A tragic incident has unfolded in KwaZulu-Natal, leaving the whole province reeling in shock and grief.

A police sergeant, who served as a bodyguard for King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, has been implicated in a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a young woman, Phumla Mtshali (26). The sergeant, who fled the scene, was later found dead in a hotel room in Umhlanga, north of Durban, after taking his own life.

The incident occurred on Friday, 16 August, on Phoenix Highway in Phoenix. A black Toyota Fortuner, belonging to the South African Police Service (SAPS), ran over Phumla, leaving her dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, the police sergeant, fled the scene.

Philie kaMaNgidi Mtshali, Phumla’s sister, expressed her outrage and grief, stating that the driver abandoned her sister to die like a dog.

“He ran away to report the vehicle as stolen and left my sister to die like a dog. He even sent someone later to remove the number plate. They didn’t know that a local security company had already taken pictures of the number,” she said.

“We won’t rest until justice is served. We won’t let the suspect get away with the murder of our sister,” kaMaNgidi Mtshali said.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesman, Prem Balram, confirmed that a registration plate belonging to the car was recovered at the scene, but it was removed by an unknown person shortly after.

He said that Rusa officers later located the accident-damaged vehicle, a black Toyota Fortuner, on a farmer’s property. The vehicle was fitted with blue emergency lights and was missing its registration plates.

Rusa officers conducted a vehicle ownership check and confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the SAPS. It was reported stolen at the Phoenix SAPS on Friday, but it was later established that it was the same vehicle involved in the hit-and-run accident.

Prince Simphiwe Zulu, spokesman for King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, confirmed that the 48-year-old police sergeant who committed suicide was a bodyguard of the King. He declined to comment further on the matter, stating that it was under investigation.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that police in Phoenix have opened a culpable homicide case following the incident. He said that a case of vehicle theft is also under investigation.

Netshiunda stated that the sergeant, who was the last person to be in possession of the state vehicle, reported the vehicle stolen at the Phoenix police station. The vehicle was later found abandoned in a sugarcane field.

On Monday, 19 August, police received reports that the 48-year-old sergeant who was implicated in the hit-and-run incident had taken his own life.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run accident and the subsequent suicide.

“Circumstances surrounding the apparent suicide incident form part of police investigations,” said Netshiunda.

Disputed AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and a faction aligned to him within the Zulu royal family have launched legal action in a bid to nullify the late King Goodwill Zwelithini’s marriage to his first wife, Queen Sibongile Dlamini.

This follows an application by Dlamini and her two daughters before the Pietermaritzburg High Court, in which they challenge Misuzulu’s ascendancy to the throne.

They claim that his mother, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, became regent of the Zulu nation by way of a forged will and then irregularly recommended her son to the throne.

In papers seen by Eyewitness News, Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s lawyers have legally notified Queen Sibongile Dlamini that they want her marriage to the late AmaZulu King Goodwill Zwelithini declared null and void.

The lawyers intend to file the papers in the Pietermaritzburg High Court as the family continues to squabble over the throne.

Dlamini – who is not related to the late Queen Mantfombi – married King Zwelithini on 27 December 1969.

She wants 50% of the late king’s estate, claiming that she was married to him in community of property.

The legal notice by MisuZulu has also been shared with Dlamini’s daughters, princesses Ntandoyenkosi Zulu and Ntombizosuthu Zulu-Duma.

The princesses, together with some members of the Zulu monarchy, want Misuzulu off the throne, claiming that his ascension to the powerful position was illegal.

Zulu King, King Misuzulu kazwelithini hospitalized as race to throne becomes deadly

Though the Amazulu traditional prime minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has maintained that the nation’s has been given a clean bill of health,

Celebgossip.co.za has learnt that he was hospitalised due to an undisclosed condition.

According to royal insiders, the illness of the king, whose legitimacy to the throne is being challenged by his siblings, has been kept on the hush-hush after he was admitted to hospital in a serious condition last week.

“For weeks now he hasn’t been feeling well. Initially, we all thought that he might be suffering from fatigue, but his condition worsened. He then started exhibiting symptoms of serious flu,” a royal insider who didn’t want to speak on the record told Sunday World yesterday.

“This led to him being admitted to hospital for medical observation. For now, we do not know what the cause of his unwellness could be.”

Misuzulu’s no-show at major ceremonies at the royal house fuelled speculations that he had severe health problems. Last week, the king, who is yet to be installed, missed a crucial media briefing where the royal house notified Amazulu nation on the ending of the mourning period for the late King Zwelithini kabhekuzulu.

The briefing was also aimed at addressing the kingship status amid the court application challenging the nomination of MisuZulu to the throne. It emerged at the briefing that the king did not attend the pivotal cleansing ceremony and the hunting ritual, known in Isizulu as ihlambo. According to Isizulu cultural norms and beliefs, the reigning

King Misuzulu should have presided over the rituals.

Sources at the Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, a Durban-based private hospital, also confirmed to Sunday World that the king was this week admitted at the hospital.

“We all knew that somebody important was at the hospital because of the heavily armed bodyguards and the police presence. We later found out that it was in fact the king who had been admitted for medical observation,” said the insider.

She added that it was not clear what tests were conducted on the king. “I think it might be related to some unknown complications. He was at the hospital for a day or two,” she said.

This week, Misuzulu also issued a communique postponing a prayer meeting commemorating his great-grandfather King Dinuzulu. The ceremony was scheduled to be held this weekend for two days. The king said the postponement of the gathering was due to Covid-19 protocols prohibiting large gatherings.

“I wish to inform the Zulu nation that the prayer will not take place on 26 and 27 June. It will be held at a future date when doing so will be both safe and legal,” read the communique.

Sunday World has learnt that concerns surrounding the health of Misuzulu have been exacerbated by the death of his mother, Queen Regent Mantfombi Dlamini, in April under mysterious circumstances. The queen, who was Zwelithini’s third wife, succumbed to an undisclosed illness, but it is widely believed she was poisoned after deadly toxins were found in her liver.

There are also allegations that the bad blood between the royal siblings over the throne had led to her being targeted.

The deadly contest for the Amazulu throne was also laid bare by Buthelezi this week. He painted a gloomy picture, saying if it were not for the constitutional democracy that the country enjoys, a deadly war would have long ensued between the warring factions.

Amazulu royal house spokesperson Prince Thulani Zulu declined to comment, saying had taken leave from royal duties.

Buthelezi’s spokesperson, Liezl van der Merwe, said: “His Majesty the King met his sister yesterday and he subsequently issued a statement on the meeting, so I am not aware of your information. He is clearly working and healthy.”
