#JusticeforThapelo: 2 arrested as Tuks student Thapelo Menwe is murdered for cellphone

The murder of 23-year-old University of Pretoria Honours student Thapelo Menwe, who was allegedly killed for his cellphone, has sparked outrage on social media.

Social media users are calling for #JusticeForThapelo.

Menwe was allegedly robbed and shot close to the Tuksdorp residence in Hatfield, Pretoria, on his way home at about 2am on Saturday, September 10.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the police responded swiftly on being informed of the incident and have arrested two suspects aged 33 and 38.

“The two suspects attacked the 23-year-old student who was walking in Hatfield in the early hours on Saturday, shot him, and took his belongings before they jumped into the getaway vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla.

“The getaway car was later noticed by police during routine patrols as it matched the description given to police. The two occupants were searched and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and the deceased’s personal belongings,” said Masondo.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended officers from the Brooklyn police station for their prompt response which led to the arrest of suspects before they could leave the area.

He further extended his gratitude to the community members and private security guards who alerted the police about the shooting incident.

Meanwhile, the University of Pretoria said on Twitter: “It is with great shock and sadness that the University of Pretoria confirms the death of one of our students in the early hours of Saturday in Hatfield, close to the Tuksdorp residence.

“The suspect has been arrested. We strongly condemn the violence.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s friends and family, whom we are offering counselling.”

Friends and members of the university community have also expressed concern following the incident.

Ex-Generations actress Zoe Mthiyane opens up on how raising children with Robert Marawa & Lebo M is

Former Generations: The Legacy actress Zoe Mthiyane has opened up about the highs and lows of raising children with Robert Marawa and Lebo M.

Zoe Mthiyane fell pregnant twice after enjoying tlof tlof with both sports presenter Robert Marawa and The Lion King producer Lebo Morake. The actress therefore has a child with these two celebrities.

Zoe says motherhood can be incredibly challenging for a career-driven and ambitious woman. However, she says raising her children gives her the drive to be the best version of herself.

“I would describe parenting with Robert Marawa as respectful. Our families and close friends have played a major role in creating and maintaining a safety net around our son, and for that I will forever be grateful. He [the boy] is lucky,” says Mthiyane.

She says it is a different story trying to co-parent with Lebo M.

“Parenting with Lebo M is impossible. We had to find ways to cope with that fact. However, I am lucky to have had intensive therapy, valuable advice and support to lean on. I practice gentle parenting as I learned early on that each child is born with their own personality.”

Lebo M, real name Lebohang Morake of the Broadway hit Lion King fame, the internationally acclaimed composer and producer, and Mthiyane broke off their engagement in 2016, “amid disagreements over a pre-nuptial agreement”.

“I have been doing well since 2016, having escaped an incredibly toxic situation in which I was required to navigate a well-orchestrated smear campaign organised by somebody I loved and trusted… that situation helped tutor me to better understand my own power.”

She later got into a relationship with fellow actor Rapulana Seiphemo but the relationship too fell apart amid allegations of infidelity. Shortly after the breakup, she left Generations: The Legacy, where she co-starred with Seiphemo.

“Since leaving Generations, I have featured in a Charlie Vundla movie, Hotel on the Koppies, which was recently released on Amazon. I have also had the opportunity to travel, do live performances and put my music hat on.

“Exiting Generations was a difficult decision but necessary as I had started to regress in my efforts to remain consistent in my growth and mental health.

“I was finding it difficult to counter the resistance coming my way from some people. With that I say, I am grateful for the growth and confidence I gained from portraying Zitha and I am truly grateful to the writers, producers and viewers whose support gave me the confidence to expand as a storyteller.”

Asked if she is back on the dating scene, Mthiyane simply says she is not looking at entering a new relationship any time soon. “My energy and focus lie elsewhere.”

Zuma wants to bounce back: I’ll be ANC Chairman and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will replace Ramaphosa

Zuma wants to bounce back: I'll be ANC Chairman and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will replace Ramaphosa

ANC leaders supportive of former president Jacob Zuma sought to dissuade him from the idea that he should contest as ANC national chairperson at the December conference.

Zuma is said to have revealed that he had been lobbied to return to active politics and contest for that position in a line-up that includes Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for president and Supra Mahumapelo as the secretary-general of the ANC.

Zuma met with a delegation of ANC national executive committee (NEC) members led by suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule at his Nkandla homestead on Saturday.

“Zuma told them that he is being lobbied by the veterans and other groups that he must contest as the national chairperson. They heard him out, but there is no way a former president who led the organisation and left should now be elected to another position,” a source with intimate knowledge of the meeting said.

The source added Zuma had to be dissuaded from that idea by the leaders present at the meeting.

Two leaders with intimate knowledge of the meeting said Zuma appeared hell-bent that his allies should reignite a campaign to have Dlamini-Zuma elected president.

He is said to have firmly expressed his wish that his allies should not be “defocused” and consider any other candidate to contest President Cyril Ramaphosa for the ANC presidency at the December elective conference.

“He expressed his wish that we support Dlamini-Zuma and that there was no need to change candidates. We said we would have to discuss it with regions and structures and then decide on a single candidate,” the well-placed insider said.

The delegation – which included NEC members Dakota Legoete, Tony Yengeni and Mahumapelo – among others – are said to have told Zuma there were two other ANC leaders who were being considered to oppose him – Zweli Mkhize and Lindiwe Sisulu.

“There is a position that there must be a woman candidate. But there is also a consideration that structures in KwaZulu-Natal would want to pronounce Mkhize [as the preferred candidate to contest Ramaphosa]. They said we would have to discuss it and come up with a name by the end of the week,” the second source said.

On Sunday, the Sunday Times reported that Dlamini-Zuma had confirmed that she would accept the nomination to contest Ramaphosa at the December conference.

It is reported that a wider meeting is being planned for Thursday at Nkandla where Zuma’s allies across party structures are expected to finalise who they would back to oppose Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa is seeking a second term as ANC president and has the support from at least four provincial structures of the party – Limpopo, the North West, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape.

The second well-placed insider told News24 Zuma was told his wishes would be communicated to party structures “but it is not a given that what he wants will happen”.

“All uBaba [Zuma] can do is express his wish. Beyond that, he can’t impose anything. Structures will decide,” the source said.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal leaders are due to meet in earnest to finalise who the province will support as branches hold their general meetings to nominate leaders to take over the ANC in December.

An ANC KwaZulu-Natal regional leader told News24 they were disappointed “the province is being torn apart because former leaders want to have their way”.

When the newly elected ANC provincial leadership visited Zuma last month, he had committed to helping the provincial leadership unite the ANC in the province.

“We have to be focused on uniting the ANC, and that is why as KZN we agreed that we will only put up one candidate, and that is to contest the president,” the regional leader said.

He added despite a bid by ANC leaders who hail from KwaZulu-Natal for them to be supported for other top six positions, the province agreed that it would only contest the presidency.

There is a push for ANC NEC member and former ANC KwaZulu-Natal leader Senzo Mchunu to be supported as a deputy president candidate, while former ANC provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli is being lobbied to contest the secretary-general position.

“As KZN, we said we will only stick to one position. Now, we will have to debate who is the person we support fully to contest the [ANC] presidency.

“We are still waiting for the special PEC [provincial executive committee] to discuss the matter of the national conference. We will wait for that meeting to discuss the matter,” the regional leader said.

ANC branch general meetings will begin this week, where branches will nominate their preferred leaders for the party’s top leadership.
