend a significant amount of time together for him to have a valid opinion on him.

“From my side, when it comes to sowing division based on racial lines, I’m not for that. As much as a lot of us have been disrespected, even by the white race for a period of time, up until today, or we’ve been called all sorts of names, we know what it is but at the end of the day, I still believe that’s not the way.”

On his presidential ambitions:

Zuma is very big on having younger people fill leadership positions in all spheres of society and spoke about this for the majority of his interview with Mac G.

“There is no way that South Africa, as we sit today in the next 10, 15 to 20 years is going to be led commercially, politically by the elder generation into what we expect it to be. So, like I said and with all due respect, there is no way that a 60 or 70-year-old can have a 10-15 year vision on where South Africa should be when a lot of them will not be here. Forget politically, but just physically. That vision needs to be driven by a much younger generation.”

When asked if he ever felt pressure to follow in his dad’s footsteps by carving out a career in politics, Zuma said he never did.

“There’s never been any pressure, there still is no pressure. He did what he needed to do, that’s been his life, he took the political route when he was 16/17 years old and that’s all he knows. Fortunately for some of us, we’ve had options in our lives. I’ve taken the commercial route, the business route and that’s who I became, that’s what I am today. The pressure of politics? No sir..”

He also spoke about being his own man and wanting to build his own legacy.

“Whenever the time comes, I want to be able to say ‘this is what I’ve built’ and it’s hard work.”
