The creators of popular television soapie The River, Tshedza Pictures, have been dragged to court for allegedly terminating the contract of producer Emmanuel Tlhakanye prematurely.

Tlhakanye is now demanding R319 000 in damages.

In documents filed at the South Gauteng High Court this month, Tlhakanye claimed that the termination followed his “wrongful arrest for robbery”, leading to a few nights at Brixton and Joburg Central police stations in June.
“On or about 25 June 2020 and at this place of residence, the plaintiff was unlawfully arrested by members of the South African Police Services and charged with inter alia robbery and kept in custody at the Brixton Police Station until 28 June 2020,” his papers, which Daily Sun has seen, read in part.

He states that he was later taken to the Joburg Central Police Station and charged with the possession of a suspected stolen cellphone and was subsequently released from police custody on 30 June.

“On 10 July 2020, the defendant (Tshedza Pictures CC) suspended the plaintiff and ordered the plaintiff to attend a formal inquiry meeting to determine the plaintiff’s suitability to continue working on the defendant’s production. On 13 July 2020, the plaintiff attended the hearings and explained why he was absent from work from 26-30 June 2020 and that his absence was due to no fault of his,” read the documents.
Tlhakanye further states in his papers that the parties had agreed to pay him a daily rate of R1 064.52 with the monthly rate including an additional R65 000 for his production equipment with all monies totalling R319 838.71 on a monthly basis.

“On 17 July 2020 the defendant conveyed to the plaintiff that the defendant terminated the contract in question. The termination of the agreement is unlawful as the plaintiff was not absent for a prolonged period and was absent due to no fault of his,” read the papers.
Tlhakanye is also claiming from July to March next year, saying his services amount to R264 000 broken down as R33 000 for eight months with an equipment fee of R52 000.

Tshedza Pictures spokesman Percy Vilakazi said they were dealing with the matter through their legal team and declined to comment in detail.

Tlhakanye said: “This is a personal matter, I don’t want to discuss it with the media.”

The River has captivated the hearts of many South Africans as the telenovela seeks to display the cut-throat world of mining after the discovery of a diamond in Cullinan.

The acting on The River is what gained it’s 5-star rating from viewers so we can only imagine that the actors are content with their pockets for them to deliver such performances. Introduced to us in January 2018, it has continued to grow making it one of the most-watched shows in the country.

iHarare has released an estimate on how much the actors get paid on the show. Leading lady Lindiwe Dlamini played by Sindi Dlathu‘s salary was disclosed. Leading man who is the ying to Lindiwe’s yang Zweli Dikana played by the talented Hlomla Dandala, bags R45 000 per month.

The lowest-paid actors salaries are due to their minimal screen time and these are Tinah Mnumzana (Flora), Thapelo Sebogodi (Khabzela), and Matshepo Sekgopi (Dimpho) and their salaries range from R18 000 to R25 000 per month. Followed by Lunga Shabalala who plays Lindani, earns between R20 000 and R25 000

Veteran actor Presley Chweneyage who stars as Thuso ‘Cobra’ Mokoena, earns between R27 000 to R34 000 a month. He is the first son and the eldest child to Thato and Malefu. Another celebrated actor Sello Maake ka-Ncube gets paid between R25 000 to R35 000 a month.

Larona Moagi, Lawrence Maleka, Moshidi Motshegwa, and Don Mlangeni all earn between R25 000 to R30 00 a month. Tango Ncetezo gets between R23 000 to R32 000 while former Isidingo actress Shannon Esra is paid between R25 000 to R35 000 a month.

Set in Pretoria, The 1Magic drama series The River follows the lives of the Dlamini family as well as the Mokoenas who are arch-enemies. These two families from two completely different backgrounds are brought together but also divided after the discovery of a diamond in Pretoria.

Speaking on the telenovela’s authenticity, Warren Masemola told ZAlebs that The River offers something different to the South African entertainment industry.
“I believe what The River has done different, compared to what other productions have done in the past, is that it has introduced something fresh. The language on its own and the geography on its own is in the capital city – Pretoria. We’ve hardly seen that in the Southern hemisphere or South Africa to be specific, and it brings about a fresh language, which is really a dialect and not a language that is only spoken in Pretoria.

So culturally, I believe that this telenovela has done great in exporting and exposing the culture and the dialect that is in Pretoria. Either than that The River is a fresh telenovela that has already won Best Telenovela at the SAFTAS and mind you, they’re only in the second season of the show,” he said.
