South African scientists and Wits University professor speak on World’s first coronavirus vaccine

South African scientists and Wits University professor speak on World's first coronavirus vaccine

SOUTH African scientists have echoed the global scepticism on Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine citing insufficient data, incomplete clinical trials and have lambasted the country for cutting corners.

President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday that his country had developed the Gamaleya vaccine against the pandemic. Putin claimed that his daughter had received the treatment and that he was certain of its effectiveness. He said it formed a strong immunity and that it had ticked all the necessary boxes.

However, Professor Shabir Madhi, trial head for the Oxford vaccine study in South Africa and professor of vaccinology at Wits University, has poured cold water on the claims saying the licensing of the vaccine was premature.

Madhi said no data on the safety of the vaccine had been released yet therefore no concrete evidence was available on the type of immune response the vaccine infused.

“The country needed to do what the rest of the global scientific community is doing and that is to test the vaccine through proper stages. They have only done an equivalent of a phase one study and you do not license vaccines based on phase one studies,” Madhi said.

“If the licensing was based on what they are doing, then right now we would have at least ten different vaccines licensed but that is not the case because others are being more responsible in the manner in which they are going about doing their evaluations to ensure safety.”

Professor Tulio de Oliveira, director of the Kwazulu-natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) at UKZN, explained that clinical development was a three phase process and that it was unclear which level Russia had already completed.

He said the country’s decision to make an announcement prior to the completion of phase three had been a hasty one.

Under normal circumstances, phase one and two results are published and that has not happened yet with Russia.

“Phase three of vaccine trials is the most important one, that is when you test not only the safety of the vaccine but also the effectiveness,” he said.

He explained that scientists give the vaccine to a number of people and wait to see how many become infected, compared with volunteers who received a placebo. Results can determine if the vaccine protects against Covid-19.

“When you run a double blinded trial people will receive either a placebo or a dose of the vaccine and you measure over a given time how many people acquired the virus or were infected with the virus.

“If the vaccine is highly efficient it should protect against infection, the coronavirus and the placebo results should be quite similar to the normal population.”

De Oliviera mentioned that Russia was not the first country to claim to have an effective vaccine.

He said the UK was also guilty of drawing contracts with various countries prior to completing all trial phases of its Oxford vaccine.

“The US is doing the same, they are running two or three potential vaccines that are in a phase three trial and they also advertised that they are close to developing a vaccine,” he said.

De Oliveira said there was now an evident decrease in numbers of transmissions, however, it was the responsibility of communities to ensure their safety by following protocols in place as we progress to lower lockdown levels.

“Our government has been very decisive during this pandemic and they are following every best case scenario on how to control the virus.”

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi Snubs South Africans After Booze Unban

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi Snubs South Africans After Booze Unban

It is unlike Ndlozi today on the twitter streets, his queer silence has raised alarm from Tweeps who believe he owed them one of his usual rants after the presidential address.

On Saturday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on new lockdown regulations as he eased restrictions to level 2. Notably unbanning booze and cigarette sale from retail shops while easing mobility restrictions too.

This was after consultations with the cabinet whenceforth the South African government decided to ease the lockdown measures.

In most occasions after a Presidential address on lockdown measures or national updates; it had always been in Ndlozi’s utmost pretentious character to pen down disapproval of whatever that would have been addressed to the nation – meaningful or not.

To many Tweeps dismay, that was not the case today.

Many expected him to lash out at the re-admission of sale of booze – something his party EFF had long criticised.

While a great deal of them just missed his meaningless rants – for the fun of dragging him afterwards.

Here are some of the reactions Mzansi had after Ndlozi snubbed them on a commentary to the presidential address.

“Dear Somizi Mohale-Mhlongo, you said we should ask the universe and it will respond. I wrote this to ask the universe to ask if I May please have your old clothes and shoes that you don’t wear anymore.#BGF,” he wrote.

Somizi responded, saying he hopes they wear the same sizes.

He wrote: “The universe has responded to timing is perfect….I hope we wear the same sizes…..what’s yo shoe and suit size.”

The media personality said he was packing the shoes and clothes and would send them to the fan.

Mzansi celebrates as President Ramaphosa removes almost all Covid-19 lockdown restrictions

President Cyril Ramaphosa last night swept aside most of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions in a bold move intended to restart an economy shattered by nearly five months of lockdown.

Level 2 takes effect from midnight tomorrow, when restrictions on booze, cigarettes, inter-provincial travel and personal and family visits will largely fall away. Bans will remain on spectators at live sport, and on international travel.

However, bars, taverns and restaurants will be able to serve alcohol to sitting patrons until 10pm.

The president’s announcement comes after a week of intense consultations, highlighted by pleas and warnings from the business sector that SA’s economy is on its knees and that urgent action is needed.

The new regulations will be especially well received by the tourism sector, which has been warning of a jobs bloodbath of up to 600,000 posts unless interprovincial travel is permitted again.

The decision comes as the daily Covid-19 infection rate average has fallen dramatically and now stands at just below 5,000 a day.

All indications are that South Africa has reached the peak

Ramaphosa said this improvement, and lower-than-expected hospitalisation rates, influenced the cabinet’s decision to move to level 2.

“As we look back at the past five months, all indications are that SA has reached the peak and moved beyond the inflection point of the curve. Most of our health facilities have proven resilient, capable and able to withstand and deal with the surge.

“The modelled projections of infections, hospitalisation and deaths have had to be adjusted downwards as we have recorded better progress in the management of the disease.”

Ramaphosa said the decision was based on advice from health experts.

“We have concluded that the lower rate of infections we are experiencing should lead to the relaxation of the restrictions we have had thus far,” he said.

As of last night, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases stood at 583,653.

Ramaphosa revealed that the number of hospitalised patients had gone down from 10,000 to about 4,000.

“This is significantly reducing the pressure on our health facilities,” he said.

The number of Covid-related deaths reached 11,667 yesterday, but the recovery rate had risen to ‘‘an incredible 80%’’, from 48% when Ramaphosa last addressed the nation.

The lifting of the ban on cigarettes and booze salles will provide a much-needed boost to the fiscus, which has been hammered even as a flourishing black market has gained a foothold, turning millions of otherwise law-abiding South Africans into criminal suspects overnight.

Smokers will finally have access to popular brands of cigarettes at their normal price at their nearest outlets.

Bars will open their doors for the first time in almost five months under strict regulations. Liquor stores will be allowed to sell alcohol between Monday and Thursday.

However, other restrictions — including a 50-person limit on gatherings, a curfew in force between 10pm and 4am and wearing of face masks in public — remain in place. The cabinet also advised citizens over the age of 60 to continue to stay indoors. Although family visits will be allowed, the cabinet advised they happen only when necessary.

The cabinet reached the decision yesterday after receiving advice from health experts, and after consultations with other government spheres, business, labour, the community sector and traditional leaders.

The move to level 2 was first mooted at a meeting on the National Coronavirus Command Council held on Tuesday, where directors-general sounded a warning about the economy to Ramaphosa and his ministers.

“The advice given was that as the country is doing well to manage the crisis, but the economy is taking a battering. That we need to open up more sectors of the economy, including allowing alcohol and tobacco sales to resume. We said the economy must open up more,” said a source who attended the meeting.

This was followed by a meeting of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council on economic recovery on Wednesday. On Thursday, the president received advice from the National Economic Development and Labour Council, where a draft economic recovery plan was presented. In that meeting both business and labour urged Ramaphosa to lift restrictions that hampered economic activity.

Martin Kingston of Business for SA said it was in that meeting that Ramaphosa expressed his commitment to relaxing the regulations.

“As business we were clear in what we think there needs to be an accelerated transition into level 2 and beyond. We said the sectors of the economy that have been prevented from full participation, hospitality and alcohol, need to be enabled to participate as a matter of urgency because jobs and businesses are on the line, they are very vulnerable.

“The president was extremely sensitive to this issue and his commitment was that they would move to level 2 as quickly as they practically can, but they are still taking advice,” said Kingston.

Yesterday, the president first met the Presidential Co-ordinating Council, made up of premiers and mayors, where he told them of his intention to open all economic activity. This was followed by a special cabinet meeting yesterday afternoon, where the final details of the reopening were thrashed out.

Ramaphosa also announced that the government would soon unveil a new app that would assist in contact tracing.

“In addition to manual contact tracing and the national WhatsApp channel, a mobile application will be used to notify contacts more quickly while preserving their privacy and anonymity,” said Ramaphosa.

He paid tribute to health-care practitioners who have been at the forefront of fighting the virus. He also thanked traditional and religious leaders who provided “guidance on how religious and cultural observances can be adjusted during the time of coronavirus”.

“Little did we know that he saw his way. That’s when he went to Radio Bob and became famous,” he said.

He said they always guided him.

“That is why he became famous and was able to have a family.

“He listened to us, grew up and had his own family.

“He would gather us in December and make sure that we have fun and be merry,” he said.

His childhood friend, George Manyosi, said him and Bob learned English on TV and radio.

“The beauty about Mabena was his charisma and his hunger to learn.

“All the way from here he would take criticism and the last thing was his kindness,” he said.

Bob’s wife Eucharist Mabena made a tribute to him.

“The 10th of August is still a vivid nightmare, the day I watched my Superman put down his cape, the day I never thought I would experience in my life.

“The day I drove back home knowing that I would never see you again.

She said that her husband was a giver.

“He was a great teacher, very patient, and consistent.

“The person he was to the world was the same person even better at home,” she said.

“I was supposed to get married in April so lockdown happened about three to four weeks just before we were like finishing off with plans. My husband is from Germany so he had half of his family coming down, I had friends from the US, some from the UK coming down and so it was just like chaos I mean it still is because we could still kind of like don’t know where we are with it… if we’re going still going have a wedding.”
