Showmax Pro is launching in South Africa and it comes with live sport

South Africans can look forward to the launch of Showmax Pro, with live sports streaming, on Wednesday 19 August.

Showmax Pro offers subscribers additional content alongside the traditional Showmax entertainment service, including music channels, news, and live sport streaming.

It is positioned as an alternative to Netflix, with the benefit of including live sports streaming which is not available on competing services.

The service has been launched in over 40 countries in Africa, but has yet to roll out to the South African market.

This is expected to change when MultiChoice hosts its DStv Showcase on Wednesday, where it is expected to launch the service locally.

The two prominent questions about Showmax Pro in South Africa are which live sports will be included and what it will cost.

The international version includes all Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, and PSL games, and live sports events like IAAF athletics, global marathons, and professional boxing.

The live sports selection doesn’t include other popular international sports such as rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, or motorsport.

Media Monitoring Africa director William Bird predicted that MultiChoice will include rugby and cricket in the local version. This, however, has not been confirmed.

The international version of Showmax Pro is priced at $17.99 per month, which roughly translates to R299 per month.

The pricing for the local version will most likely depend on the live sports channels that are included and may mirror a comparable DStv bouquet.

MyBroadband asked MultiChoice for details about its planned Showmax Pro launch in South Africa, but the company did not respond by the time of publication.

TT Mbha credits real friends in his book.

Cracks are emerging in Somizi Mhlongo and TT Mbha’s bromance after the proprty mogul snubbed Somgaga by not crediting him in the list of supportive friends who helped him beat Coronavirus.

In the chapter titled Supportive friends of his new book titled Tough Talk With TT Mbha which he shares his painful journey with Covid-19 while dealing with negative publicity, betrayal and false accusations by some celebrities who charged that he attended the Act Now march in June knowing that he had tested positive.

In the chapter, TT Mbha mentioned Andile Ncube, Dr Makhosonke Maseko, Thandeka Nombanjinji Nzama, Sydney Matlhaku,Malcom X, Lupi Ngcayisa and Nokhuthula Nkuta. He however did not mention Somizi.

“I remember psting a collage of six of my good friends (Ncube,Nkutha,Nzama,Malcom X,Ngcayisa,Matlhaku, whom I specifically did not include on that particular post because he is an extremely private person,” he says in the book.

Speaking to Sunday World, TT Mbha explained why he shunned Somizi.

He said the supportive friends he mentioned were those “who did more than what other people” did for him during his hour of need.

“I specifically highlighted those people because they really went above and beyond just calling and checking up on me. Most of them bought me essentials. Some of them would do grocery shopping for me”, TT Mbha explained.

When asked for comment Somizi hurled profanities.

“How many words do you meed from response to make your salary of R2.40 per word for le sende ongibuza lona (The testicle you are asking me),”he said

TT Mbha’s book will be launched before the end of this month.

I have a ring, I’m married: controversial qgom singer Babes Wodumo reveals who her husband is

I have a ring, I'm married: controversial qgom singer Babes Wodumo reveals who her husband is

The life of Babes Wodumo, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, is far from perfect, and has at times resembled an overly dramatic film that we can’t look away from.

The controversial qgom queen’s life has always attracted bad publicity, but last year was the most dramatic for Babes.

A physical assault on her during a Instagram Live feed went viral and was followed by her laying assault charges against her boyfriend, Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo. In the video, Mampintsha was seen attacking the 26year-old, an act that was met with anger by the country and saw him being labelled a woman basher.

He later laid assault charges against Babes, but the pair soon found their way back into each other’s arms and have since dropped their charges.

Shortly thereafter, the pair released a song titled Khona Iyngane Lay’ndlini, loosely translated as “there are children in the house”.

Her fans were not happy, saying she had failed women by dropping the charges against her 38-yearold boyfriend.

After keeping a low profile for a while, Babes spoke to City Press this week.

“Look, I’ve trended quite a lot and not always for the right reasons. I would rather avoid all of that these days and grow up a bit. We are also people at the end of the day. When you get hungry, you eat and when someone upsets you, you react. We tend to forget that people are looking up to us. Mandla and I seem to trend quickly,” said the Wololo hitmaker.

This time around, she is trending for a good reason – she recently released a new offering, the 13-track Idandokazi.

Babes says lockdown helped her find the time to start and complete the album.

According to Babes, things between her and Mampintsha are less tumultuous: “Everything is better now. We understand each other better now. If something does crop up, he takes a walk and gets some air, which is what he should have done all along.”

She does hurry past the topic somewhat, but she confesses that they went to couples therapy.

“Yeah, we went … things are better now.”

Last year, Babes’ father, reverend Welcome Simelane, came out saying that he would be forced to wash his hands of Babes if she failed to see reason and stayed with Mampintsha.

“He was upset. As a parent, he cares and [things] got heated. We are all good now.

These things happen, but we are perfect now; everything is fine now.”

Just the other day, rapper Swizz Beatz and

Alicia Keys were dancing to her lead single, eLamont.

“I was so happy when I saw that. I could not even sleep. I mean, how would you feel? It was insane. I still can’t believe it.”

Locally, however, her latest work may not be as resounding a success as her first album.

Even though Idandokazi has received mixed reviews, Babes remains unfazed.

“I think it’s hate, maybe envy. It isn’t all as friendly as it seems between labels and it’s painful. Sometimes it feels like, because Babes didn’t sign with so-and-so, they [other labels] do things to block her progress. We, as artists, end up getting involved in the issues of the executives. We end up not seeing eye to eye, especially as women.

“You then find out one day that you and this person are mad at each other for reasons that you’re both uncertain of. Those amapiano guys are supportive of each other. That’s a solid unit, but with us … it’s not always the case.”

Babes came out and took the airwaves by storm, attracting the attention of the international arts community with her appearance on the Black Panther movie soundtrack, as well as her collaboration with the international electronica band Major Lazer.

“Working with Major Lazer was so rewarding. They have worked with some really good artists and for them to select me was surprising. People asked them why not this person or that person, but they insisted, and that was an honour and a privilege [to work with them]. It is sad that people overseas see the talent, but at home you are not as appreciated.”

I’M MARRIED TO GQOM

The music tastes of the country have perhaps shifted away from the flavours of the shore and moved to the interior with the rise of amapiano.

“The two are very different. Ipiano feels a little like the beats are all made by the same person, but with gqom, there is more variation and different elements.

“Even the way the beats make your body move. Ipiano is a bit slow; it makes you move slowly like an elderly person. We aren’t trying to take it easy here; we dance down here.

“I would love to work with them [amapiano artists], but my issue is that I am a gqom artist. I have a ring; I’m married to gqom and so it’s hard to leave your husband like that. If I did that, it would be like removing my crown and handing it to someone else. I can’t have that. If someone produced a beat that flipped halfway from amapiano to gqom for me to do my thing… then I would be keen.”

She says she has been approached by record labels coaxing her to expand her sound.

“Even the amapiano guys are always calling me and sending me beats. I would not leave West Ink, though. I have also opened Wena Wodumo Entertainment, which is my side of things at the label.”

As it’s Women’s Month, she advises men to buy their women flowers and make them breakfast in bed.

“Yes! They should treat us better. It’s so painful to see women getting hit, raped and killed. Men need to understand that, if you get angry, you walk it off. Leave the house. Things should never get to the point where you lay your hands on someone.”

Somizi proves his heart of gold once again, offers fan his old clothes and shoes

If there’s one thing this pandemic has taught us, it’s that Mzansi’s spirit of kindness and generosity never wanes.

One local celebrity in particular has come through time and time again, trying his best to fill requests from his more than 2.2 million Twitter followers. It’s no wonder Somizi Mhlongo has been having a busy lockdown – he’s been doing the Lord’s work.

Just last week the “Idols SA” judge responded to individual requests from his followers. From promising to buy one follower a set of Le Creuset pots to supporting a local fashion brand, Mhlongo’s acts of kindness haven’t gone unnoticed.

So when Shimane Bethuky from Limpopo sent a special request to the reality TV star, of course Mhlongo responded.

“Dear Somizi Mohale Mhlongo

“You said we should ask the Universe and it will respond

“I wrote this to ask the Universe to ask if I May please have your old clothes and shoes that you don’t wear any more,” tweeted Bethuky.

Within a matter of hours, Mhlongo responded with: “The universe has responded to timing is perfect…..I hope we wear the same sizes…..what’s yo shoe and suit size.“

Bethuky could find himself the willing recipient of a luxe designer wardrobe. It’s a well-known fact that Mhlongo loves the finer things in life, including being an avid lover of local fashion label Rich Mnisi.

For their traditional and white weddings, both Somizi and husband Mohale were dressed by Gert-Johan Coetzee.

The “Idols SA” judge is also giving upcoming fashion designers an opportunity to make him killer outfits for the new season of the reality show.

President Ramaphosa in trouble over alcohol and tobacco ban

President Ramaphosa in trouble over alcohol and tobacco ban

The possibility of seeking reparations from government has not been ruled out.

The ban on alcohol and tobacco products may have been lifted, but the court cases challenging them aren’t disappearing just yet. For the past five months, players from both industries have spent millions on court battles in an attempt to force government to relax the strict measures meant to ease their response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and at least one of them intends to push through on its challenge, despite the lifting of the bans.

Alcohol sales were prohibited to reduce pressure on hospitals, where doctors were having to focus on road accidents and other booze-related injuries in emergency wards, while Covid-19 cases mounted.

Alcohol sales were temporarily allowed again in June, leading to a spike in hospitalisations, and a swift rebanning when cases began to spike.

So, understandably the country’s smokers and drinkers celebrated when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that “restrictions on the sale of tobacco will be lifted, the suspension of the sale of alcohol will be lifted subject to certain restrictions”, on Saturday night.

This means that both cigarettes and liquor will be back on the shelves after midnight today, but that doesn’t mean the court challenges against the bans on both industries’ products will simply disappear.

The tobacco ban proved much more difficult to justify than that of booze, as these products were restricted ostensibly because of the health impacts of smoking, as well as the risk of infection between people sharing cigarettes.

Tobacco product manufacturers, however, questioned the science on which the ban was based, saying smoking damage would only be evident after long-term use, thus a short-term ban served no purpose. They also questioned the rationale of arguments around sharing, saying the shortage and high price of black market cigarettes made it more likely smokers would share. British American Tobacco’s (Batsa) court challenge of the ban hinged on its supposed unconstitutionality, and they told the Western Cape High Court the harm caused by the ban far outweighed the benefits to the public health system.

Batsa advocate Alfred Cockrell told the court the ban violated the rights of consumers and the right to free trade, questioning the argument that smoking could result in a severe form of Covid-19.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s advocate Karrisha Pillay had pointed to studies showing smokers’ increased risk of contracting respiratory diseases, including warnings from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Cockrell did not buy these arguments, saying: “Nowhere in this document does the WHO say, ‘we recommend that government prohibit the sale of cigarettes’.”

In a separate case, the Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita) argued the ban was harming both the industry and individuals, and the reasoning behind it was irrational.

The court ruled against them, saying Fita’s argument that tobacco products be considered necessary due to the negative effects the ban was having on those dependent on them was without merit.

It also found Fita had ignored the context of the ban, which was that swift action was required by government in the midst of an international pandemic.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of Appeals (SCA) granted Fita access to appeal the ban on cigarette sales directly.

In response to Fita’s application, Dlamini-Zuma slammed the organisation in her papers, and accused cigarette industry players of being motivated purely by financial interests.

Shortly after the lifting of the ban was announced on Saturday night, Fita chairperson Sinenhlanhla Mnguni told the SABC their legal challenge would continue.

Mnguni said it was necessary to continue to prevent government from being able to reinstate the tobacco ban should the country returns to a higher alert level.

Another reason for their refusal to drop the case is the costs aspect. In the decision to grant Fita leave to appeal, the SCA temporarily set aside the costs order against them. Should they not continue the costs order will be reinstated, leaving them liable for millions in legal fees.

Fita has also not dismissed the possibility of seeking reparations from government, should the courts find the ban was illegal and unfairly prejudiced the sector, leading to the loss of millions in income due to lost sales.

A court date for Fita’s SCA application has not yet been set down. Meanwhile, judgment has been reserved in Batsa’s challenge. –

University cancels event featuring Mbongeni Ngema after he beat up ex-wife over Leleti Khumalo

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has cancelled an event in which playwright and seasoned actor Mbongeni Ngema was to be the main speaker.

Ngema, who has gender-based violence allegations hanging over his head following claims made by his ex-wife Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema in her tell-all book, was expected to speak under the theme Arts and Social Justice: The Pursuit of a Nonracial, Non-sexist Democratic South Africa.

According to a flyer on social media, the event was scheduled to take place virtually on August 27.

Other panelists were Tefo Maloka and Gugu Xaba.

The event was to be hosted by Buwa Student newspaper and TUT. In her book, Heart of a Strong

Woman, which was released two weeks ago, Nduneni-Ngema accused her former husband of raping her and beating her to a pulp just before they separated over 20 years ago.

Women in the arts have since voiced their anger on social media over the event, accusing the university of giving a platform to a “woman abuser”. TUT spokesperson Willa de Ruyter confirmed that the event has been cancelled.

“We are having a management meeting on Tuesday and we will comment more on that.”

Ngema said: “The university told me they are cancelling the event because of article published last week. I’m not concerned by the cancellation; I am actually used to these things by now where newspapers write things about

The TUT arts department’s Janine Lewis said she had raised the issue with the university internally.

“When we [performing arts department] saw the poster we were concerned about Mbongeni’s reputation because of the topic. We celebrate him as a brilliant and well-known artist and will not take that away. We just felt the topic was not appropriate with the latest reports that are coming out from his ex-wife.”

#Uyajola99 #Uyajola99Sunday: It's not what it looks like, he was just naked in my bedroom

Uyajola 9/9’s latest episode, which aired on Moja Love on Sunday, 16 August 2020, detailed Sibusiso’s suspicions, as he was convinced that his girlfriend was seeing someone else. According to the young man, his girlfriend has been staying out all night and acting suspicious when it comes to her phone. Upon further investigation, Jub Jub found out that she was with another man in their home, as she believed that Sibusiso was still at work.

Jub Jub and Sibusiso walked in on the pair in bed together, although the woman defended herself by stating that it isn’t what it looks like. She claimed that the man had given her lift, and they were nothing more than colleagues. Sibusiso was outraged by her actions, and confronted her about being unfaithful in their bed and using his money to meet another man.

The woman then directed her anger at Jub Jub and accused him of embarrassing her on national TV. The host humorously clarified that it isn’t just for an ordinary TV show, it is for Uyajola 9/9, which means that she will now be known as a cheater. One Twitter user commented, “Jub Jub takes it to another level. That’s why we love him.”

Father of 5 King Monada (27) chases away nagging second wife

King Monada’s marriage to his second wife, Cynthia Leon is in a state of idibala. Celebgossip.co.za has learnt that King Monanda has chased Leon out of his harem in Mokgoloboto village, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo, last week.

The news was revealed by a close relative who was happy to see the back of Leon. The relative, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, said King Monada grew tired of her curtain lectures and henpecking.

The relative also said Leon disrespected King Monada’s mother and was unwelcoming towards the muso’s visiting relatives. The next of kin also said Leon, who works for the Greater Letaba municipality in Modjadjiskloof, has since returned to her parental home. King Monada apparently complained several times that Leon always screamed at and criticized him whenever he returned home late from work.

“She didn’t understand that by virtue of being a celebrity, Monada is a people’s person and sometimes or always will return home late at night because he has to make money. But she will nag him for that,” said the relative. The relative also said King Monada took issue with Leon’s lack of hospitality towards his family when it visited. But the last straw was when Leon apparently exchanged acrimonious words with his mother.

“He then told her to go back to her parents’ home to be properly disciplined as she lacked respect. She left but returned to Monada’s house later in a bakkie and took her stuff and drove off.”
