Veteran South African actress Connie Chiume has spilled all the beans on the latest episode of Podcast and Chill with MacG. Mme Connie Chuime’s cry is the fact that they as creatives as freelancers for the rest of their lives.

Connie Chiume left no stone unturned as she exposes a number of ills that they are faced with as creatives and actresses. Mme Connie Chiume continues to insert that they are not even allowed to claim for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

“Our industry is so cruel guys, you know it is so cruel. We are freelancers and you know you are a freelancer for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, even with our government where we pay 25 percent tax, they still don’t classify us as workers. So, which means you can’t even go to claim UIF, like, they are using us” said Connie Chiume

Amongst other things that Mme Connie Chiume touched on is how she almost did make it for the Black Panther project in America. Connie Chiume insert that money became an issue as she did not have anyone to fund her ticket. Until the office of the NFVF came to her rescue, hence she ended up making it to America.

“When I was going to the Black Panther, I was struggling to get money for the ticket. Because I was not one of the cast members who were going to be… my flight was not gonna be funded, it was not on my contract. I wanted to go, thanks to NFVF, though NFVF I managed to go. But I remember there was a time when I wanting to give up, because I have been knocking on doors and I can’t find funding for my tickets” said Connie Chiume

Back when she was still trying to finding herself, Connie Chuime enrolled to study nursing but she was kicked out from a nursing school shortly after falling pregnant. Before becoming an actress, Mme Connie Chiume enrolled to study nursing, when things did not go as planned, how she moved to teaching.

“After my matric l moved to Thembisa Hospital to study nursing. I was supposed to undergo a three-year training. Trust me those days things were difficult. They were strict laws which states that if you fall pregnant during your training u should never come back. I then fall pregnant with my first child and l can safely say l was kicked out of the nurse training course” said Connie Chiume

After she was kicked out from the nursing college, Connie Chiume was still determined to have some sort of qualification in her name. She later on enrolled with Wilberforce College to pursue her teaching studies.

“After l was kicked out of nursing, l joined Wilberforce college in Evaton. That’s where l learned my teaching skills. However, the job gave us small salaries, leaving me interested in trying new things and venturing into acting” said Connie Chiume

Will a number of awards under her belt, Connie Chiume is even internationally acclaimed and she continues to the Mzansi’s favorite actress.

South African actress Connie Chiume – who plays the character of MamSonto in Gomora revealed that she almost took her own life 20 years ago at Siyabonga Zubane’s memorial service on Thursday.

Zubane’s memorial service was held at the Joburg Theatre on Thursday (12 May) afternoon.

Actress Connie Chiume –who plays MamSonto in Gomora shared at Siyabonga Zubane’s memorial that she attempted to take her own life years.

23-year-old actor Siyabonga Zubane – who portrayed the role of Sdumo in Gomora apparently committed suicide last week.

Chiume shared she attempted to end her life after her daughter died while she was feeding her.

The veteran added that she had suicidal thoughts that she never shared with anyone after her daughter’s passing.

She also told her co-stars at the memorial that there’s a demonic spirit that had taken over her body and wanted her to commit suicide- but she conquered the demonic thoughts by praying.

“It’s so difficult to stand here and speak about young talent and young creative like Siya.”

“A child that we were still looking forward to seeing where he is going. We are hurt by his departure.”

“I understand what his parents are going through because I almost took my own life.”

South African actress Connie Chiume who plays the role of Mamsonto on Mzansi Magic telenovela Gomora, has wowed Mzansi by introducing her family. Connie was born on (born 5 June 1952) in Welkom, Free State Province, to a Malawian father and a South African mother. She completed her matric in Eastern Cape, studied, and graduated with a degree in Teaching in 1976; she taught in government schools for 11 years before moving to Greece, where she had a brief stay.

On her return to South Africa, the educationist Connie Chiume landed a role on Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, where she played Thembi. She became famous when she played Stella Moloi in SABC 1 drama series Zone 14, winning a SAFTA Award for the role.

She joined the Gomora cast in 2020, where she played the role of Mamsonto, the matriarchy of the Molefe family and tavern owner who leads a car hijacking syndicate. Through her car hijacking business, she killed Mbongeni Ndaba, her son in law and husband to her firstborn daughter Thathi (Katlego Danke). MamSonto lives with her children Pretty and Thathi and her grandchildren; her household turned into a warzone when Thathi and her children Langa and Buhle returned from Sandton, where they lived with an attitude.

Known for taking away the lives of those who crossed her paths in Gomora, Connie Chiume is the extreme opposite of her Mamsonto character. She is a loving mother of three, with two sons and one daughter and five grandchildren in real life.

Legendary actress Connie Chiume is showing no signs of slowing down, despite turning 69 years yesterday.

The Gomora actress, known as the township’s feisty gang leader Mam’sonto, will today celebrate her birthday with close family and friends at Somizi’s Cooking Sunday at Co.fi Brooklyn.

The excited actress said though she was now facing 70, she was still willing to stay in front of the cameras for as long as old age did not force her to forget her scripts.

“At this age, I should be much grateful that my creator has kept me strong and healthy because not many people witness this moment. That is why I don’t even hide my age like many people in the industry do.

“I am excited to be celebrating my birthday and more excited that it is actually my last year in the 60s. I feel blessed, it does not even feel like I am on set right now because my colleagues always make me happy – that’s one of my secrets to staying this beautiful as a gogo,” she laughed.

In her 44 years of being in the entertainment industry, the award-winning Chiume has been celebrated as a well-talented actress who has shown her skills on the internationally recognised Black Panther and Black is King – including local shows such as Zone 14 and Rhythm City.

She said the acting space allowed her to explore different characters. But in all, she was most grateful that it has allowed her to stay occupied and kept her looking young.

The mother of four jokingly said she was blessed to be from a family that did not get any wrinkles, citing that her mother, who passed away two days before turning 98, left this world with not a single wrinkle on her face.

“It is all in my lovely genes, sweetheart. Looking at it though, happiness also keeps you young. My family, friends and colleagues bring up that smile every day.”
