Amanda du-Pont dragged for ‘tone deaf’ post about flying to Turkey amid coronavirus

Amanda du-Pont dragged for ‘tone deaf’ post about flying to Turkey amid coronavirus

Amanda du-Pont has been accused of “recklessness” after she posted on social media that she was heading to Turkey amid the spread of coronavirus and encouraged people on her platforms to do the same.

On Instagram at the weekend, Amanda gushed about still being able to travel, thanks to “safety precautions” Turkish Airlines had taken.

“I’m flying to Turkey, one of my favourite countries in the world. Feeling safe knowing that Turkish airlines disinfects each and every aeroplane after each use! If you know me, you know I live to travel. It ignites my soul. I’m so blessed to be able to live out my dreams every day!” she said, tagging Turkish Airlines in her post.

It didn’t take long for Amanda to catch wind of the Twitter backlash.

She deleted her tweet and took to Instagram to address the criticism.

She edited the original post to read: “PS, there is currently less Covid-19, aka coronavirus, in Turkey than there is in SA.”

Turkish publication AA reported that there were 18 cases in the country.

The post was meant to advertise the airline’s services, but things quickly took a turn for the worse.

Meanwhile, on its Instagram page, Turkish Airlines said: “Your safety is always our primary concern. We are taking the most effective measures against the virus that’s spreading all over the world. We disinfect our aircraft using processes that have been approved by international authorities and proven to be effective. The safety of our passengers is always at the forefront of what we do.”

How do you take care of your mental health during the Coronavirus pandemic?

How do you take care of your mental health during the Coronavirus pandemic?

Your mind matters.

We all know the physical things to do to protect ourselves against the Coronavirus pandemic. We know to wash our hands (for 20 seconds with soap and warm water), to stay at least one metre away from other people, and to avoid crowded places. We know to cover our mouths and noses with a tissue when we cough or sneeze, and to isolate if we become unwell.

But what do we do about our mental health? Just the word ‘pandemic’ can trigger feelings of anxiety and even a brief glimpse at the news is worthy of despair with photos of overcrowded hospitals, tales of people dying and thousands being quarantined, news of flights being cancelled and entire countries being put on lockdown. We’re fearful for our own health, and for loved ones who might be more vulnerable. We’re worried about our livelihoods, with the virus causing huge economic instability and profits to plummet.

We are stocking up on provisions, we’re scrubbing our hands until they’re raw and many of us are working from home to try to avoid becoming infected with the novel virus. But what should we be doing to care for our mental health at such a volatile, unprecedented and uncertain time? GLAMOUR takes a look at the simple steps we can all take to make sure we are caring for our own mental health, as well as helping others in need.

HOW TO AVOID PANIC CULTURE

Panic is almost inevitable in a global crisis, but it is also almost always unhelpful. Plus, if you subject yourself to the panic, it’s human nature to get swept up in it and you could find yourself acting irrationally (we’re looking at you, stockpilers). This in turn, creates more panic – and the whole thing becomes a vicious circle.

Try and be mindful of your sources of information – silence the WhatsApp group that’s spreading fake news and don’t read the sensationalist headlines. To stay up to date with any important developments, head to The World Health Organisation, GOV UK or the NHS website. These three sources will cover anything you need to know in terms of safety and any recent regulations. The rest is just noise, which can be silenced.

Another thing is to make sure your mind has relief from constant stress. Watch a lighthearted comedy series on Netflix, download a feel good movie or go old school and start a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle – anything to focus your mind on something stable and positive.

HOW TO TACKLE LONELINESS

Many of us are working form home, either because offices are shutting as a precaution or some may be self isolating. Although it may initially sound appealing, both scenarios can be extremely lonely.

If you are working from home, make sure you talk to colleagues and friends on the phone regularly. Although social media has a bad rep when it comes to mental health, this is the time to prove that it can be used for good. Use it for what it was originally intended for – human connection. Once a day, go outside for a walk in the fresh air and if possible, go to a park or open field. While you may still be by yourself, simply seeing others interact and smiling at strangers can boost our mood and make us feel like part of the community.

If you are self-isolating, it’s very important that you don’t mix with other people for at least seven days if you have a cough or fever, and at least 14 days if you have been exposed to the virus. The lack of any physical contact can be crushing but there are certain things that can help. A weighted blanket is designed to mimic the sensation of a hug, and has been proven to relieve anxiety and aid sleep. Similarly, giving yourself a facial massage or hand massage (being sure to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand) can help to reconnect mind and body, bringing you into the physical space.

Also, why not try these calming techniques that will help to relax you? And tune into these podcasts to open your mind and contemplate non-coronavirus related content.

Golden Arrows defender Musa Bilankulu weds best friend Nosipho Majola, reveals how they met

Golden Arrows defender Musa Bilankulu weds best friend Nosipho Majola, reveals how they met

His eyes are filled with tears while he gazes at his wife-to-be as she walks down the aisle, wrapped in a strapless nude and white wedding gown. When she gets to him they hold hands and look into each other’s eyes.

“I will always love you and take care of you, my wife. Thank you for always being my number one supporter,” Musa Bilankulu pours his heart out.

On Friday, the Lamontville Golden Arrows defender Bilankulu (35), tied the knot with his best friend Nosipho Majola (25), in an intimate and lavish ceremony at the exclusive, Inimitable Wedding Venue in Muldersdrift, on the West Rand.

Just an hour before the couple said “I do”, Bilankulu shared with City Press how he met the love of his life.

“I miss her [Nosipho] so much. I last saw her on Sunday and I cannot wait to see her again, especially in her wedding gown,” said a calm Bilankulu.

He said patience and persistence helped him win Majola’s heart.

“I met her three years ago at the Gateway Mall in Durban. I was about to pay for my parking but I had forgotten my wallet in my car. When I went back to fetch it, I saw this beautiful woman. I knew that day she was going to be my wife.”

But Majola wasn’t interested though. When he asked for her phone number, she asked him to follow her. “I drove behind her until she stopped at a petrol station. She was shocked to see my car there as she thought I’d not followed her,” he said.

But eventually she relented and gave him her number. “Even after she had given me her contact details, I still struggled. I had to lie and said I was a financial advisor working for a popular bank because she had told me that she didn’t like dating soccer players as they always make headlines for all the wrong reasons,” he said.

She only found out five months later that he had lied to her about his profession. “One day I received a call from a friend who told me that he had just seen my boyfriend on TV. Golden Arrows were playing against Sundowns. When I switched on the TV, I saw him,” Majola said. “I was shocked and I immediately blocked him because he had lied to me.”

But it was too late for her to change her mind because she had already fallen in love with Bilankulu. She knew then that he was her soulmate.

“I had to convince her that she was in love with me and not with my profession. As soon as she realised that, we were happy in our relationship. It’s sad that people have painted all of us with the same brush as soccer players,” he said.

They are a match made in heaven and share a beautiful 11month-old daughter. Majola said being with him she has learnt to be patient, persistent and not to give up on her partner. She described him as a caring dreamer.

“Nosipho has taught me to love myself first before I love the next person,” he smiled.

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi was the best man. Popular Muvhango actress Kamo Modisakeng was one of the celebrities who graced the occasion.

Actress Nandi Mbatha on life after Isithembiso

Actress Nandi Mbatha on life after Isithembiso

Nandi Mbatha is one of the most talented upcoming actresses in the Mzansi entertainment sector and ever since stepped into the spotlight fans can’t get enough of her, she always keeps them glued to the screens trying to figure out her next move.

Nandi who suffers from anxiety and for her fear of being in the crowds is best known for her starring role as Simlindile “Simi” Ngema, in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Isithembiso. She was diagnosed with the disorder in 2010.

With Isithembiso coming to an end, most people are left wondering what would be becoming of their young and lovely actress who took the industry by storm as the naive 18-year-old who was university bound after having just passed matric.

While her followers are still stuck in that scenario, the actress who studied Political Science before dumping the course for the entertainment industry as she ventured into the acting and modelling is now looking forward to expanding her horizon.

Her entry into the industry three years ago made her an instant hit with fans and never to look back.

“We were blessed with three seasons of the show. Having been a 20-year-old with no acting experience before this big role, I believe my story was different and I stayed true to who I am as a person and I believe that contributed to my landing in the industry,” she told Move magazine.

THE LAST SCENE

The self confessed feminist who is in love with the colour Pink is not even worried that the show is coming to a close and is more than ready for her next challenge. “It feels surreal in a good way! Now I get the opportunity to explore myself and my abilities. I like change so I’m ready,” said Nandi.

She and her character are worlds apart, but owing to her prowess in acting, she switches effortlessly when need be. “Having to swap between her and I a lot, in those moments, it was just much easier to be her,” she said.

Not only that veteran actors like Hamilton Dlamini and Meshack Mavuso, are some of those who inspired her to understand the whole acting thing, one of her directors was instrumental in getting to know her character better.

“One of the directors on Isithembiso, Lufuno [Nekhabambe], helped me understand Simi in ways I wouldn’t have thought of. I never understood her decisions and reasons to just cry because her and I are so different!” She said.

SHOWBIZ

“It’s been an interesting few years in the spotlight, and it wasn’t a hard adjustment. I’m naturally the type of person who would not go for handouts or to have my hand held by someone who’s influential. I see it as a blessing, it makes me work that much harder. It makes me more grateful and my achievements much sweeter,” she said.

NEW BEGINNINGS

Nandi has another fish to fry as she waits for her next acting role, she has a modelling partnership with fashion designer Quiteria Atelier and this has witness her flying to Paris to promote the products.

“Walking in Paris wasn’t different to walking at SA Menswear Week. Just different surroundings and languages. My experience in Paris made me want to make sure I achieve what I need to so that going to Paris or New York becomes the norm for me career wise,” she said.

“The opportunity to see how other people move was interesting! Nobody really cares about who you are and what you can do, they want to see the hard work you put into it! What I’ve learnt has been an amazing highlight for my career because then I was able to identify open spaces, now I can work towards them and perfect my craft the way I want to,” she added.

The Isithembiso actress is madly in love with junior creative director of Quiteria Atelier, Mpho Motsi. The two lovebirds are not ashamed to let the world know about their romance.

Nandi and Mpho met on the job and their love is still going strong in leaps and bounds. “Nandi came to the Quiteria Atelier studio for fittings. We got talking and it turned out that we had a lot in common,” Mpho told Drum magazine the other day.

Her love with Mpho came at the back of her failed relationship with Tellaman. She reportedly broke up with Tellaman who hardly had time for her.

Dineo Ranaka drops pearls of wisdom on ‘mind retirement and self-love’

Dineo Ranaka drops pearls of wisdom on 'mind retirement and self-love'

DJ and motivational speaker Dineo Ranaka has some words of wisdom to share about the importance of “isolating external influences” and spending more time alone.

“The power in mind retirement is when you isolate yourself from external influences so you can elevate yourself with internal influences,” she said in a video on Instagram.

Dineo encouraged people to spend more time alone, explaining that this will enable you to understand your thought processes more and help to build confidence.

“When you have spent so much time with yourself, the moment you walk out the door, nobody can argue with what you believe in and nobody can turn your mind against what you have convinced yourself on,” she said.

Dineo added that spending healthy amounts of time alone also helps with having a positive outlook on life, self-trust and increased personal value.
