South Africa’s Bonang Matheba has been revealed as one of the hosts of the 8th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), which are happening in Nigeria on May 14, 2022.

The award-winning media personality will co-host the awards, which seek to award the best entertainers in West Africa with IK Osakioduwa. It will be Matheba’s first time hosting the AMVCAs. She has previously hosted the South African version of the AMVCAs, the Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards, in 2017 and 2018.

The AMVCA’s are one of the biggest celebrations of film and television talent across Africa, with the first edition being held in 2013.

It’s always such an honour to host live productions, and I think after Covid, we haven’t had the opportunity to be outside to have these big, big productions with live studio audiences.

“So, it’s lovely to have all of that back. It’s also an honour. Any single stage I get to step on is an honour.”

Matheba also mentioned that she had longed to share the stage with IK and was looking forward to working with him. Nigerians are very patriotic, and they support each other before anything else. So now being able to have that support from Nigeria is really great,” she said.

“It’s always been the plan for me to grow my brand outside of South Africa and make inroads into the rest of the continent. It’s been one of my strategies, and I’m ecstatic that it has worked so well.

“I see doors opening because the continent has embraced me and not just Ghana and Nigeria, but Kenya too, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, of course, Botswana, and more countries on the continent.”

Matheba recently hosted the Johannesburg leg of The Real Housewives of Lagos premiere. Just a few days before the premiere, she was in Lagos, where she was seen catching up with her friend and talk show host, Toke Makinwa and ‘Young, Famous & African’ star and stylist, Swanky Jerry.

“New York is tough. It is cut-throat and lonely, but I love the challenge. The US is massive, and everyone is trying to make it. They are also the crème de la crème of entertainment, they created it. It’s the heaven of showbiz. I did not get there and become the Bonang that is known in my country and continent. I needed to work to prove myself all the way to the top. The experience has been different in many ways,” she added.

It’s always been Bonang’s dream to go international, and she’s finally achieved it with lots of work.

“It has been good to me. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, since a young girl, I knew that I would start at home and then work towards being international.”

She says there’s lots of project up her sleeve and at the right time, she will make them known.

The radio station announced its lineup for 2022 and 2023 on Thursday, and the line-up unveils the new presenters that will be joining the station among a few other things. Sizwe expressed his disappointment at Metro as some of the staff got to know about the changes on Twitter.

“Why do radio heads make it so awkward when they change a line-up? Just tell the affected parties man, damn! People have lives to plan, it’s sad for them when they have to send statements via Twitter,” he wrote.

Queen B who once worked there years ago affirmed Sizwe’s claim by saying that’s why she left there, as the station runs its affairs like a circus.

There’s another shot of her posing next to a McLaren which many believe belongs to her. She also threw it back to when she hosted some friends on Valentine’s Day.

In 2021 YouTuber Rea Gopane made damning allegations against Bonang Matheba. He claimed that she introduced her ex AKA to drugs.

Her lawyers intervened and sent a letter to Rea which read in part:

“On Sunday 9 May 2021 you falsely and unlawfully accused Bonang Matheba in a widely published video clip of, inter alia, having introduced AKA (Kieman Jarryd Forbes) to cocaine. In the context of what was being discussed in the video clip this defamatory allegation was exacerbated by the shocking insinuation that the death of AKA’s girlfriend Anele (Nellie) Tembe was due to AKA’s alleged use of cocaine.

“The allegations were defamatory, hurtful and were deliberately intended to humiliate my client and undermine her reputation. The allegations are also, to your knowledge false. Your false utterances are compounded by the fact that at the time of making them on a public platform, you knew full well that these utterances would be widely viewed given my client’s high public profile.”

Rea was then instructed to issue a retraction and a video apology. He was also instructed to pay damages to Bonang amounting to R500 000.

Rea eventually issued a letter apologising to Bonang.

“To the extent that I have made statements to certain individuals and in the public media stating or implying Ms Matheba’s connection to cocaine, I unequivocally retract all such imputations and unreservedly apologise that they were made. I regret any inconvenience caused to Ms Matheba and undertake that it will not happen again.”

This was followed by a video apology where Rea apologised for the statements made on his podcast. He said that he was deeply regretful for what he had said.

“As stated in my previous retraction and apology to Miss Bonang Matheba, I would like to sincerely apologise to everyone who was mentioned in the podcast on the 9th of May 2021. I am deeply regretful of what I said and I now realise the harm that podcast could cause.

“I have learnt from my mistakes and I will look to improve my content going forward.”

In January this year, Bonang announced that she had won the lawsuit against controversial podcaster Rea Gopane.

Read, who can’t afford to pay the full amount right now will have to do so over a period of 30 years.
