Award-winning actress Lindiwe Ndlovu laid to rest
SAFTA award-winning actress Lindiwe Ndlovu was laid to rest at Mophela Cemetery in Hammarsdale, west of Durban, on Saturday (16 January).

The 44 year-old actress, who’s best known for playing Patjutju on Uzalo and Sponono on Zabalaza, died on Monday after a short illness.

Her family and friends gathered at her home in Hammarsdale to pay their last respects, while following all Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

In the emotional but short funeral service, which lasted for one hour and had only four speakers on the programme, Lindiwe was described as a humble and strong person.

Her friend Susan Mongake told Daily Sun she met Lindiwe 20 years ago in Joburg and she was like a sister to her.

“She was my real sister and she taught me many things. She taught me to cook and eat uphuthu.

“Lindiwe was like my sibling and she was many things to me. She promised to visit me on Sunday as we normally visited each other.

“I was looking to hosting her in my home but I received the bad news that she was no more. I’m still asking myself many questions about why she left me like this,” she said.

Lindiwe’s brother Dumisani Msimango told the People’s Paper she was strong bust also humble.

He said many people wanted to attend her funeral service but they were turned them down because of Covid-19.

“She had a strong character and I was not surprised when I saw her being given strong characters on TV.

“I was with her at our home in Joburg last Sunday when we were arranging her accommodation because their acting industry is not doing well because of these Covid-19 lockdown,” he said.
Dumisani said Lindiwe died happy and excited as she had just scored a role on Mzansi Magic’s Gomora after a long time of not working.

“She was shooting on Gomora and we were arranging for her to get a place closer to the set of the show.”

Lindiwe has acted in many movies and TV dramas such as Lockdown and Ifalakhe.

She scooped the best actress in feature film award at the SAFTAs in 2013.

Lynne said that Lindiwe died in her sleep on the morning of January 11 due to health complications, but would not be drawn into speculation that her death was related to Covid.

It’s been a very difficult day. She passed this morning. She had medical issues, high blood pressure and so on. She apparently had trouble breathing and passed away in her sleep. I do not know if her death was related to Covid,” she said.

Lynne added that Lindiwe had been close to her heart and that she would never forget her smile.

She was just the happiest when she was smiling. She lit up the room with her smile.”

Lindiwe’s career began more than a decade ago when she played the role of Qondi in Mazinyo Dot Q. She soon became known in homes all over Mzansi when she graced the screen as the Malawian maid Buseje on SABC1’s Ses’Top La.

The South African film and television industry has suffered a blow after actress Lindiwe Thembekani Ndlovu died at her home on Monday morning, Gaenor Artiste Management confirmed.

“It is with heavy hearts and unimaginable sadness that we bring you the news of Lindiwe Thembekani Ndlovu passing in her home on 11 January.

“Her bright, large burning light has gone out and we are devastated,” the agency. The cause of death remains unknown at this stage. Gaenor Artiste Management, which represented Ndlovu, hailed the multi-award winning actress, saying her passing would leave a “huge space in the creative world of acting”.

“To us, Lindiwe was family but to many she was so much more.

“An unsung incredible actress who will leave a huge space in the creative world of acting.”

“Her incredible passion, deep respect for her craft and unrivalled commitment to her career was evident in every project she took on.”

The agency also sent its condolences to Ndlovu’s family and friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends of which she had many.

“Lindiwe was part of the fabric of Gaenor Artist Management and things will not be the same without her.”

Her career spanned a decade in many roles, including in soapies such as Egoli, Stokvel, Soul City, Scandal! and Isidingo, Backstage, Ga Re Dumele and Home Affairs. Lindiwe Ndlovu also portrayed: MaKhumalo in eHostela.

The television series explored the dangerous and unpredictable world of paid assassins.

Ndlovu played the character MaKhumalo – also known as MaMkhize.

MaKhumalo is a mother of one of the assassins and she knows very well the life her child has chosen.

Her character struggles to decide when to reveal the secrecy of the underworld and potentially to save her son.

Safari

The movie, Safari, is set against the backdrop of SA wildlife where animals and poachers rule. A Zulu girl, Mbali, meets a US tourist group on safari.

Ndlovu played Mbali’s aunt as the group navigate hunting grounds and face the untamed wild.

Feature film Little One

This film, released in 2012, follows the story of a middle-aged woman named Pauline played by Ndlovu. She finds a battered child on the road and take her to hospital for treatment. Pauline then takes the child away to find out why she became a victim of violence. The film landed Ndlovu the Best Actress in a Feature Film award at the Saftas in 2013.

Lockdown

The most prominent role Ndlovu is known for is her portrayal of evil prison guard Sharon on Mzansi TV series Lockdown.

The hit prison drama, which aired in 2017, takes viewers into the daily battle for survival in the cells and offices of Thabazimbi Women’s Correctional Facility.

The death of veteran actress Lindiwe Ndlovu has plunged the film and television industry into mourning as award-winning director Mandla Ncgongwane, who worked closely with her, describes what a talented thespian she was.

News of Lindiwe’s death was confirmed by her agent, Lynne Higgins of Gaenor Artiste Management, on Monday evening.

She died in her sleep on the morning of January 11 due to health complications. It is not clear whether her death was related to Covid-19.

“I mean, I’m in shock right now,” said Mandla when he learnt of the passing of the veteran actress on Monday.

“I just got the news. We confirmed the news with the agent. It was said she had complications but I’m not clear what it was, I don’t have all the details but I can confirm she is late.”

Mandla said the veteran actress was a part of his team of actors who were there since the inception of his production company. He said Lindiwe helped put “great stories” on the small screen.

“As Blackbrain Pictures, she’s been working with us from the very beginning. I’m saddened by the news. She was a talented actress and huge part of our world. She made great stories with us so we will definitely contribute to something in terms of remembering her.”

Mandla expressed his hopes for South Africans not to become desensitised by death as many are claimed by the coronavirus every day.

“We’ve been losing so many people. It’s really scary. As long as we don’t get to a point where we are desensitised by death.”
