Somizi opens up about depression
South African media personality, Somizi Mhlongo, has taken to Instagram to post a video in which he opens up about his battle with depression, and how he is taking charge of his life.
“I watched it (video) this morning and it felt like I was listening to something I’ve been needing to hear and it felt so good. I woke up feeling good as well. So I hope it has the same impact on you as well,” Somizi captioned the post.
“We’re talking about [mental health]. We all know how important that is. We’re talking about having those episodes of hopelessness, episodes of wanting to give up, episodes of being depressed, episodes of being sad, episodes of anxiety, episodes of everything negative,” he said introducing the topic of his video. “If I can save one soul from this video, I’m good. But if I can save more, or I can help more people feel better, I’m good.
“This condition doesn’t choose your financial status, doesn’t choose race, gender, sexuality when it’s attacking; it’s attacking. What I’m doing now is dismantling it of the power that it thinks it has by one talking about it.
“Now that I can recognise it, don’t deny it, but don’t glorify it. Recognise it and say, ‘I see you and I’m going to do something about it’,” he said.
