Grammy award winner, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, better known as Black Coffee is being treated in a hospital. He was injured in what his team is calling a ‘severe travel accident’. The DJ was flying to a performance in Mar Del Plata, in Argentina.

Maphumulo sustained injuries and is said to be receiving medical care. His team says he’s recovering well and will be back on the decks soon.

News of Black Coffee’s accident comes just days after a report published on The Aviation Herald website citing a hard landing of a Flybondi B738 at Mar Del Plata on 5 January 2024 due to a “tail strike”.

“A Flybondi Boeing 737-800, registration LV-KJE performing flight FO-5720 from Buenos Aires Aeroparque, BA to Mar del Plata, BA [Argentina], touched down hard on Mar del Plata’s runway 31 at 22:28L [01:28Z 6 January] and suffered a tail strike,” read part of the report.

According to the publication, the aircraft involved in the incident “rolled out without further incident” and there were no reported injuries, despite the aircraft sustaining substantial damage. Argentina’s transportation safety board ruled it an accident and opened an investigation after the airline reported passengers and crews disembarked safely.

Nota shared a video clip criticising Black Coffee and he said he planned to have a go at his eldest son Esona.

“Your idol @RealBlackCoffee has been warned … It’s on sight when I see him. He’ll need to run off to Austria with Stogie T when I’m done with him. I’m finishing 2022 off strong by settling all my beefs once & for all,” he tweeted.

Last year, during a video podcast interview with rappers Nasty C and Scoop Makhathini, the world-renowned DJ and producer explained the importance of trusting the right people with your brand as an artist.

“I’m gonna mention names and when I look at this guy … he calls himself “The Authority” [Nota] … when I look at him, as a person, I wouldn’t want to be managed by a guy like that.

“You can get a guy like that to manage you, but you are not aware of his persona. And you give him your entire brand and you don’t know the conversations. You don’t know how he’s treating your clients and everyone who’s making you money. I’m saying these are the mistakes we make.

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed DJ Black Coffee has opened up about his mental health and reflected on his life.

The producer said after therapy, he started seeing a life coach, whom he described as brutally honest as he cried a lot during those sessions.

Real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo, Black Coffee was speaking at the mental health symposium by Investec Life, in partnership with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag), in Sandton on Wednesday, 12 October.

The DJ said he had never lived according to the standards set by society, and that the music he created was not based on what was trending at the time. He also shared parts of his childhood, his love of music and children as well as his personal struggles with fame.

Black Coffee said people had attached money to him, thinking that he was driving around with a stash. He said he had to train his brain to be strong enough to handle the pressure that came with his success, and he was now more aware of who he was than before.

“I have always wanted to travel and be an international DJ,” he shared.

And even after winning at the BET Awards in 2016, he said he still wanted to compete with the world. Finally winning a Grammy award came as a shock.

“Doing what I do brings a lot of challenges, and no one prepares you for it. All I wanted was to be a DJ. I never thought I could be invited to speak to people who are running the economy. Speaking was never one of my strengths. I never went to the kind of schools that my kids go to. Speaking is something I had to learn along the way, which can affect your mental health,” he said.

He shared that he also had to learn to dress for red carpets and ignore criticism on social media. And whenever he received backlash, he would fly out of the country as it hit him hard. Black Coffee shared that being raised and surrounded by women in his upbringing had him longing for a male figure.

“All my life, I was exposed to women. I was raised by my grandmother. I never had a voice of a man saying ‘come here my boy, this is not how it is done. It is done this way’. Women have built me and also destroyed me.”

He further encouraged mental health education to be introduced in townships.

“You must be selfish about training your mind because if you get into depression, you are on your own. It is going to be so hard if you get into drug and alcohol addiction. You need every strong method to never get into that hole.”

Earlier in the day, Sadag’s Cassey Chambers said anxiety and depression had increased since the pandemic.

She said the demand for the organisation’s services had increased, and it was receiving at least 3 000 calls daily from people seeking help.

“Mental health is the second pandemic to come out of Covid-19. Mental health issues are often faced by victims of crime and traumatic events, and not perpetrators,” she said.

Health practitioners further revealed that a lot needed to be done in workplaces to support employees struggling with mental health challenges. This as at least one in three employees had mental issues, it emerged.

“When you speak about the Grammys, to see that come to fruition, is insane for me, it’s something I’ve dreamt for him. I didn’t know I was going to go on stage, I didn’t know he was going to hand it to me, but that all is one fairy-tale. I have a lot of love and respect for him,” he said.

Grammy-Award-winning DJ, Black Coffee was dragged by Nota Baloyi, AKA The Authority over an old clip shared on social media. The music executive topped the trends list when he responded to the old clip taken from an interview on Zulu Man With Some Power Podcast, with Nasty C and Scoop Makhathini.

In the clip, Black Coffee said he would not want to be managed by a man like Nota. It is believed Nota managed Kwesta during their heydays but had a fallout when Rap Lyfe fell apart.

The trio was talking about the business side of the music industry and how they want to keep a clean stable because if there is one person who is bad, the rest of the team gets placed in the same basket.

Nasty C first commented and said, “Sometimes you learn the hard way. The messed up thing is that when there’s that one messed up Apple, people look at you guys as ‘we don’t want to work with them.’ I would say that, luckily for me, and I took these as hints. A lot of the people came up to me and said – is there anyone else we can talk to? And then I started to pick up the problem.”
Black Coffee added his own thoughts on this and said he likes to be hands on in things even though he has the best team which he trusts.

“It’s really tough, even if the structure is there. It’s all up here (points to the mind). One of the things I feel like I always made a mistake on; you build a team, and this is something I had never done until they told me. Something I didn’t do that much is how involved I am in my business now because I knew I had the best people. Now, moving forward, if you are going to send any e-mail that has my name cc me in. That’s all because I am the business.”

He then had to use Nota as an example and said he would not like to be managed by a man like him, “I’m going to mention names right now. Look at this guy, he calls himself the authority,” mentioned Black Coffee and Nasty and Scoop Makhathini laughed. “I look at him as a person and I wouldn’t want to be managed by a guy like that,” added Nathi.

“You can get a guy like that to manage you but you are not aware of his persona. And you give him your entire brand and you don’t know the conversations. You don’t know how he’s treating your clients and everyone who’s making you money. I’m saying these are the mistakes we make.”

Controversial Twitter blogger Musa Khawula re-shared this old interview from 2020 and it gained the attention of Nota. The Authority as he calls himself, poked fun at Black Coffee’s disability and said he should rather just focus on his hand.

“He should worry about managing his hand, being a good father & not me managing his brand… Im his late 40’s & he doesn’t have my accolades or my record sales. Where did his advice get Nasty C because Costa Titch has blown him out the water while Scoop still a deadbeat Dad junkie!”
