Katlego Danke speaks out on new role on Gomora as Isidingo cancellation shook Mzantsi

Veteran actress Katlego Danke might not be seen anymore on “Isidingo” because it was cancelled by the SABC, but the star has gone from one set to the next.

Danke will star in Mzansi Magic’s newest prime time telenovela, “Gomora’.
She plays the role of Thathi, a trophy wife whose life takes an unexpected turn. Also leading in this production are industry heavyweights like Connie Chiume, Themba Ndaba, Thembi Seete and Zolisa Xaluva among many others.

Mzansi Magic describes “Gomora”, as a show that explores the disparity between lower and upper-class members of our country. With the contrast between the two worlds brought to life through one of the most innovative filming styles.
On her involvement, Danke said: “I was contacted by my agent to go through for an audition. I was then asked to go for a call back and for chemistry tests and the rest as they say, is history”.

The star said that what attracted her to the script was the gritty nature of it and that it’s telling a story that hasn’t been as yet told- the contrast between the rich and poor but living right alongside each other. And the story of this woman whose journey is told in living colour.

Describing her character, the former Backstage and Generations star said that Thathi is a girl who is spoilt and self entitled. The typical trophy wife.

“She grew up under hardship in the township but then found the man of her dreams who gave her the high life. She is a bit mercurial and can switch on people in a heartbeat.

“But when she loves she really loves hard. She’s feisty and has a sharp tongue at times but is also has quite an endearing and lovable nature that we can relate to”.

Explaining what she loves about Thathi, Danke said; “I love that she fights hard in life and is a survivor. She has a never say die quality about her that I really admire.

“She jumps headfirst into most things and she’s ready to defend herself. She’s also very strong when she needs to be and can stand up for herself”.

When asked how transitioning from playing Kgothalo on Isidingo to Thathi was, she said; “I had to literally let go of Kgothalo completely, release her and start by getting to know who Thathi is.
“I had to find what makes Thathi tick and find her essence to create her canvas. I had to work hard in finding who she is quickly in order that the scenes I perform make sense for who she is”.

“Whenever I hear someone tell me that that what I performed in a story is their real life reflected back to them or that they have learnt something from either how my character handled something or the consequences of her decisions and actions, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment. It’s not just entertainment after all it’s life and we learn everyday”.

“Gomora” airs from 30 March at 19:30, Mondays to Fridays on DStv’s Mzansi Magic (Channel 161).

South Africa’s first Coronavirus miracle: Free State man tests negative hours after testing positive

South Africa's first Coronavirus miracle: Free State man tests negative hours after testing positive

A Free State man who was reportedly the first South African to have contracted coronavirus without travelling outside the country has now tested negative.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said on Thursday night that the man was tested at a private facility in the Free State. Mkhize said that because the man “did not fit the case definition”, the test was done again at the National Health Laboratory Service in Johannesburg. That test came back negative.

As a result, the number of South Africans who have tested positive for coronavirus is now 16.

“We can’t explain why some tests come out positive then later negative. We released the result of positive, we then did additional verification, which confirmed it was negative. It’s not a crisis, it happens every now and then. This particular patient is now negative after verification,” said Mkhize.

At the media conference, The Ranch, a four-star hotel near Polokwane, Limpopo, was identified as a quarantine point for South Africans being flown back from coronavirus-hit Wuhan.

Mkhize announced that the 145-bedroom facility, 25km south of Polokwane, was the quarantine point.

Mkhize said the location was chosen because they wanted the repatriated South Africans to “come to a place [where] they are comfortable”.

The Ranch was a place were they could be observed, but also where they could “sit, enjoy themselves, call home, relax and have no real challenge”.

“Except that they can’t meet their families, there are no real restrictions,” he said.

However, he said they would remain in their rooms.

“They will stay in their rooms; that is where the quarantine will be taking place. They are not sick, no symptoms, no reported infections or any presence of the virus,” said Mkhize.

He added that The Ranch was chosen because there were no communities nearby. Also, the space available meant there were two lines of defence — one patrolled by the army, and one patrolled by the police.

“There is no chance anybody will be able to mix with the people. They are not criminals. They are not sick. They are not patients,” said Mkhize.

He added that generals were given specifications, including that the site was away from human habitation, and that it must be isolated. Families also needed to be housed together and not separated, he said.

“If anyone falls ill, they will be moved from here. Here, there will not be anyone who is either sick or shows any evidence of coronavirus,” he said.

In an interview with the Polokwane Review publication, The Ranch’s general manager Paul Shearer confirmed that the establishment was identified as the quarantine proximity point.

“We will be a quarantine facility where the patients will be observed for 21 days,” he was quoted as saying. “The Ranch, however, is not a facility for infected patients. Those of which there is the slightest possibility of having contracted the virus, will be accommodated elsewhere.”

He also confirmed to News24 that: “The property will be used as a quarantine facility under the full direction and guidance of the local authorities.”

Attempts by TimesLIVE to contact the hotel over the phone and through their Facebook page were unsuccessful on Thursday.

A SowetanLIVE reporter, who was in the area, tweeted pictures and videos of the army and of police arriving at the venue ahead of the press briefing.

Government spokesperson Phumla Williams said that, originally, 180 requests for repatriation were received. But over time, and having made consideration of personal circumstances, some South Africans indicated their decision to rather stay on at their respective commitments in Wuhan.

She was quoted early this week saying: “The flight will leave Wuhan City in the early hours of the morning and land back in SA on March 13.”

Meanwhile, Mkhize also responded to reports that, over the past two weeks, there were students who came to Limpopo — and several other provinces — from China.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about the status of these students. We knew that they were not at risk; however, with mounting speculation, we felt it was important to take necessary precautions just to make sure this matter is put to bed. It was all agreed that these students must be called and we do the tests.

“There were 14 students tested from Limpopo, two days ago. They have all tested negative. They do not have an infection. We want to put the issue behind us,” said Mkhize.

Maps Maponyane and Nomzamo Mbatha back Together

Maps Maponyane and Nomzamo Mbatha back Together

Maps Maponyane has had to set the record straight after a fan assumed that he had rekindled his romance with ex Nomzamo Mbatha. It was all bad case of mistaken identity for the Buns Out owner who dated the actress a few years ago (even though they tried to convince us they were just friends) after which they called it quits and moved on.

It all began when Maps posted a pic of himself embracing a woman – who quite honestly looked like it was Nomzamo from the back. Enter fan who reacted with pure joy after assuming her two faves were back together.

Maps Maponyane and Nomzamo Mbatha back Together

She wrote in the comment section; “Oh my God I was praying for you and Nomzamo to get back together. My prayer has been answered my favourite couple”.

It was probably a super awkward thing to do, but Maps had to burst her bubble by correcting her innocent error. Playing it cool, he replied; “Nah, that’s just ….”, where he tagged the name of the actual woman he’d hugged. Do you think Nomzamo & Maps should get back together? Or should she continue living her best life as a single woman?

Josie, who is the mother Mayweather’s children children, was found unresponsive in the driveway of her home on Tuesday night, BBC reports.

Although Josie had been in the process of suing Mayweather for $20 million (about R328 million) after she said he lied during an interview with Katie Couric about her being high on drugs during an alleged domestic violence incident in 2010, police said they didn’t suspect foul play with regards to her death.

Mayweather had been convicted for attacking her and spent two months in prison for the incident, TMZ reports.

The two were together from 1995 to 2010.

3 siblings tell mom they love her before dying in crash “Ma, I love you so much, I will always love you

3 siblings tell mom they love her before dying in crash "Ma, I love you so much, I will always love you

“Ma, I love you so much, I will always love you,” were the last words six-year-old Aiden Goodal said to her mother when she left for school yesterday.

Odile Goodal’s two other children – Lashay, 10, and Learyn, 11, – also told her that they loved her as they bid her goodbye in the morning.

This was something unusual because whenever the children left for school, they would just say “goodbye”.

Little did Goodal, 30, know that the words “I love you” would be the last she would hear from her two daughters and boy who all died in a car crash about 3km away from their home.

The accident happened just before 7am on the Golden Highway in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.

The children were on their way to Robertsham Primary School and are among the 12 people who died when a taxi collided with a Toyota Avanza.

When Sowetan visited the scene, a shoe, hat and a cap were among the remaining items at the crash site. Blood splattered on the tarred road was covered with sand.

Family and friends gathered at the Goodal family house in Ennerdale and wept for the children.

Goodal said she had no words to describe how she felt.

“They were such bubbly children and I never thought I was bidding them farewell for the last time this morning. I can’t believe that I will never see them again.

“They all told me that they love me and I should enjoy my day,” Goodal said.

Their grandfather Mervin Maart, 53, said the family was shocked by the incident.

“When we received a call that there was an accident
involving school pupils we never thought it was our children. I lost all my grandchildren. We are deeply hurt.

“If we knew that by sending them to school we were sending them to their death, we would have kept them at home,” he said.

A tow truck driver who witnessed the crash said he had “never seen something like that before”.

“My sister, I heard a loud bang and then I saw people coming out of the taxi.

“There were two passengers who were hanging from the windscreen of the taxi. Both cars got stuck to one another.

“In the Avanza, there were four school pupils and the driver. The driver of the Avanza and three children died on the spot. They used Jaws of Life to free the taxi driver,” he said.

Acting education MEC Jacob Mamabolo, who visited the school and the children’s family, said it was a sad moment for the province.

“We are saddened by the tragic accident and we felt that we should put everything aside and attend to it. The pain you feel is the same pain we are feeling,” he said.

Mamabolo said they were told the driver of the taxi lost control and hit the Avanza head on.

“Nine people are currently in hospital, including a two-and-a-half-year old baby. The police are investigating the cause of the accident,” he said.

School principal Sharon Lynch said they were saddened by the passing of the siblings who were in grades 1, 5 and 6 and joined the school this year.

The deaths of the Goodal siblings brings to 27 the number of Gauteng pupils who have died since the beginning of the school year.

Yesterday, education department spokesperson Steve Mabona announced that two other pupils had died.

Mabona said Siyanda Ntshangase, a grade 8 pupil at Protea Glen Secondary School No 2, in Soweto, died on Wednesday last week after he suffered from an extreme migraine.

Another pupil Sinesipho Mangaliso, a grade 5 pupil at Zenzeleni Primary School in Alexandra died on Friday after she was hit by a stray bullet while dining with her family at her home.

Yesterday, Sowetan reported about the deaths of two pupils who died after being fed poison.

Mona Monyane talks about the pain of her daughter's death (Losing my newborn baby was a turning point )

Even though it’s been two years since actress Mona Monyane‘s seven-day-old baby girl died, the gaping hole in her heart will take a lifetime to heal. Since announcing that she had separated from her husband, actor Khulu Skenjana, after four years of marriage, Mona has been on a journey of wellness and self introspect.

Mona Monyane talks about the pain of her daughter's death (Losing my newborn baby was a turning point )

Taking to her YouTube channel, The Power of Wellness, Mona took a deep breath and said: “So, two years ago after seven days, my daughter … my second child passed away in my arms. When that happened, it felt like my entire life stopped. It felt like I had lost complete faith in the idea of a higher power and the idea of God.”

Mona added that her loss made her ask herself if she was created to live a happy life and to prosper. “It was one of the most difficult moments of my life, but it was also the first time in my life I allowed everything to stop so that I can interrogate what I was feeling.

“And, when I did that – wow, that’s when I realised that prioritising my wellness was the best thing I could have ever done. Mona explained that at the time of her loss, she was a busy working actress who was very vocal about her pregnancy, even speaking of it with pride.

“I was so proud – I looked amazing, anyway. And although people had so much to say about how soon I got pregnant after my first child, I didn’t care. I was out there just letting them know that this was my body. The actress explained that she dealt with the loss by getting away from it all.

“I allowed nature to be my healer and my teacher. But what I didn’t anticipate was the many amazing and transforming conversations that I would have with various women in the interim. She added that her channel was about prioritising “physical, mental, emotional, ritual and financial wellness”.

Lerato Sengadi on HHP’s suicide

Lerato Sengadi on HHP’s suicide

Eighteen months since rapper Jabulani “HHP” Tsambo died, his wife Lerato Sengadi is still in a court battle with the Tsambo family over her status as the wife – according to customary law – of the late rapper. Talking to Eusebius McKaiser on 702, Sengadi poured her heart out about dealing with HHP’s death and fighting for her rights.

Talking to Eusebius McKaiser on 702, Sengadi poured her heart out about dealing with HHP’s death and fighting for her rights.

“My husband was sick – he had a mental illness and he died as a result of the mental illness. The way in which it took him was through suicide,” she said.

“In everything that has been said about me – this is my first time ever talking about any of this stuff – no one has been honest enough to say that he committed suicide, [they keep saying] ‘It’s alleged’. It’s not alleged – that is what happened as a result of mental illness.

“We should be able to have that conversation honestly, because these are things that happen all the time. We can’t be scared to say this person had depression.”

The publicist explained that therapy has saved her life, adding that the reason why she had moved out of their marital home was because HHP was unwilling to take care of the mental illness he was suffering from.

Sengadi also expressed her exhaustion over the ongoing case. She’s waiting for the Supreme Court of Appeal’s verdict, after the matter was heard on March 6.

“It’s emotionally, spiritually, physically draining. It’s been a very painful 18 months wherein I’ve had to deal with legal issues, when I’m supposed to be trying to grieve and figure out what my life looks like without the love of my life, my best friend – someone I had planned a whole future with.

“I’ve had to put that healing on a back burner in order to focus on getting my rights as his wife.”

Listen to full interview below.

Commenting on the case, Tsambo family spokesperson Nkululeko Ncana told TshisaLIVE that the family trusted that the judges would deliver a just and fair decision.

“The SCA has reserved judgment. The SCA bench heard arguments related to the matter. We are indebted to our courts and trust that the honourable judges will deliver a just and fair decision,” he said.
