EFF leader Julius Malema’s trip to Nkandla on Friday was to persuade former president Jacob Zuma that cooperating with the Zondo commission would strengthen the fight against President Cyril Ramaphosa, a concerted battle that the red berets would gladly join.

It was also to tell Zuma that boycotting the commission would fuel a media-led public onslaught against him, whereas appearing at the hearing would help expose commission chairperson Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s bias. Malema and fellow EFF leaders also have grievances against the commission, whose investigators have been scrutinising his bank accounts and those of people close to him.

Zuma has vowed to ignore a Constitutional Court order that he abide by the commission’s summonses for him to appear, saying he does not fear being imprisoned for his defiance.

Malema was accompanied by fellow EFF leader Dali Mpofu and party spokesperson Vuyani Pambo. Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina and ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Tony Yengeni, both Zuma loyalists and fierce Ramaphosa critics, were also present. A meeting with ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule is said to be in the pipeline.

Tony Yengeni, Julius Malema, staff member, Jacob Zuma, chef, Mzwandile Masina, Dali Mpofu and Vuyani Pambo have tea and eat roast lamb at the former president’s homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

Ramaphosa’s foes are looking to exploit pockets of dissatisfaction across government, the security forces and the ANC against the president, and are hoping to use Zuma’s stand-off with the Zondo commission as a lightning rod for their mobilisation.

THE TEA PARTY GRAND PLAN

At the meeting, Malema was expected to advise Zuma to change his mind about snubbing the commission. The argument was that such a move created a fertile environment for the media to launch an onslaught against him. However, if he did appear before Zondo, that would pave the way for a campaign focused on Zondo’s alleged bias and mismanagement of the commission.

Malema’s pitch to Zuma, which was canvassed among EFF leaders and also has the buy-in of certain ANC leaders, is premised on the belief that it will take some time for the Zondo Commission to complete its report and hand it over to Ramaphosa and Parliament.

“By the time this process is complete, according to this thinking, Ramaphosa would be politically weak in the ANC because of [his adversaries”] mobilisation, and [would be] unable to fully act on the commission’s recommendations. The main plan is for all progressive forces to fight from one side,” said a Zuma lobbyist.

Another Zuma loyalist described the move as the creation of “a broad alliance”.

As part of the fight-back plan, Parliament would also become a battleground, where the EFF would be expected to participate in the motion of no confidence against Ramaphosa. In addition, the EFF would use its platforms to focus on Ramaphosa’s flaws and mistakes in government.

BANKING ON DIVIDED SECURITY FORCES

Sources have revealed that Zuma’s allies believe Ramaphosa does not have a firm grip on the security cluster and that could be used to garner support on the grounds that the current government administration is ineffective.

“The State Security Agency is divided and there’s a lot of unhappiness about the way the agency’s operational secrets have been paraded in public at the state capture commission, with Ramaphosa’s approval,’ said a senior figure in the security cluster.

Another area of weakness is said to be the struggles within the SA Police Service’s higher echelons, where national commissioner Khehla Sitole has suspended members of the top brass.

An ANC-aligned retired military figure said senior officials within the SA National Defence Force were furious that Ramaphosa had ‘thrown them under the bus’ by government’s handling of the army’s procurement of the Interferon cancer drug from Cuba. Medical experts in the defence force had identified this as a possible immune-booster against Covid-19.

“They believe government should be in a position to tell the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority [Sahpra] to approve the use of Interferon among army members. If Sahpra can approve Ivermectin, which is an animal drug, what’s the difficulty with approving a cancer drug that’s been scientifically proven to work? It’s also not claimed to be a [Covid-19] cure.”

A senior army official said the propaganda against Interferon was driven by ideological hatred towards Cuba and possibly the economic interests of pharmaceutical companies with links to Ramaphosa.

“And we should remember Nelson Mandela’s words that no one should choose for us who our friends should be,” said the official.

THE ACE FACTOR

Ace must contest because he has nothing to lose. He’s been treated unjustly, with state institutions being used against him. He must fight with everything he has, otherwise he’ll end up like John Block

As part of the offensive against Ramaphosa, there is a “national strategy” to defend Magashule, who is facing fraud and corruption charges, and is under pressure to step aside from the party, pending a criminal trial.

Plans are now under way to deploy so-called radical economic transformation forces on the ground to mobilise support for Magashule among not only ANC members, but also the general public. An ambitious part of the plan is to tout Magashule as a future candidate for the ANC presidency and to do so openly and defiantly, since the campaign season has yet to be sanctioned by the NEC.

“Ace must contest because he has nothing to lose. He’s been treated unjustly, with state institutions being used against him. He must fight with everything he has, otherwise he’ll end up like John Block,” said a close ally, referring to the former Northern Cape ANC chairperson who was jailed for corruption in 2018.

The strategy to undermine Ramaphosa included a drive to always have Magashule visible at public occasions such as funerals and commemorations. The fight would also be taken to Ramaphosa’s doorstep through a planned million-person march of the unemployed to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The ANC’s women, youth, students and school pupils would be mobilised.

RAMAPHOSA BACKERS ‘WEARING HIGH HEELS’

The anti-Ramaphosa group acknowledged that, while the president had better financial muscle, they were confident that they had better representation on the ground. The growth of ANC membership from 989 000 to 1.4 million under Magashule was expected to be used as a mobilising factor. “He won by a margin of 175 votes in Nasrec. He has no presence even on Facebook and Twitter – where Tito Mboweni is fighting alone. Many of Ramaphosa’s lobbyists are wearing high heels and are not on the ground,” said a source.

Another part of the strategy was to closely observe the way the Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) were treating criminal cases of people aligned to Ramaphosa.
“Where evidence of political interference is obtained, charges would be lodged against the most senior Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority officials for manipulating the justice system,” said the source.

“We’re saying there’s interference in the work of the criminal justice system by the current regime. All those serving as Ramaphosa’s proxies must know that they have only one year left in office.”

DRIVE TO SEIZE PROVINCES

Zuma’s lobbyists are also working around the clock to secure an ANC election victory for his backers in North West and Mpumalanga, where provincial conferences to elect new leadership have long been pending, but were postponed on several occasions due to lockdown.

Supra Mahumapelo remains the key man for Zuma in North West.

“If he wins the North West, then we can look at pushing him for a position at national level in the next national conference, but for now he’s the only one we have in that province,” said the source.

In Mpumalanga, described by a Zuma lobbyist as ‘solid’, acting ANC chairperson Mandla Ndlovu has been mentioned as a favourite candidate for the Zuma group.

In KwaZulu-Natal, popular corruption accused former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede is expected to champion Zuma’s interests.

“And the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is focused on pushing for unity among its ranks to ensure that, at the next national conference, they don’t lose out again on a top six position, as happened at Nasrec due to divisions,” said the source.

However, the strongly pro-Ramaphosa Eastern Cape has been difficult to penetrate since Zuma’s key lobbyist there, Andile Lungisa, faces criminal charges and jail.

“BRIAN MOLEFE’S TESTIMONY NOW A WEAPON

Last month, Limpopo ANC member Ernest Netshivhumbe filed a corruption complaint with the police against Ramaphosa and mining giant Glencore. This came after Molefe’s statement that the then deputy president aided the company in which he had previously had an interest.

“Mr Molefe testified that Mr Ramaphosa, while the de facto chairperson of Eskom, unduly used his political influence to his personal benefit and, by extension, to the financial benefit of Glencore by pressurising Eskom officials to write off a R1 billion debt owed to Eskom, resulting in Eskom incurring a financial loss of R1 billion and Glencore’s unjustified enrichment,” he wrote.

Netshivhumbe said this week that “the police in Makhado refused to open the case against a fellow Venda president”, but he had eventually got assistance from the provincial Serious Organised Crime Investigation office of the Hawks.

He said he had since learnt that the Hawks had escalated the complaint to the investigative arm of the NPA. He had then heard from a ‘general’- whom he refused to name – that the case would not be entertained, said Netshivhumbe.

“This is a war for accountability and what you do on the left you must also do on the right, so Cyril must also be held accountable,” he said.

EFF leader Julius Malema has arrived at Nkandla to meet with former president Jacob Zuma.

Malema is meeting Zuma over tea on Friday at the former president’s multimillion-rand Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

He arrived by helicopter in the company of advocate Dali Mpofu, national chairperson of the EFF.

It is not yet clear what the pair are expected to discuss but it has been speculated Malema will try to convince Zuma to appear before the state capture inquiry.

The meeting comes after Zuma announced he would defy a Constitutional Court order by refusing to appear before the inquiry.

It is also understood the two will come out of the meeting after smoking a peace pipe following years of bitter political rivalry that saw Malema fired from the ANC, only to form the EFF, a move that catapulted him to parliament where he became a thorn in Zuma’s side.

Julius Malema willing to be the first one to get COVID-19 vaccine

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema said he was willing to be the first one in the queue when COVID-19 vaccines finally become available in South Africa.

Malema was speaking at the EFF’s first media briefing for the year, where he called on South Africans to not fight science and warned the war against the pandemic is lost if the medicine is treated like the enemy.

He rubbished conspiracy theories that the intention of the vaccine is to kill black people, saying it would be administered to all races and that if there was anything untoward, those entrusted with administrating it would raise the alarm.

The country is set to receive the first 1.5 million doses of the vaccine this month from the Serum Institute of India, which the Department of Health said would be for health workers.

Malema said it was South Africa’s inability to develop pharmaceutical capacity that had left it vulnerable in the face of the global pandemic.

And we’re further endangered by conspiracy theories that vaccines are being developed to kill black people.

“It is practically impossible for a vaccine to be given to black people alone and kill them. We’re eating the same medicine that white people eat. If it is going to kill us, then they’re going to kill their own people as well.”

He said he was willing to put his money where his mouth is and be the first to take the jab, adding the battle against COVID would not be won without science.

“It is not going to work that one. Now it is the science that must be applied.”

He’s also cautioned his own members against spreading what he termed non-sensical theories about vaccines.

Malema has also taken a moment to urge South Africans to remain vigilant amid the second wave of infections.

“The images coming out of our overburdened hospitals have been terrifying, with makeshift hospitals being set up in parking lots and many people passing away while in ambulances because hospitals have reached their capacity. Funeral homes and burial schemes are faced with a shortage of coffins and the rate at which people are dying has lead to the treating of the dead like livestock because space must be cleared in fridges and coffins must be made.”

POLITICAL ACTIVITIES SUSPENDED

Malema said the party would suspend all its political activities indefinitely amid a surge in COVID-19 infections in the country.

Malema is calling for members to halt political gatherings pending further guidance from the government.

Malema said member must practice restraint and ease the weight on frontline workers.

“This decision comes as a result of careful consideration of the impact that resuming political activities may have on the spread of the virus and how it may contribute to the further loss of life. We have therefore resolved to postpone indefinitely the EFF’s plenum, which is a meeting of the elected leaders of the party and public representatives to forge plans for the upcoming year.”

Julius Malema lashes out at those who voted ANC instead of EFF at recent by-elections

EFF leader Julius Malema has lashed out at some voters who either did not go out to vote or chose to back the ANC at the recent municipal by-elections despite claiming to be supporters of his party.

Malema was on Sunday addressing residents of Ward 6 in Mohokare Municipality in the Free State, where the EFF secured 40% of the by-election vote on November 11, just behind the ANC’s 43%.

The ward was among the 96 wards up for grabs across the country as the ANC, DA and the EFF jostled for control and used the elections as a dry run for the 2021 local government elections.

Despite its significant growth in terms of electoral support in some wards, including in Mohokare, the EFF did not win any of the wards that were contested.

EFF provincial chairperson Mandisa Makhesini visited the area to thank the community for the massive support, even though it did not dislodge the ANC in the ward.

“The president is here to speak to them, to thank them for believing in the EFF and to give more courage to South Africans, come 2021, to do better than this year,” Makhesini said.

Speaking to the community, Malema slammed the continued backing of the ANC or voter apathy by some members.

“Shame on all of you who did not go and vote on that day. The ANC took the election because you stayed in your house. We ferried you in our taxis and gave you our T-shirts and said you must vote for us. When you got there, you voted for thieves,” Malema said.

He lamented that some had pretended to be backing the EFF only to vote for the ANC.

“Stop pretending. When you don’t love us, you don’t love us,” he said.

He then changed his tune and hailed the close contest between the EFF and the ANC in the ward, adding that this indicated that his party stood a chance of taking over in 2021.

Malema also slammed how farms in the municipality continued to enjoy electricity while some townships and areas where farm workers lived, remained without connectivity for years.

EFF leader Julius Malema has called on businesses to make sure at least 60% of their staff are South Africans.

Malema was at pains to explain that this was not a xenophobic call, but that it would stop employers from exploiting foreign nationals, whose rights, he said, were undermined when there were no South African workers in a company.

“When you mix South Africans with our African brothers and sisters, then they are guaranteed of their rights, their safety and better salaries because South Africans would never accept mediocre salaries from any employer.

Watch: Julius Malema fumes as Police take no action during violent protests by armed white farmers

EFF leader Julius Malema has questioned the lack of action as violent protesters — believed to be armed white farmers — stormed a Free State court.

The protests came the protesters demanded justice after the killing of 21-year-old farm manager Brandon Horner. Two men were appearing in court in connection with his murder.

“Whites don’t play: they are dealing with this clownish government of their puppet @Cyril Ramaphosa. No single rubber bullet shot. Can you imagine if it was black people … ” he tweeted, along with a video of the protest.

Hours after court property was vandalised and a police van overturned and set alight, police minister Bheki Cele urged officers to arrest those behind the criminality.

Cele said he was shocked and disgusted at the behaviour of the demonstrators — some of them the police minister described as “armed farmers” — outside the Senekal magistrate’s court.

“Police reports indicate that after the brief court appearance, about 100 demonstrators, among them armed farmers, stormed into the court building demanding the suspects be handed over.

“This violent act resulted in the vandalism of court property and a police vehicle was also overturned and set alight. Police had to use teargas to disperse the violent group,” according to Cele’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba.

Cele described the manner in which Horner was killed as brutal, but said lawlessness was equally not justified.

“While we all condemn the gruesome killing of this young man in Paul Roux, absolutely no-one has the right to take the law into their own hands — no matter what the situation is. This type of lawlessness can’t be justified nor taken lightly,” he said.

Images taken from the demonstration were widely circulated on social media. In one of them, a man is seen on top of a police van, seemingly addressing a handful of protesters, while police looked on.

Cele questioned the motive of demonstrators, who he said had turned their anger towards officers.

“There is no logic when these protesters burn a police van, which is the same resource that is meant to assist them. It is also baffling why the anger of this community is being directed towards the police, when arrests have been made by the police and the suspects are before the courts,” he said.

Julius Malema and EFF to block Beitbridge border post in protest against Zimbabwe's government

Prominent South African Politician Julius Malema has challenged Zimbabwean youths to take the lead in confronting their government and not wait for outsiders to take the initiative. Recently, Malema slammed Zimbabweans for venting their anger through social media and hashtag campaigns instead of confronting their tormentors physically

Addressing the media outside the Randburg Magistrates Court in Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday, the firebrand opposition chief repeated calls for the blocking of the Beitbridge border post in attempts to ramp up pressure against the under-fire Zimbabwe administration.

Malema is among South Africa’s prominent public officials who have come out in full condemnation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government for misrule. He last month called for a blockade of the Beitbridge border post that links his country and Zimbabwe as a form of pressuring authorities in Harare to stop rights abuses as well as invent quick solutions to the country’s economic mess.

For that to succeed, Malema said, it is the Zimbabwean youths themselves who should take ownership and lead the process.

“We are of a view that Zimbabweans must take the lead themselves particularly young people of Zimbabwe,” he said. “We suggested to them that they need to blockade the Beitbridge border gate for two days.

He added, “If we can blockade the border gate of Zimbabwe for two days, there will be no toilet paper in Zimbabwe and the people there will see the need to rise against Mnangagwa’s failure to lead them properly, but it can’t be us, it must be Zimbabweans and we will support them.

“So, we cannot take the initiative, the Zimbabweans must take initiative and we will support them.”

Malema also dismissed Zanu PF’s attacks on the EFF saying his party was deaf to “irresponsible” Zanu PF rants.

“Leave those irresponsible statements by those old people of Zanu PF, those statements don’t even reach us, we don’t take them seriously.

“The day the youth of Zimbabwe majority of them are here in South Africa, let them go and occupy the Beitbridge and our comrades in Limpopo and everywhere will go and support them.”

The party laid a criminal complaint against the EFF for inciting public violence, malicious damage to property, and intimidation.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday said that it wanted Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and all the party’s members who were attacking Clicks stores to be arrested for their violent demonstrations.

The party laid a criminal complaint against the EFF for inciting public violence, malicious damage to property, and intimidation.

EFF leaders mobilised members to close Clicks stores nationwide after a racist advert describing black hair as “damaged, dry, and frizzy” was published on the retailer’s website.

Clicks said that 425 stores came under attack on Monday, with an attempt to petrol bomb a branch in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, and the defacing of the store at the Lemon Tree Shopping Centre in Alberton.

The red berets want Clicks to fire the company and staff behind their TRESemmé ad and demanded that all outlets shut their doors until Friday.

But the DA’s spokesperson on police, Andrew Whitfield, said that the behaviour was political thuggery.

“This is not the first time that Julius Malema and his quasi-revolutionaries have called for violence and the destruction of property in the name of justice.

“The EFF’s call to violence and destruction of property will affect the livelihoods of thousands of Clicks employees who will bear the brunt of this destruction,” Whitfield said in a statement.

He added: “This is especially concerning given the tumultuous economic situation most people are facing after the easing of the COVID-19 lockdown. The destruction of stores will only mean that South Africans who have already been left vulnerable due to the lockdown will be put under further financial strain should they lose their jobs if these shops have to be closed permanently.”

EFF CALLS ON ZIMBABWEAN GOVERNMENT TO FOCUS ON PROTECTING HUMAN RIGHTS AND END STATE-SANCTIONED VIOLENCE AGAINST CITIZENS.

South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Sello Malema has called for the closure of the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa until President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government upholds human rights.

Malema statements follow South Africa’s former Public Protector and founder of The Thuma Foundation Advocate Thuli Madonsela sentiments saying the Zimbabwean government needs to be called to account for the recent arrests of activists following anti-corruption protests in the country last week.

The Zimbabwean government, which is currently engaged in the torture, incarceration, sexual assault and victimisation of protesters, has no moral authority or standing to claim to speak on behalf of the people of Zimbabwe.

This government, which is compensating land thieves for land which was acquired through a revolutionary process, has declared the people of Zimbabwe as enemies, through the deployment of the military to suppress genuine protest.

Journalists are targeted, and it is not the first time, as the Mnangagwa regime has a history of suppressing information, switching of social networks in order to hide the brutalisations of the people of Zimbabwe.

The EFF, therefore, as a movement committed to Pan-African unity, peace and stability in the continent, speaks with authority when it condemns the regression on revolutionary gains that have defined post-colonial Africa.

The fleeting paranoia of ZANU-PF around factions of their organisation does not concern us, and we must never be confused as a part of a faction of ZANU-PF.

The EFF does not owe ZANU-PF any allegiance, and we have now identified them as part of a long-line of oppressive regimes and failing liberation movements which no longer have a vision for the continent.

We are therefore not fazed by the utterances of ZANU-PF officials and reiterate that compensating white former land-owners is a reactionary move that Zimbabwe cannot afford, and these funds should rather be directed in uplifting the livelihoods of ordinary poor Zimbabweans and developing Zimbabwe.

Furthermore, we find it condescending that a diplomat, deployed to the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa has taken it upon himself to descend into the political arena with the EFF.

As much as the EFF encourages engagement of its policy positions, it is not the duty of an ambassador who is here to sustain relations between two sovereign governments to engage in a political tussle with domestic opposition parties.

We condemn this in the strongest terms as partisan and undiplomatic behaviour, and it will set a bad precedence for the future.

The ZANU-PF government and particularly the Zimbabwean embassy in South Africa must focus on putting an end to the violence in Zimbabwe instead of frivolous paranoia around G40 factions and the EFF.

We call on the African Union, and all governments in the SADC region to make an intervention in the crimes against humanity being committed by the Mnangagwa-regime against the people of Zimbabwe. These interventions must be tangible, and we, therefore, call for the removal of the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa until human rights are restored in the country, and the lives of people are not taken by a repressive government.

Failure to do this will result in direct action by the EFF to prevent any official of the Zimbabwean government from participating in meeting in South Africa while they wage war on ordinary people in Zimbabwe.

Quiet diplomacy by SADC towards human rights violations in Zimbabwe has never worked, and it will not start working now.

There must be an end to the arrest without trial and victimisation of activists, and all progressive forces must condemn the ZANU-PF government for the brutality it is practising on the people of Zimbabwe.

We cannot keep quiet while a military regime wages war on people in Zimbabwe.

Numerous South Africans, including prominent lawmakers, have communicated their mistake after President Cyril Ramaphosa reestablished the restriction on liquor deals in his location to the country on Sunday evening, 12 July.

The president additionally declared another time limitation set up from Monday, 13 July, somewhere in the range of 9pm and 4am, aside from crises.

While some Twitter clients’ conclusions were separated on the reestablished liquor boycott, the Economic Freedom (EFF) appeared undeterred about the boycott, however raised their interests on different issues.

EFF pioneer Julius Malema approached Ramaphosa to close schools in the midst of the ascent of Covid-19 cases in the nation.

“Boss please close schools, I’m asking you pleasantly @CyrilRamaphosa. I won’t compliment you on liquor since I cautioned you, however you decide to tune in to white capital and look now.

“Anyway, they merit you as their leader since they decided in favor of you. Comprador, think about our children,” he said on Twitter.

Another EFF pioneer Mbuyiseni Ndlozi hammered the president for his planning and ‘flippant’ tone.

“Neither a check in time nor a liquor boycott will help if everything else is as yet open. In the event that the pinnacle spends in two months, you should close down everything now. Something else, what is coming isn’t a pinnacle, yet in reality simply the start.

“We revealed to you boycott liquor, yet you presently censure individuals for viral contaminations. This man won’t take us genuine,” he included.

In the interim, the Democratic Alliance (DA) additionally pummeled Ramaphosa for restricting liquor deals once more.

“The is no ‘prompt impact’ except if there are guidelines that make it “quick impact.” The president doesn’t control by diktat. This is a vote based system guided by the standard of law. Until the guidelines are distributed, there is no boycott. This issues,” said DA MP Phumzile van Damme.

The new guidelines were gazetted yesterday and discharged to the media following Ramaphosa’s location.

“Government shouldn’t get the opportunity to go on TV, make declarations and it is so. It doesn’t work that way. Draft the guidelines, distribute them. At that point, and at exactly that point, is it ‘law’. This isn’t some banana republic where a president can make declarations on TV and they’re naturally law. This is a guideline we should all represent,” she included.
