Miss SA organisers speak on calls to boycott Miss Universe 2021 pageant in Israel

Instead of enjoying her reign as Miss SA 2021 Lalela Mswane has been facing a lot of flak ahead of her imminent departure for Israel. Less than a month into her new role, she has been the victim of character assassination across the TLs.

It’s been common practice since the inception of the pageant for its winner to head out to the next pageant which is the Miss Universe. After her crowning it was announced that she would be taking part at the 70th Miss Universe pageant in Israel.

The pageant that’s set to take place at Eliat in Israel on December 12 has got Mzansi in a frenzy.

Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, has called for her to boycott the pageant for the “occupation and the cruel treatment of Palestinians at the hands of the apartheid Israel regime”, IOL reported.

Mzansi followed suit with calls for Lalela to withdraw from participating in the pageant.

She has been mum on the saga, even though Mzansi has intensified efforts to get her to say something about the matter.

TimesLIVE reported that the Palestine Solidarity Alliance has also accused the beauty queen of not caring about the plight of Palestinians and being “worried about her own self gains”.

The Miss SA Organisation told TshisaLIVE it was “not getting involved in a political war of words and looks forward to watching Miss SA make the country proud on an international stage”.

Grammy Award-winning isicathamiya group Ladysmith Black Mambazo is on a mission to keep its legacy alive for future generations.

The internationally acclaimed group is planning to publish a book about its history and the life of its late founder, Joseph Shabalala.

Group co-leader Sibongiseni Shabalala, Joseph’s son, told Daily Sun the book would come out before the end of year.

“It is important to tell the group’s history, as well as my father’s, to teach the next generation about our unique traditional music.”

Sibongiseni said together with other members, they did not want their name to disappear.

“We are finalising the publishing of our book, and also planning a lecture about the history of the group in November.

“We do many things to keep the group’s legacy alive. We have the Ladysmith Black Mambazo Mobile Academy, that visits different schools to teach people about isicathamiya.”He said they shared stories of how the group overcame challenges to teach them never to give up.

“We are also finalising the process of releasing our new album. It will come out in December before we resume our overseas tours, that were interrupted by the lockdown,” he said.

Sibongiseni said on 28 November, a documentary about his father and the group titled Legacy Tribute: Dr Joseph Shabalala, would be aired on SABC2 at 9pm.

In August, Ladysmith Black Mambazo introduced nine a cappella groups the mobile academy had discovered in different parts of the country.

“When the pandemic hit last year, I noticed many people lost their jobs. I realised there is money to be made around our homes,” she said.

“I grew up planting bananas and taking care of cattle at home. I realised this could be turned into a business.”

Mroza, who has been with the radio station for 15 years, urged everyone to try and have a side hustle.

“Jobs disappear, and when that happens, we will be helped by the things we grew up doing. People should get their hands dirty and go into agriculture.

“They can even consider construction as people are always in need of houses.”

She said she worked with experienced farmers at her vegetable and banana farm in Dokodweni and also had help from professionals at her animal farm in Jozini.

“The pandemic also taught me the importance of working with other people to do more and go further. I witness this as I work with people who have experience in farming,” she added.

“We are making fast progress because they know how to do the job while I use social media to advertise.”
