Well-known Mzansi actress Nelisiwe Sibiya who plays on Durban Gen, did not expect to be booed off stage during the Miss and Mr King Cetshwayo District Municipality pageant at the University of Zululand in Empangeni, northern KZN on Friday, 21 July.

According to Zimoja, Nelisiwe had to leave the stage after she called Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters “maqabane” – a term synonymous with African National Congress (ANC) supporters and members. The beauty pageant was organized by the IFP-led Municipality.

“She did not think a simple term will have people going crazy,” said the source.

The source continued: “She is just an actress who probably does not pay attention to politics or protocols, but obviously people won’t know that.”

In response, Nelisiwe said she didn’t know that the term would anger supporters but she denied that she was booked off stage. The actress said that she left because she had to rush back to Durban for other engagements because her segment had ended.

The same event Nelisiwe attended was also attended by Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo who was an MC.

In a video shared by journalist, Sihle Mavuso, Somizi said he will be voting for the IFP.

“I, Somizi Mhlongo, am Inkatha Freedom Party. I don’t care about you. Next year, I’m here. Anything about Inkatha, I’m here.

“If I change, then turn your back against me, we agree? Mayor, you know that I’m voting for Inkatha. I’m not sure about you. But, based on his fashion sense [points at man behind him] I’ll be minister of fashion,” he said.

Durban Gen actress Nelisiwe Sibiya is not happy. This was after the organizers of Miss Culture uMhlathuze Municipality used her name and picture to promote their event.

She took to Facebook on Wednesday, 1 March telling her fans that she is not part of the event, which will take place at Empangeni Civic Centre on Saturday, 4 March.

She even posted the poster with her name and picture, putting an X across it.

Nelisiwe, who plays Dr. Mbali Mthethwa on Durban Gen, told the publication she was booked to host the event but this wasn’t finalized as they didn’t agree on booking fees.

“We did not agree on the money they would pay me. They offered me less money that I couldn’t accept.” she said.

“I want to warn people not to go to the event because they think they’ll see me. I am not part of it.”

Nelisiwe said that she is still thinking about what she’ll do next.

Miss uMhlathuze Municipality organizer, Ntombe Hlongwa, said that they booked Nelisiwe as MC and started discussions on 6 January.

“We discussed event figures and agreed on what I was going to pay her,” said Ntombe.

“But on 29 January, she came back asking for something we could not afford and we agreed that she will not be part of the event because we won’t be able to pay her what she wants.”

Ntombe said, unfortunately, they had already released promotional posters with her name and picture as host.

“We started to release another poster without her, but with Thandeka Zulu of Afrosoul as host. I was surprised when she posted about the event on Facebook, and I’m confused about her intention.

“I never had a fight with her. It was just that we didn’t agree on what she requested to be paid. The event will continue as planned,” said Ntombe.

The singer-actress has however rubbished the romance rumours in an interview with City Press on Friday (11 November):

“Brilliant and I are good friends. People assume that we are dating because they saw us together while we were working on the same project.”

Rumours of the pair dating began when they were allegedly spotted at an AmaZulu versus Kaizer Chiefs game recently.

“People must chill. They will never know who I am dating or if I am dating. I heard about this rumour and people were calling me and asking about him. No, I am not dating him.”

“I won’t even deny that I was with him because I was with him at the soccer match. I was with him as my date on the day someone flaked on me because she was working. So, I ended up sitting next to Brilliant and spending time with him at the match.”

A local publication reports that the Durban Gen actress Nelisiwe Sibiya revealed in July this year why she broke it off with gospel star Ayanda Ntanzi in 2019.

In an interview on Engineer Your Life with Lungelo KM, the singer and actress said:

“I was dating Ayanda Ntanzi, in fact, we were engaged, I dated him from when we were still very young during varsity years, so yeah he is a very nice man. We were engaged until 2019. We were engaged as in English engagement.”

NELISIWE WEARS a naughty smile, the short traditional dress of the Zulu maiden and very little else, and she is certainly beautiful.

But she hides behind that lovely smile and refuses to answer the question she gets asked all the time, whether she has had tlof tlof or not before.

“Is she still itshitshi, or isn’t she?” This is the one question she won’t answer.

Nelisiwe Sibiya (30), who plays Dr Mbali on Durban Gen, revealed that she has people asking her about her virginity.

“This is because of the way I dress in my traditional attire and the way I portray myself as a proud Zulu girl on social media. I don’t know how to say this. But I don’t mind people complimenting my beauty when I’m dressed traditionally,” she said.

But she won’t go any further.

“I wear my clothes exactly the way I want to, but I don’t think it’s anyone’s right to know whether I’m still a virgin or not. That is for me and my family to know,” she said.

She said many people ask her the question.

“As far as I’m concerned it’s an inappropriate question. Some people think the way I present myself gives them rights to voice their opinion. But I’m not bothered,” she said.

She said she believes it comes with being in the entertainment industry.

“Unfortunately I’ve never heard people asking a proud Zulu man if he is a virgin,” she said, still smiling.

She said people even asked her if she was going to attend the Zulu Reed Dance.

“I didn’t attend the dance due to personal reasons,” said Nelisiwe.

There are also people who accuse her of dating men from the industry.

“There are evil people out there who think that they are entitled to bash celebrities. I’ve been accused of dating celebrity guys. But I’m lucky because my family understands,” she said.

Her love for culture doesn’t only draw negative attention.

She is also nominated for Best Traditional Influencer at the South African Traditional Music Awards that will be held in Mpumalanga this weekend.

Nomagugu Ngobese, said that it is good to see young public figures like Nelisiwe being proud of who they are.

Nomagugu, who is a cultural activist and the founder of Nomkhubulwane Culture and Youth Development Organisation, said according to the Zulu culture, how a women wears is determined by her status.

“A virgin dresses a certain way. She hides nothing. A non-virgin normally hides private parts including boobs. And a married woman also wears clothes in a certain way,” she said.

“Unfortunately we are living in times where everyone brags about their constitutional rights rather than looking at what culture or tradition tells us.”

She said she’s not saying that people have the right to question a woman’s virginity.

“But as women who love our culture we must set an example and be the ones educating people about our culture,” she said.
