Ginimbi burial bashed for ignoring Covid-19 regulations

Police had given a warning prior to the burial that those who wanted to attend should always remember the threat of Covid-19 and follow all the protocols meant to avoid the disease spreading among themselves and eventually their associates.

While socialite Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure was buried at his Domboshava home amid pomp and fanfare on Saturday, the event left concerns on how those who attended disregarded measures to avoid the spread of Covid-19.

The number of those who attended was supposed to be not more than 100, according to Covid-19 regulations, but thousands turned up. Many of them were without face masks or those who had them chose to wear them wrongly, while there was no social distancing, as people pressed forward to have a better view of the proceedings.

But there were a few who put on their face masks throughout the event. Thousands of people, among them local and international dignitaries, descended on Domboshava to bid farewell to the socialite.

They were greeted with posters marked “No Mask No Entry” at the mansion’s entrance, but they proceeded without the face masks.

Outside the mansion where tents pitched for speeches and other pre-burial formalities, people were packed to the brim inside the tent hosting Ginimbi’s body without maintaining social distancing, and the situation was the same with many others outside the tent.

Those who entered the mansion’s gate had their hands sanitised, a move which showed that burial organisers were pretty alert to the dangers posed by Covid-19.

A villager who declined to be named said while they were mourning their local hero, they felt exposed to Covid-19 because of the high number of people who descended on Domboshava, with many of them not following preventive measures for the spread of the disease.

“Most people here are at risk of contracting and spreading Covid-19 because there are thousands of people here and only a handful are wearing face masks,” said the villager.

“There is no social distancing and sanitisation of people outside the mansion, and people are doing what they want in breach of the Covid-19 protocols. We all know that Genius was a popular figure, but people should know that the Covid-19 pandemic has not ended yet and the virus is real.”

Among those who attended Ginimbi’s burial were politicians, business people, celebrities and ordinary people. One of Ginimbi’s closest friends, Kirkpatrick Chidamba, who was his personal photographer, said Genius was planning to extent the road from Hatcliffe to Domboshava.

“He improved Domboshava,” he said. “Most of the people in Domboshava are now building fancy houses because of the legacy that was left by Genius. What is going to be shared are Genius’ clothes, not his other property.

“May Genius’ family give us the chance to come here at his mansion and continue with what Genius wanted to be done. We are deeply saddened by this loss.” Speaking at the burial, Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa described Ginimbi as an intelligent person with a good heart who helped others.

“Genius was intelligent and was an icon in Domboshava,” he said. “I helped to get some of his cars in Zimbabwe. We enjoyed each other’s company and Genius had a good heart. People can say it all, but Genius was a good person.

“We used to train together in his gym. His legacy will leave on and I beg for a smooth transition of his wealth.” Ginimbi died in a horrific car accident on Sunday last week that also claimed three of his friends.

As he would have liked it done, Ginimbi’s friends made sure he went well with a moment of Shampopo showers when his coffin was being rolled down. Expensive bottles of Champagne were seen being popped at Genius coffin as he was being laid to rest.

Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure (36) breathed his last in the wee hours of Sunday. His death created a buzz on social media platforms and spawned wild conspiracy theories of how he lived, made his fortune and died.

Kadungure’s palatial mansion in Nyamande Village in Domboshava — some 30 kilometres from the capital — could easily be mistaken for a luxury home in Malibu, California, where celebrity homes can fetch way up to US$30 million.

Realtors say although the Domboshava house is located in a peri-urban rural set-up, the property can fetch well over US$1 million. The young entrepreneur’s dressing sense was expensive. He donned all the top-end brands from his favourite Versace to Dolce and Gabbana, among many others.

However, this luxury and ostentatious lifestyle made Zimbabweans home and abroad speculate about his source of wealth. Some claim he was an occultist who minted his money overnight.

His friends have a different tale to tell. The Sunday Mail last week tracked Kadungure’s close business associates who met him as a young and ambitious 17-year-old who then didn’t even know how to pop a champagne bottle.

One of these people is Brian Nyanyiwa, who met the late businessman around 2000. A shareholder in one of the Kadungure-linked companies, Nyanyiwa opened up about the makings of the socialite. Without much of formal education, the Domboshava-born Kadungure was more of a self-taught businessman who ventured into vegetable vending in his Nyamande Village at a young age.

His friends say even at an early age, so big was his hunger for success that he became one of the first “car dealers” since he fashioned out toy cars from wire mesh and sold them to his peers.

“Genius was always business-minded as he was inspired by his late mother — Mai Kadungure — who would spend several days on a bus travelling to South Africa as a cross-border trader. He always said if his mother could soldier on in a bus for days on end to fend for the family, he was capable of working hard and make it big in life,” said Nyanyiwa. Watch the video below…

Ginimbi’s real wife and soulmate Zodwa finally speaks out
The relationship between businesswoman Zodwa Mkandla and the late Genius Kadungure aka Ginimbi has always been shrouded in mystery and confusion.

Ginimbi and Zodwa Mkandla go a long way back before he was even famous.

Zodwa Mkandla, who had taken the proverbial role of the grieving widow, went on social media to mourn Ginimbi once again, writing

“Go well my soulmate no one will ever understand what we shared Ginimbi, no one can replace you REST IN PEACE”

According to some rumors on the streets, Zodwa Mkandla was the one who helped Ginimbi curve a path in the corporate world as she was already a successful businesswoman when they met.

The nature of Genius Kadungure and Zodwa Mkandla’s relationship was revealed in 2018, during a court case in which him and another flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo were accused of fraud.

During the trial, Zodwa Mkandla revealed that she was actually married to Genius Kadungure saying

“He is my husband, we stay together and Wicknell Chivayo even phoned me saying, ‘sister I’m sorry I dragged Genius into this case’.

However, she had to admit that their relationship was going through a rough patch at that time and they were separated after the lawyer exposed her.

“He is my husband, but we are on separation. We are on separation and we don’t stay under the same roof anymore”

Zodwa Mkandla is also said to have admitted in court that she still loved Ginimbi and they had joint assets.

She also indicated that they were still in touch and had an excellent relationship.

While they were allegedly separated, Zodwa once confronted Ginimbi and a woman who was thought to be his girlfriend and caused a fracas at Mt Pleasant in 2018.

Ginimbi himself never publicly claimed Zodwa as his wife and never spoke about his marriage.

Genius Kadungure was linked to several women, most of the social media influencers and socialites, but he never claimed any of them or admitted to being romantically involved with anyone.

According to reports, Zodwa is set to inherit Ginimbi’s Domboshava mansion and his cars and she was also part owner of his assets.

Ginimbi’s spiritual father speaks on source of his wealth and death prophecies
The late socialite Genius Ginimbi Kadungure’s “spiritual father,” Bishop Ismael Muzondo, has dismissed reports which suggest that the businessman got his wealth through magic.

Muzondo speaks as social media is awash with messages claiming that Ginimbi’s massive wealth came from black magic. Speaking to NewZimbabwe, Muzondo echoed the remarks by both Ginimbi’s maid and business manager saying the 36-year-old was a hard worker. He said:

Ginimbi was a young man with courage who did not hesitate to take high risks in business investments; those high risks brought him profits and fortune. That also created enemies among those who were jealous of his returns.

To most people who do not know him, Ginimbi was a very religious person who put his faith in God and sought blessings from the Lord hence his businesses prospered. Unfortunately, we were supposed to have a prayer meeting on Sunday, but he passed away.

People make money in so many different ways. Some make money because they rob banks, some because they work hard, and others make money because they do not sleep, working hard. For Ginimbi, he was one such a man who worked hard day and night and only played when it is necessary and made noise about it.

Muzodo said the trending prophecy about Ginimbi’s death was not from God adding that if it was from God, that message must have been delivered to Ginimbi to “allow him to position him, to prepare him and warn him. He added:

If that message was not delivered to him, but to someone else and it did not reach him, and then said it after his death, that message was not a message from God.

There has been mounting speculation on the value of Ginimbi’s wealth and how it is going to be distributed given that he was not married and reportedly had no children. In an interview with The Sunday Mail Ginimbi’s lawyer Mr Brighton Pabwe said details concerning the late socialite’s estate would be revealed in due course.

“We are waiting for the entire legal team to make the necessary arrangements. Perhaps by next week we will be having more information,” said Mr Pabwe, who is working with top Harare lawyer Mr Jonathan Samkange.

According to Mr Pabwe, Ginimbi’s fortune will not be distributed “anytime soon”. “It’s a long process. Interested parties will be called to a meeting and from there, we are going to map the way forward,” Mr Pabwe said.
