Hulisani Ravele questions government’s decision to contribute financially to Mampintsha’s funeral

Radio personality and presenter Hulisani Ravele questioned Kwazulu-Natal government why they pledged to support Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo’s funeral. She took her demands for answers on Twitter where she counted various reasons why she believed that tax payers money should not be used to send-off of the Kwaito star. Mampintsha died on Christmas Eve, last week December at King Edward Hospital after he suffered from a stroke.

On Wednesday, Kwazulu-Natal premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube announced that the premier office together with eThekwini Municipality would work together to provide financial support for the musicians’ funeral.

The star’s memorial was held today at eThekwini Community Church (ECC) and his funeral will be held tomorrow 30 December at Durban International Convention Centre. While many applauded the governments generosity, the radio presenter did not see any reason for it. She tweeted,

“Um, why is the government paying for a citizen’s funeral? A citizen who was not an official, not killed by any accident, catastrophe, natural event, or anything that would warrant the spending of taxpayer’s money?”

Ravele tagged the presidency’s Twitter page and asked them to “provide supporting legislation” but they did not reply.

According to Times Live, although Ravele did not use Mampintsha’s name, she did say that there were other ways to honor creatives who have passed on.

Twitter users were not all completely on board with Ravele’s views on the matter. While a few agreed with her, most of them shared that they agreed that government was not doing anything wrong, saying that Huli did not know what she was tweeting about.

“I’m glad this house [church] is filled like this because it means the love you have for Mampintsha, Big Nuz, Afrotainment and West Ink is big. There is still a lot of work to be done. Our sister Babes Wodumo must go back to her place at the top.

“Mampintsha was very talented and creative. Everything that was his, you could not compare it to anyone. How many groups in South Africa or across the world vanished for 10 years and when they came back they went to the top? Big Nuz was quiet and came back, and now they have what I think is the biggest song in the country and it’s because of Mampintsha and Danger’s creativity.
