‘I don’t listen to anybody’s opinion about my life’ – Shona Ferguson opens up on past struggles

He runs one of the most successful production companies in South Africa.

Shona Ferguson (49) and wife Connie Ferguson (51) launched Ferguson films in 2010 and they have brought the country productions such as The Queen, Rockville, iGazi, The Throne, The Herd, and Kings of Jo’burg, to name a few.

They also run The Ferguson Foundation, dedicated to empowering and supporting disadvantaged individuals in business, education, film, and ultimately building industry leaders.

But their journey from actors to being directors, producers, and company owners has not been easy.

Shona took to social media to share details on the fulfilling yet challenging journey to victory and how many people did not think he would ever triumph.

“A moment of reflection and gratitude: 17 years ago a Hollywood producer asked me if I had a backup plan. I was obviously shattered because I had just done multiple takes of an audition. He continued to say, You don’t have what it takes,” Shona writes.

“An agent told me it wasn’t going to be easy to get me jobs because I didn’t have the right “look”. A veteran actor loved and respected by millions told me I am not memorable and so did a lot of producers. Many actors criticized me and made bets I would never make it in this industry.”

In 2010, he was eavesdropping on a couple of fellow actors saying he was overrated and didn’t have real talent.

“The insults got very personal. Anyway. I don’t hold grudges the same way I don’t listen to anybody’s opinion about my life. I’ve given most of these folks, agents and naysayers work opportunities regardless. Some are on my payroll and some would rather starve than work for me and that’s ok. I’m not for everyone and not everyone is for me.”

Shona says there was a time in his life he couldn’t afford toothpaste and brushed his teeth with sunlight bar soap.

“We had bogobe le (pap) and cabbage for years because I couldn’t afford meat. We were so broke; we couldn’t afford paraffin for the lamps. We didn’t have much, but God was with us. We prayed day and night. The prayers haven’t stopped. Thank you, mom and dad. Thank you, Jesus. It’s the darkest times and toughest battles that make us strong. There’s no human being on this planet that can break my spirit because you did not build me. God did,” he adds.

Showing gratitude to God, Shona says, “I am what and who God says I am. Blessed. This is in no way saying life is perfect. No! The weapon will be formed but it will not prosper. The enemy schemes every day so you have to pray harder & harder. You have to see every challenge & set back as a lesson.”

He adds that every day, he learns more from failures than his successes.

“With every level of success comes new devils so u can never stop praying and feeding your soul with positivity, love, and gratitude. We are not at war with the flesh anymore or strangers’ opinions on social media, as many believe.”

I don’t care who you are – Shona Ferguson’s powerful message leaves Fans speechless

Shona Ferguson is not about the life of mizing the wrongdoings of others. He dished some words of wisdom where he advises people to call each other out when the other does something wrong.

In a lengthy video on Instagram, Shona says:

“As black people, we never hold each other accountable, it has become so easy for us to blame someone for something. We allow certain things to happen within ourselves and our circles that we shouldn’t. The first thing we never call each other out when we brutally and blatantly go out of our way to pull down and destroy another successful person.”

“I made it a point that if you are going to be in my circle, you are negative and you are toxic. I’m going to cut you out I don’t care who you are. I’m not going to have regrets about it. If you are negative and toxic in my circle you are gone. It’s simple”

Shona has had his fair share of negativity and hate together with him and his wife. They were once accused of dismissing actors without proper notices, leading others to think they are the industry vultures others warn each other about.

Shona received a lot of flack for casting the same faces on his productions. Speaking to Tswalebs, he said the term open up the industry is very insulting to actors.

“The term “recycling actors” is very insulting to actors in our industry. Actors act. That’s what they do for a living. Saying because they’ve been on 1 project they should be cast away and someone new must be cast is unfair. I have never cared for this particular phrase “open up the industry” because it’s what we do every day of our lives.

“We give hundreds of actors work opportunities every single year, we give long term work to loyal hard-working actors and crew, so “Open Up the industry” is, unfortunately, a statement that is misused by bullies to tear others down. The number one rule to getting anything worthwhile done is to never get distracted by misinformed opinions. The industry IS open. You are just not doing enough to get the attention of casting directors. Complaining will never get any door open for you. Hard work and perseverance definitely will,” explains Shona

After leaving viewers glued to their small screens with its first season and begging for more, Kings of Joburg fans will be excited to find out that their favorite series has been renewed for a second season.

The exciting news was shared by Shona Ferguson on social media, after he shared a hilarious video on his Instagram page, where his daughter Alicia Ferguson was accusing him of farting.

Shona was sitting inside his car and Alicia was in Connie Ferguson’s car, the family was arguing about Shona who apparently farted but he kept on defending himself. The Kings of Joburg producer then decided to share the exciting news saying the series is returning.
The 6-episode series follows the exploits of the two Masire brothers, who are involved in organized crime. They are the titular ‘kings’, and the show explores themes of family structures, loyalty, crime, and African masculinity. There are also elements of the supernatural and the occult. Connie Ferguson plays a role as a mermaid in this one.

The series features a star-studded cast such as Abdul Khoza, Zolisa Xaluva, Buhle Samuels, TK Sebothoma, and SK Khoza to name a few. Shona said Kings of Joburg was inspired by the folk tales his father used to tell him when he was growing up.

“These stories kept me up at night and gave me nightmares but I had to bring them to life in a tale of human conflict. Audiences will be surprised to learn that despite the darkness of this story, Kings of Joburg, paints a beautiful picture of the city of Johannesburg. I am also grateful to have worked with such an amazing cast and crew who gave it their all and helped bring my vision to life,” he explained.
