DJ Sbu slapped with R15 million tax bill

Award-winning musician and media personality Sbusiso Arthur Leope has been slapped with a whopping R15-million tax bill by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The publication has learnt that SARS obtained a default judgment against the former Metro FM DJ, popularly known as DJ Sbu, at the Joburg High Court last week after he failed to pay the money.

According to court papers, which we have seen, Leope owed the taxman just under R5-million for personal income tax but the amount ballooned to over R14-million after more than R4.4-million additional tax and R4.7-million interest were added to the debt.

It appears that this is the second default judgment SARS has obtained against Leope, who coowns one of South Africa’s iconic record label TS Records with businessman-turned-politician Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza.

According to the papers, SARS obtained the first default judgment against Leope, the founder of popular energy drink Mo Faya, in 2018 after he failed to settle over R2.2-million in tax.

When the taxman applied for a default judgment against him, it pleaded with the court to withdraw the previous one and replace it with the one with the higher amount.

“In terms of the Tax Administration Act, the South African Revenue Service hereby withdraws the certified statement filed in respect of the above taxpayer. Kindly endorse both copies of this notice, amend the court record accordingly and return one copy as confirmation of the withdrawal to the address above,” reads the letter dated October 19.

Attempts to solicit a comment from Leope drew a blank as he ignored phone calls and failed to respond to the text message sent to him.

Leope’s tax woes come a few months after music duo Major League DJZ were hit with a R9-million tax bill, while Gang of Instrumental lead singer Tumi Masemola received a R1.4-million tax bill.

Other celebrities who found themselves on the wrong side of the law for not being tax compliant include Bonang Matheba, rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, and his boss Bobby Motaung, and actor Rapulana Seiphemo, among others.

Aubrey Moeng, the CEO of TTP Consulting, said SARS had been a thorn to many South Africans and musicians in particular, because of their inability to manage their tax affairs.

He said artists should submit their returns on time and if they were indebted to SARS, they had an option to object or appeal the tax outcome of the amount in question. “If they agree on the amount, they can request payment arrangement if they don’t have funds or apply for tax compromise. By doing this, they could avoid unnecessary penalties and judgments from SARS.”

Thabile Dlamini of Motolo Dlamini Financial and Assurance Services, advised artists to deduct provisional tax amounts from royalties-collecting societies or music promoters; sponsorships or endorsements and invest them.

“This is important so that they could use some of those savings

to pay their tax bills when the tax season arrives,” she said.

She also said SARS should consider working with tax practitioners and music industry stakeholders to conduct tax workshops to educate artists or people in the creative industry about tax compliance.

“When everybody is tax compliant, there would be no need for SARS to obtain a judgment against them or even attach their assets,” added Dlamini.

Leope did not respond to several attempts for comment.

Afro Soul to continue as a duo after death of founding member

Award-wining roup Afro Soul will not fill up the position of their late member Sergeant Malishe, who died in July.

The two surviving members of the trio, Sabelo Ngema and Thandeka Zulu, have confirmed that going forward, they will work as a duo.

They said they would not complete the unfinished songs they had already recorded when Sergeant was still alive.

Instead, they were planning to finish their new album as a duo.

Sabelo told Sun Buzz fans had been asking them if they would fill up Sergeant’s position and continue as a trio.

“We decided not to fill up his position to become a trio. But from now on, we will continue as a duo.

“It is difficult to get a new member who is older and start teaching them new things.

“We have learnt that when we were struggling to fill up late Thandeka’s position. We tried many different people until we got Thandeka in the end,” he said.

Since Afro Soul was established in 2005 by Sabelo, Joocy and the late Thandeka, it branded itself as a trio.

When Joocy left the group to be a solo artist, the remaining members replaced him with the late Sergeant. And when Thandeka died, they replaced her with Thandeka Zulu.

Sabelo said they were about to finish their new album, in which Sergeant’s voice would not be heard although they had a few unfinished songs they had recorded with him.

“We recorded a few songs, but they were unfinished because he died. On this upcoming project, his voice will not be heard but we will honour him.

“Featuring Sergeant’s voice on our new project when he is no more will give us a hard time when we have to perform our new songs live, where he will not be a part of us on stage,” he said.

Sabelo added that from now on, people would see the group performing as a duo.

He also said their new album would be released next month.

Kylie Jenner is “so excited” to welcome her second child. The 24-year-old reality star is currently pregnant with her second child with rapper Travis Scott, and sources have said she is “doing really well” and can’t wait to welcome a little brother or sister for her three-year-old daughter Stormi.

Sources also said Kylie is busy decorating the nursery for her impending arrival, and is planning on having a baby shower in December. The insider told People magazine: “[Kylie is] doing really well and is so excited about the baby. [She is] having fun decorating a nursery and getting ready for the baby.

“She and Travis are doing great too. They spend as much time with Stormi as they can. Kylie is convinced that she will be the best big sister. Later in Kylie’s Instagram post, she was seen cradling her growing baby bump and celebrating the news with the rest of her family.

Former inmate Morwesi Theledi who spent 6 years in jail opens up on her life & new role on Muvhango

Former inmate Morwesi Theledi used her six years in jail to make positive life choices.

After serving six years in prison for fraud, the new addition to SABC2 soapie Muvhango, Morwesi Theledi, says being locked up was a blessing in disguise.

At just 25, Theledi was a well-established supervisor at a bank in Southgate Mall, driving her own car and living away from home. However, her life took a turn when she found herself lured into a bank scamming syndicate that would see her spend the next six years of her life in jail serving a decade-long sentence.

“My 10-year sentence was a blessing in disguise to me. When I get asked about the positive side of prison, I lighten up because in prison you are locked up for 17 hours. You use that time for introspection. I used that time to empower myself and took up programmes to positively transform my life to become the woman I am today. I even have titles now; I am a businesswoman and an actress on Muvhango,” Theledi said.

After graduating with a journalism qualification from Damelin College, she landed a job as a bank teller in 2003. She worked her way up the ranks and became a supervisor within five years. With her management post came perks such as a good income and access to the bank’s wealthiest accounts.

At the time, the mother of one developed a relationship with one of her clients, who often bought her gifts, made regular deposits into her accounts and gave her tips amounting to R6 000 in clothing vouchers.

“I was approached by some client. I didn’t know that they were a syndicate. In the banking industry, you create relationships with customers because you don’t want your customers to branch out and bank with other banks. You trust your customers and don’t think that they will turn on you the next day and start making requests. Even if a customer leaves you a tip, you never think that it will be used against you the next day,” she said.

It was in 2008 when Theledi’s client made a request for her to deposit R2.7 million from an account belonging to a blue chip company into a private one.

In a state of panic, she tried to freeze the account by transferring R27 million instead. The bank’s forensics were alerted and she was arrested and kept at Mondeor Police Station.

The young mother said she had been threatened and told that her four-year-old son would be harmed if she told the police about the syndicate.

“They threatened me. Lives were at stake and I chose to lie.”

While awaiting trial, Theledi found out that she was pregnant with her second child and chose to stay with her newborn in prison until he was two years old. During this time, she planned her life after prison.

“What I loved about prison was that it gave me an opportunity to bond with my child. I also had a plan that, should it happen that I was found guilty, I’d do things that would make me come out better. The first thing I did was to enrol with Unisa. At the same time, I enrolled for a business management course with the University of Johannesburg and I graduated in prison.”

The young mother was depressed during the first few months of her incarceration. After seeing a psychologist, she decided to take an active stand and became the face of an education and faith-based organisation called Pillar to Post.

“As the face of the prison with Pillar to Post, schoolkids would enter the prison and we would give them a tour and tell them my story on how I landed in prison and warn them about the dangers of prison,” she recalled.

At the same time, she tapped into her acting talent by writing a play that, through an initiative set up by the department of sports, arts and culture, was featured at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in 2016. The play won her a best actress award. She was released from prison in the same year and has been rebuilding her life ever since.

Life out of prison is proving to be kind to Theledi, who is also the founder and chief executive of Ugqozi Solutions, which helps banks and companies handle matters of fraud.

She is also a motivational speaker and believes that her new role on TV will help inspire young women with the possibilities of second chances.

Muvhango gave me a second chance. We struggle as ex-offenders to get a job. We get judged. I used to apply for jobs and I was told that they like me, but I have a criminal record. It used to depress me until I decided to just stop. I am thankful to everyone who welcomed me at Muvhango with so much warmth

Theledi’s character, Mantwa, a kidnapper and cousin of James Motsamai (played by Dingaan Mokebe KaKhumalo), made her first appearance on Tuesday to millions of SABC viewers, an opportunity she says would never have happened if she had not gone to prison.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams shot in the stomach by wife

Former Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams shot in the stomach by wife

Former Bafana Bafana striker Mark Williams was allegedly shot in the stomach with a stun gun by his then wife in one of their domestic violence bouts that were covered in a veil of secrecy.

The footballer’s wife also allegedly broke into his house after she had moved out following their separation and vandalised his belongings before pouring copious amounts of alcohol on his bedding.

The shocking incidents, which occurred around 2006, came to the fore last week after a fresh fight broke out between the two over a Bryanston property that she wanted to auction off to the highest bidder and leave the footie, and his new family, homeless.

Speaking to Sunday World on condition of anonymity, a close friend of Mark and his ex said the Supersport soccer commentator briefed his lawyers last week to obtain a court order to stop Branca from selling his posh pad.

The friend said Mark and his ex entered into a verbal settlement agreement on how they would divide their multimillion-rand estate after their acrimonious divorce in 2008.

According to the settlement agreement, said the friend,

the two were to receive over R1.2-million each in cash from their joint account.

The former Kaizer Chiefs marksman was to keep the Bryanston house, which was then valued at about R3-million while she was to occupy their Merlose Arch home, which was also worth about R3-million.

The friend said she sold the Melrose property in 2009 and pocketed the proceeds of the sale.

“This because this was her property as agreed in the settlement, hence she did not share the proceeds with Mark and also because he did not ask for a cent from it,” said the friend.

Mark, said the friend, got the shock of his life on October 20 last year when he received a letter from the sheriff that his Bryanston home would be auctioned off to the highest bidder and that the two should share the profit generated from its sale.

The friend further said Mark was shocked that she would do this to him because he had not defaulted on the maintenance of their child.

“When he enquired why she was selling the property, he said she told him that the City of Joburg’s rates and tax account was in arrears that have a potential to negatively affect her credit record if they take legal action as the account was still in the names of both of them,” said the friend.

The pal said Williams admitted that the account was once over R300 000 in arrears but had since reduced it to just over R33 000 with the income he received as an analyst.

The friend added that the two drifted apart after she broke into Mark’s house on April 20 2006 and damaged a new plasma television set, a new computer, a fax machine, toaster and kettle, and poured wine all over his private belongings before tearing up his bedding.

He said on July 20 2006, she shot him with a stun gun in the stomach and then fired another shot at him, which missed and lodged itself into the hard plastic part of the door of his vehicle.

When contacted, Williams confirmed that his ex had applied for a court order to auction off his house.

“She is greedy man. We had a settlement agreement for her to keep the Melrose Arch house, but she sold it and now she wants to sell mine because suddenly she said she was not aware of the agreement.

“The property she sold was not the only one she kept, I had eight properties and she took 80% of those properties and I kept a few because I’m a good person. This woman abused me physically and financially. I’m going to fight her in court, she is not going to sell this one because I have a family to protect,” he said.

Williams also confirmed that she had shot him in the stomach and also vandalised his property. When contacted, she refused to comment.

She told him the Joburg rates and taxes account was in arrears

Actors Menzi (Muzi Mthabela) and Fikile (Phindile Gwala) leave Imbewu: The Seed – Here's why

Actors Muzi Mthabela and Phindile Gwala-Ngandu have left Durban-based e.tv soapie Imbewu: The Seed.

The former Isibaya actor, who plays the role of Menzi in the weekly soapie, asked to be excused from the show, while Gwala-Ngandu, who portrays the character of Fikile, was allegedly dropped by the producers.

Sources close to Mthabela say that the actor, who is known for his role as Duma on the now canned Mzansi Magic soapie Isibaya, decided to leave Imbewu: The Seed because he was “becoming increasingly frustrated with his Casanova role, which was not sitting well with his personal life, as he is a devoted Christian church member and is married”.

The source said:
He was tired of this role, [which sees his character] changing women all the time when he is a God-fearing man in real life. When he joined Imbewu: The Seed, he was not aware of the turns his character would take as a womaniser.

The actor was allegedly tipped for a role on popular SABC1 soapie Generations: The Legacy on his return to Johannesburg, but he told City Press that his move to the show had not worked out as he had hoped.

“I did audition for Generations: The Legacy, but they took someone else,” Mthabela said.

He added that he was not leaving Imbewu: The Seed on a sour note.

“I am leaving the show, that part is true. I have not renewed my contract for next year because I have to go back to Johannesburg to be with my children.

“I had an agreement with my wife that we would give Imbewu: The Seed a try for a year to see how it would be for us as a family.”

About Gwala-Ngandu, the source said: “Phindile’s role will be taken off due to what the producers are saying to be weak acting skills. The new producers were not very impressed, so they did not want to keep her.”

Gwala-Ngandu, who broke into the industry through her popular role as receptionist Nonny on SABC2 soapie Muvhango, asked for questions to be sent to her, but had not replied by the time of going to print.

Imbewu: The Seed spokesperson Thapelo Ramatsui confirmed that the two actors would exit the soapie, but said it would be for a short time.

“They are on a hiatus from the show … They want to explore other avenues, such as other work opportunities. Durban is quite a stretch, so if they want to pursue other interests in Johannesburg, we give them leeway to pursue other projects and possibly come back. We did not fire anyone,” Ramatsui said.
