Scandal! star Sihle Ndaba has opened up about the challenges of playing a drug addict on the show.

The actress has won over the hearts of Mzansi with her role as Duduzile Kubeka, a member of the business-orientated Kubeka family who finds herself addicted to medication.

Sinhle said she was intent on telling Duduzile’s story as honestly and sensitively as possible.

“With every single character I just struggle with telling the story as honestly and as truthfully as possible because, at the end of the day, someone is going through what the character is going through.”

Sihle said paying the role of Duduzile made her grow compassion and perspective for people who work in the corporate world and suffer from addiction.

“It made me look at people in the corporate world so differently, because these are high-functioning beings who are constantly being put in high-stakes situations where they need to make decisions and still be parents, brothers and sisters.”

Sihle admitted that some of the scenes took a toll on her body and she looked to acupuncture to find relief and to debrief from the role.

“It was very hard, it was a hard journey and my body just took strain, so I went for acupuncture a few times just to release and debrief, because the stories are tough and they are real.”

Having scored the gig during the pandemic, Sihle says she relied on the internet and the experiences of some colleagues, friends and family members who have had a problem with addiction and mental health to research the character.

“As a black girl who has lived in a township, in Durban, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng, I saw there are a lot of misconceptions around why people take drugs and there’s a lot of judgment.

“Certain things that I found were: the root cause of it is most often mental illness, some sort of trauma, stress, anxiety or depression. You see a lot of people taking these different drugs. People don’t really understand that you have to question the ‘why’ more than anything else. You don’t treat the addiction, you treat the root cause.”

Sihle says she now hopes to use her passion project, the Sihle Ndaba foundation, to help spread awareness surrounding mental health and drug abuse.

Television actress Sihle Ndaba, wants the notion of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ to apply in Zinhle Mabena’s arrest drama.

This follows after Mabena was arrested last night at the Pretoria Central police station for allegedly conspiring to commit murder. The actress was accused of plotting to murder her estranged husband Robert Ngwenya.

Phil Mphela tweeted, “Mabena, known for playing Sihle on Isibaya, was arrested last night for an alleged conspiracy to murder her husband. The attempted murder incident took place in January, resulting in the death of the husband’s bodyguard.

But now she is a free woman as her case has been thrown out due to lack of evidence. “I act on behalf of Zinhle and confirm that she was unlawfully taken into custody yesterday but is now a free woman after the NPA declined to place the matter on the roll, because of the preposterous nature of the allegations against our client. We can also confirm that nothing plausible was provided to the authorities to link our client to any crime including but not limited to Murder or attempted murder or any conspiracy of sought,” Zinhle’s lawyer, Joshua Lazarus, said in a statement.

Rallying behind Zinhle as many have been expressing mixed reactions to this matter, Sihle publicly declared her support for Mabena. The actress commented on the statement Zinhle shared on her Instagram page and said: “You are loved” with heart emojis. The statement said Zinhle has been “subject to a lot of intimidation and scrutiny by an individual known to her and who has been trying to damage her reputation.”

A Twitter user weighed in on this and said a person is innocent until proven guilty and told people must be mindful of the information they consume because character assassination is rife

“Innocent until proven guilty. Be mindful of what information you accept. Character assassination is what people resort to when they can’t find anything bad about you.” Sihle replied to the tweet “Louder”

Mabena was facing two charges of murder and attempted murder. In January Robert was ambushed by gunmen who opened fire to his car and shot his bodyguard who died.

Zinhle told Daily Sun that what unfolded has left her traumatic and thanked everyone who rallied behind her.

“I cannot pretend and begin to explain how traumatic last night was for me to spend a night in police detention. I thank my family, close friends, and my legal team for their support and faith in my innocence despite the despicable and utter lies that are spreading against me.”
