Former Miss South Africa 2020 Shudufhadzo Abigail Musida has authored and launched her second children’s book titled I am Shudu: Finding My Voice, Knowing My Strength. Musida’s first book, Shudu Finds Her Magic, is inspired by her own childhood and the bullying she experienced when she moved to a new province and a new school.

The book was created in hope of shining a light on bullying and engaging conversations about mental health especially in schools. Shudu Finds Her Magic is specifically aimed at children aged between four and 12 years old and also focuses on the power of friendship.

“Although she could not read or write, she knew the importance of reading. She always asked me if I was brushing my teeth and reading books”, Shudufhadzo shared. Shudufhadzo Musida’s new book, I am Shudu explores various themes, including friendships, displaced families, bravery, forgiveness and bullying.

Once again through this new body of work Shudufhadzo documents her childhood and how she was bullied. The book also details Shudu’s evolution into finding herself again. Bullying and sadness can often be normalised in our society, and we don’t realise that there’s something wrong with it because no one tells us otherwise. We need to reframe what the word ‘resilience’ looks like when it comes to children”, the author shared.

Musida also noted that she hopes that youngsters who do read her books find parts of themselves somewhere among the pages. I am writing the books for you to read because I want to have conversations that matter to you. I think you’re all so intelligent. I write the books for you to understand that you’re seen and that you’re heard. I write the books for you to understand yourselves better”, she explained.

Shudufhadzo Musiḓa is the host of a new TV show on Afimaxx, Channel 176. The former Miss South African shared a snippet of what the show entails and she’s elated about the journey. Taking to Instagram on Monday, Shudu expressed excitement about how she’s grown to this current level.

“Growing up, I felt like I always existed in the shadows and in the background, places I felt I could slip away into because I never quite felt good enough to be remarked at in any kind of way. I was shy, awkward looking, somewhat nerdy and found companionship and friendship with my books at home. There was nothing particularly special about me and I was often reminded of that, both by those around me and subsequently by myself too,” she wrote.

“It was strange because I always admired society’s bold and beautiful that were celebrated, revered and loved. From stages, to billboards, to TV screens, it was a life I could only dream of, but couldn’t shake the feeling that it would never be for me. It was only when I started believing in myself, my ability, my value, and what I had to offer, that things in my life started changing. I’m so happy I took that big step out of the shadows and emerged from the background.

“This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to experience the full journey of the marathon that lies ahead, step by step with so much to change and so much to accomplish along the way to inspire that change,” she added,

Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida, unfortunately did not make it to the Top 12 at the 70th Miss World pageant, which was held at the Coca-Cola Music Hall in San Juan, Puerto Rico this morning.

Representing South Africa, twenty-six-year-old Musida – who comes from Ha-Masia in Venda in Limpopo – was one of the front runners throughout the competition. Her win in the prestigious Beauty With a Purpose (BWAP) segment of the pageant fast tracked her into the top 40 Miss World semi-finalists. Musida’s BWAP win was based on her advocacy campaign that focused on removing the stigma associated with mental illness. Miss World judges were impressed with the weekly IGTV Live sessions – Mindful Mondays – that she hosted with mental health experts

These shone a spotlight on “taboo” subjects like depression and suicide. Musida also wrote a children’s book, Shudu Finds Her Magic, which told the story of how she overcame bullying as a child. The glittering Miss World event was hosted by TV personality Peter Andre and one of Latin America’s top actors and singers, Fernando Allende. Said Musida after the pageant: “I am absolutely thrilled to have made it so far in the competition.

This truly is a dream come true and I am so very grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity. Congratulations to the newly crowned Miss World 2021 Karolina Bielawska and all the other contestants who made this journey so special. I am deeply thankful for the opportunity and to everyone who has supported and uplifted me.”

Both Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa Organisation, and Miss South Africa creative director, Werner Wessels, were in Puerto Rico to support Musida. Said Weil: “Although Shudu did not make it to the top 12, she definitely shined throughout the competition and has made all of us South Africans very proud!”

On the finalé stage, Shudu was stunning in the magnificent evening gown designed for her by Cape Town designer, Warrick Gautier. One of the leading influences in the fashion world who travels regularly between Cape Town, London and Paris, Gautier is inspired by art, music, architecture and his
French heritage. He said: “Shudu’s shimmering blush golden gown was inspired by Shudu’s own unique beauty that radiates from within like an African sunrise at the start of a fresh magical day. It’s a strong, modern, powerful and glamorously feminine gown – just like Shudu.”

“Once they get to the link, they’ll get to see articles about me and all they need to do is read the articles and engage with them by sharing and sending me their comments and tell me which articles they want me to send on the page next,” she said.

“They just need to do that as many times as they can. This just simply shows interest and also helps me with knowing what content they want to know about my Miss World journey,” said Shudu.

The aim is to reach 100 000 views, and by the looks of things, her fans will succeed in encouraging others to watch her video.

Shudu recently unveiled her Miss World gown which was inspired by Miss SA’s crown; Buhle. Designed by Warrick Gautier, the gown features a long red skirt and flowing train.Shudufhadzo Musida

” When we started discussing ideas around what I wanted my Designer of the World gown to be I knew that I wanted to incorporate one specific thing…’Buhle’. The Miss South Africa crown that I wore with so much pride and with an immense sense of responsibility knowing what the crown represented, not only to myself but also for so many young girls who see the crown for what it truly means. Passion, purpose, responsibility and service. I want this dress to represent our dreams and that they have so much value, not matter where you come from,” she said.Shudufhadzo Musida1

Another model who recently left Mzansi to participate in an international pageant is Miss South Africa 2021 Lalela Mswane. Her journey to Miss Universe was not easy. She got criticised by the public because of her willingness to participate in the Miss Universe pageant which will be held in Eliat, Israel on December 12.

The reason for this according to Mandla Mandela, is because “Israel is an Apartheid State and persists in its heinous occupation and expansion of its illegal settlements in violation of international law. We must persist in isolating Apartheid Israel in the same way that we isolated Apartheid South Africa.

Speaking to The Jerusalema Post she said, “If I had not come to Israel to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, I think I would have regretted it for the rest of my life,”

The model graced the Miss Universe stage in Israel a costume dubbed as “A Dove of Peace.” The white bodysuit had subtle feathers printed to serve as a base for the feathered arms covered in white pheasant feathers to transform Miss South Africa into a dove of peace.

Attached is a silk chiffon cape to show that women can be both strong and feminine. The beaded off shoulder detail is inspired by Buhle to celebrate her country and the people she is representing,” he said.

“The finale gown represents the rich glistening mineral resources South Africa has juxtaposed with the soft glowing African sunrise. It is a shimmering, sophisticated gown that dazzles and emphasises Shudu’s incredible beauty.”

Said Wessels, who accompanied Musida to South America: “She has been working hard and is ready to take to the Miss World stage. Shudu is going to do South Africa proud!”
