Here’s why Rhythm City was cancelled

The show’s last episode ever aired on the 19th of July 2021. Many South Africans could not believe it. The majority of us grew up watching Rhythm City; we honestly thought it was here to stay. It was such a slap in the face when the show got canceled out of nowhere. Almost every South African can testify to this when I say the standard procedure had always been Skeem Saam, Rhythm City, Scandal, and then Generations.

Rhythm City was more than a soapie to South Africans; it was a mandatory and prominent part of their lifestyle. Their first ever episode aired on 9 July 2007, and this came to be after the show replaced etv’s first-ever weeknight soapie, Backstage.

Reasons behind Rhythm City’s end
The Rhythm City cast admitted that they were called to do a basic gathering and thought they would be congratulated for their perseverance through covid 19 or something along those lines but instead, they got axed. They had no idea. Imagine going to a work “Christmas party” only to find out it’s a retrenchment fest not just for the ones on the basic level but everyone! Hectic!

ETV never explicitly mentioned any financial reasons for Rhythm City’s cancellation except for the fact that the show just wasn’t profitable for the channel any longer. They didn’t want to get into details because cancelling the show didn’t make sense, as Rhythm City had 5.2 million viewers in 2020 and was among the country’s ten most-watched soapies. Not only that, Rhythm City was the second most-watched show on the etv channel behind Scandal.

We have established that the channel’s decision to cancel Rhythm was not because it was making a loss or because of profits but because of some personal reasons perhaps conflict with the producers?

The actors said that it didn’t make sense to cut the show from the channel because it is Rhythm City after all, and it’s been there for years. How come, all of a sudden, it is being scrapped? A source added that after they told the cast this bad news unexpectedly, you could see everyone was worried. Everyone had a “where will I go now” face. It is pretty sad.

Rhythm City has been replaced by a fashion series called House of Zwide.

E.tv’s Rhythm City is promising viewers a happy ending.

The soapie is coming to an end on Friday, 16 July, after 14 successful years.

The channel said people will be surprised to see how the show will end.

“Rhythm City says goodbye to its loyal fans with an ending South Africa never expected. The show, which started on 9 July 2007, will have aired a total number of 3660 episodes by the 16th,” said e.tv.

It said people such as Fats (Mpho Molepo), Jafta (Sandile Dlamini), Sabelo (Ishmael Songo) and Sindiswa (Mbali Zakwe) will get their happily every after. However, a different fate awaits Khulekani (Mncedisi Shabangu).

“This week will showcase a tale with beautiful endings, from Jafta and Fats finally finding the love of their lives, to Sabelo and Sindiswa moving into their own home, and Suffocate ending up sharing a prison cell with Khulekani.”

It also thanked viewers for a great 14 years.

“Rhythm City had a stellar cast over the years, portraying storylines that mirrored the very reality South Africans go through, whilst showcasing some of the greatest musical talents this country has to offer. The show has amassed over four million viewers daily in its tenure, and for that, we’d like to say Dankie Mzansi for 14 years.”

The soapie will be replaced by fashion drama series House of Zwide with a stellar cast of actors like Vusi Kunene, Winnie Ntshaba, Motlatsi Mafatshe, Jeffrey Sekele, Matshepo Maleme and Khaya Dladla and debuts on Monday, 19 July, at 6.30pm.

The competition she was referring to was the SABC 1 reality competition “When I first heard Jesse… I was like ‘yoh!’, I’m not a hip-hop person but I have this thing about talent, I can spot talent anywhere and I have always wanted him to break into the music industry,” explained Khumalo.

Nontulikazi Nxumalo regrets giving a mum and her son a helping hand. The 54-year-old, who plays a leading role in e.tv soapie Rhythm City, said it all started when a Facebook friend died in February.

She said in the months before her friend Dante Vries died, he told her about his girlfriend and said he’d like them to meet.

“I never met Dante, but our friendship was great. We spoke about everything and he was like a brother to me,” she said.

Nontulikazi said Dante paid rent for this woman and her 25-year-old son, but they were evicted when he died.

“I didn’t hesitate to let them move into my restaurant, which was temporarily closed in March.”

The woman wouldn’t say much about her family and claimed they were all dead.

She said when she told the woman to start looking for a job and
accommodation, she told her she was sick and couldn’t work.

“In June I told her to please get a place because the restaurant was supposed to be a temporary solution,” she said.

Nontulikazi said when they wouldn’t leave she called the cops, but they said there was nothing they could do because she’d allowed the woman and her son to move in.

“No one is able to help them and their story of not having family isn’t adding up.

They also don’t have IDs,” she said.

Nontulikazi said she was starting to wonder whether Dante was a real person or if this woman catfished her.

The woman, Olivia Langeveldt (49), said she was abandoned by her mum when she was three months old and her foster parents died when she was two.

She said Dante took her in and paid her rent before he moved to the UK. Asked when she’d leave, she said she didn’t know.

Police spokesman Captain Mavela Masondo said it was illegal to evict people because of lockdown regulations. He advised Nontulikazi to find them space at a shelter as she could approach police again.
