Musician Simphiwe Dana has defended Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung for putting journalists on blast.

It all started when Julia Madibogo of City Press approached the “Idols SA” judge for comment on allegations that he was divorcing his husband, Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo.

Responding via text to the request for comment, Somizi said: “Please make my year and write the story as I will sue the living hell out of you and your publication for this crap you are asking me….get your facts right or go join Sunday World”.

He then took a screengrab of the text and posted it on his Instagram account saying “So @city_press has become a tabloid…okay…two can play that game…”, he then went on to ask his followers to dial the journalist’s number.

Somizi also took aim at an editor at Sunday World, Kabelo Khumalo.

The “Somizi and Mohale: The Union“ star was approached for comment after allegations that production on his cooking show, ”Dinner at Somizi’s“, has been put on hold amidst legal proceedings instituted by Hastings Moeng.

Taking to Twitter, Simphiwe said that she felt Somizi was not wrong in his response.

“I don’t think Somizi is wrong. There are boundaries. Respect them. Us being public figures doesn’t create grounds for uba wena usiqhele. Otherwise write your story ungasifaki”, she tweeted.

When a tweep asked Simphiwe if she had seen that Somizi referred to a journalist as an“‘abortion survivor”, she suggested that it was done so within reason.

“I didn’t see this one. And it’s completely out of line. It would be good to know what led to it”, she replied.

Award-winning musician Simphiwe Dana has expressed her concern that South African leaders are taking an “‘authoritarian tone” with the nation, warning that it may be the early signs of a dictatorship.

Dana, like many others across the globe, has been watching politicians speak over the last few weeks on the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

After Julius Malema’s fiery address to the nation on Thursday, Simphiwe took to Twitter to share her worry that leaders are becoming more and more authoritarian.

“I’m getting increasingly concerned with the authoritarian tone our leaders are taking with us. And the authoritarian ways they’re adopting. These are the early signs of a dictatorship. I’m saying this because we pride ourselves in the way SA governs,” she tweeted.

She added her concern that soon “men with big guns” may show up at our door if we disagree with our leaders.

“I worry that soon we won’t be able to disagree with our leadership without men with big guns showing up on our doorsteps and our own people cheering them on. I hope to God I’m wrong. This pandemic is exposing a lot of ish.”

When a Twitter user said president Cyril Ramaphosa was an example of what Simphiwe was talking about, she included Malema and police minister Bheki Cele.

The Masibambaneni hitmaker had earlier applauded the government for enforcing the alcohol ban but also called for a ban on gender-based violence.

“Our police minister arrested 20 000 people in two weeks for drinking during an alcohol ban. This is commendable as y’all should not be breaking laws. How I wish this was 20 000 arrested during a GBV ban, in two weeks.”

Without precedent for some time, I can cover tabs. You don’t have the foggiest idea what it intends to me. South Africa, improve by your specialists! This is so humiliating,” Simphiwe tweeted.

I’m stating this since I’ve not had the option to cover my tabs. I comprehend I’m a higher level craftsman! I’m simply frightened for the ones! Furthermore, Whether they’re alright. I believe I’m conversing with my administration now and requesting them to be kinder to us. We work, we don’t merit this!

The songstress, who recognized herself as a “higher level craftsman”, clarified that her tirade was roused by the battles she persevered through this year.

Simphiwe said she was getting down on government since she felt it had “corrupted” her notwithstanding the quality music she has delivered during a lifelong that traverses over 15 years.

The way that I’m an entire IT craftsman and general scholar and you spoil me like this. After all the quality music I’ve given you.

The songstress additionally got down on the pastor’s “futile representative”, whom she stated, “just despises everybody”.

A then he got that pointless representative who just loathes everybody. I actually adored him through it all. I’m currently done! I trust he realizes that even this activity is a demonstration of affection!

This isn’t the first run through the artist has had solid words for the division.

In May this year during lockdown level 5, Simphiwe took to Twitter to draw in with the division, saying she was at this point to get a reaction to her application for help as a craftsman, 70 days after her underlying application.

“It’s been more than 70 days since lockdown, I haven’t gotten a reaction to my Covid-19 proposition. Might you be able to refresh us on what the hold up is?” she asked at that point.

Their association finished genially after the priest answered to her tweets and vowed to make sure that the honor winning hitmaker got help.

When lockdown started, Nathi convened a sector meeting with the entertainers and they discussed issues they could possibly face as a result of the lockdown.

Minister Nathi announced that he would be allocating R150 million to the sector to provide much-needed relief. Since events were postponed, they will create programs such as live streams, to make sure that artists entertain their legions of fans during the lockdown period.

Many artists applied for the COVID-19 relief fund but many were not approved and were forced to find other means to survive.

Simphiwe Dana has never shied away from expressing her views on social media and making people catch the heat. This time Nathi and his spokeswoman were on the firing line and Dana gave it to them straight.

“I’m finally understanding we have a useless minister of arts and culture! I tried, because I love him, and I love you! But I owe you the truth. I know what this means for me in government. I still wish they will be kind.”

Simphiwe, as the breadwinner said she can now finally pay for her bills after suffering months of not being able to organise gigs.

“I’m saying this because I’ve not been able to pay my bills. I understand I’m a higher tier artist! I’m just scared for the ones! And Whether they’re ok. I think I’m talking to my government at this point and asking for them to be kinder to us. We work, we don’t deserve this!”

“And then he got that useless spokesperson who just hates everyone. And I still loved him through it all. I’m now done! I hope he knows that even this action is an act of love!”

Veteran actress Linda Sebezo shocked many when she revealed that she had to survive off of her mother’s pension money for bread.

“I just received an email that my application to the Basa relief fund has been declined because they have reached capacity. I ask again, sizolithaphi ke usizo?…I have to rely on my mother’s pension to put food on the table, such a sad reality,” she said in a Facebook post

“On the other hand I had to pay fees for my daughter who attends a private institution and I didn’t have money to pay for her then.

“I work hard every month to raise R40 000 to pay my bond, car, and school fees. All of a sudden everything got stuck. My heart was very heavy when I saw my mom buying bread for us,” she opened up.

The news did not shake the country, nor did she experience as much backlash for her revelation as we believe she thought she was going to experience too. In the past, coming out was scary and threatened to end your career. This is the generation that the legendary musician comes from. However, by the time that the “Bamako” musician came out, the country already had female examples like Brenda Fassie and Thandiswa Mazwai that showcased in lived experience what s.e.xual fluidity and being queer is.

So this might be the reason that even when Simphiwe posted the latest image of her fiancé, she was met with messages of appreciation and acceptance. Or the reason for the warm reception could be because tweeps know that the musician is always ready to fire back. However, in the latest post, we get to see the unnamed woman that has capture Simphiwe’s heart taking a young skinny dip in the family pool. Of course, Simphiwe managed to keep it PG, but the real question is what her situation behind the lens was?
