Alan Winde’s US trip is dangerous and unhelpful, says ANC
Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, is in Washington DC in the United States. He’s hoping to help ensure South Africa retains its place in the African Growth and Opportunity Act forum.
The country’s position on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has called into question its forum membership.
Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen says South Africa needs AGOA as it secures thousands of jobs in the country.
ANC Western Cape leader Cameron Dugmore says the DA is overstepping.
He said, “I think it’s clear that this is just one of a number of issues where the provincial government of the Western Cape; often under instruction from DA leadership [like] John Steenhuisen and Helen Zille, are taking on powers that do not exist.”
“We heard the empty threat that LEAP officers from the Western Cape would arrest President [Vladimir] Putin if he arrives for the BRICS summit. Everyone knows that is a power the LEAP officers do not possess.”
“It’s really political grandstanding.”
