People seem to forget that just because there was little evidence to work through for the case, it does not mean the offense never happened. Something activist Ntsiki Mazwai reminds people on Twitter.

Lady Zamar has found her voice again after a long hiatus.

After three years of not releasing music the singer admits she had felt like she was naive when she got her big break and had to take time off to equip herself to understand how to navigate the industry.

“I came from being a smarty pants know-it-all that was super naive to being a person who totally understands the balance things and is sort of street smart,” she tells TshisaLIVE. The Collide hit maker says she reached rock bottom in 2020 after having faced public scrutiny.

Lady Zamar shot up the trends list on social media multiple times with tweeps questioning her sense of style, criticising her skin and bashing her for her relationship and consequent rape allegations against Afro-pop star Sjava.

“Twitter can be quite a toxic place, it can be violent and can cause a lot of people to get depressed, anxious or commit suicide but because I love the app, I wanted people who look up to me to have a space where I am and give them things that could possibly benefit them.

“I sat back and thought this could have been avoided, had I said no a little louder, or done something. It could’ve been avoided but it wasn’t because we’re all doing this life thing for the very first time … I’m doing life for the first time and I had to accept that I made mistakes, what other people have done is not on me but I’m responsible for my life.”

As an outspoken person, Lady Zamar says her first reaction to social media trolls was to try defend herself, but through her support system and therapy, she’s learnt to cope with it.

“My family and the God that I serve was my support system and lots of therapy, every type of therapy,” she says.

As she makes her comeback, Lady Zamar is introducing a new sound with her EP Royal Flush. She says she’s intentional in keeping the messaging the same surrounding love and self-awareness.

“I’ve always been about love and understanding self, celebrating self.”

She released her EP after the launch of her children’s book, titled Amara, which speaks about a “weak little child” who overcomes several obstacles. “I’m a writer naturally and I’m an academic, that’s where I always wanted to be. I wanted to become a world-renowned writer and so the book opportunity was a way to launch a part of me … becoming an author was always part of my journey and it’s going to continue being part of my journey. There are lots of things that I still want to do that will surprise other people.”

The one thing Lady Zamar always wanted was “to be heard”. The singer and songwriter said her “soft” voice was always lost in the crowd but through her music, she made people listen.

I want to be heard; as a child that is what I’ve always wanted. I felt like I was never heard because I speak so softly. And it created a need to have people hear what I have to say,” she said on a recent interview on “The Unplugged” with SlikourOnLife.

The “Collide” hitmaker opened up about her obsession with the “darker” things in life, saying that she thought a lot about death and loved vampires.

“I am obsessed with vampires and supernatural things. I believe that we are living in a world that has so much bad that’s going on and it is completely hidden by all the information technology, and we are not aware of it.
I also think a lot about death. I don’t know why people are afraid of death. I think that in order for you to properly live, you need to embrace the fact that you’re going to die.” The star wanted to write about the dark thoughts in her songs but was unable to.

I wish I could write that in my songs sometimes, but I can’t; people want to hear about beauty, even when you’re talking about things that are bad. They want to hear it from a perspective of hope. It gets tiring, so I just park that away.”

The Thembisa-born artist, who loves to write and has a children’s book out, said that as a child, she would always make up stories and test it out on her friends to see whether they would believe her.

“I’d tell them that I am lying, but I realised that when I say things, I have influence, especially through writing. I would apologies to my parents in writing and it had a greater impact,” she said

I have been working on a trilogy for a good eight years now, but I don’t know if it will be ready any time soon. I have one completed anthology that I want to publish and I am still working on my second one.

“And I am writing my second children’s story. I always tell people I’m 100% for writing and 99% for music.” How does she keep her sanity in the space she’s in
