A musical ensemble, Teargas is one of the most legendary Hip-Hop groups to have come out of South Africa. Releasing their debut album back in 2006. The trio, consisting of K.O, Ma-E and Nthukzin, their career as a trio spanned close to ten years with their last album being released in 2012 titled Num8er Num8er.

While as a trio, Teargas is still one of the most legendary groups of Hip-Hop locally, their individual careers have all flourished, or not so much, differently. As such, it made sense when Ma-E took offence to the suggestion that he is part of the worst rappers of all time in South Africa. But he was not the only one to catch strays from the notorious Twitter account.

It started when the contentious podcast Everything SA Music took to Twitter to share their list of the worst rappers of all time. ESAM as it is better known is the podcast which is fronted by the contentious pop-culture commentator Rea Gopane, who was sued by Bonang Matheba not so long ago. The list in question did have some names that were fitting on the list like the likes of Sean Pages, DuBois and Ex Global.

But it then also included contentious names, including Ma-E. Upon reading this fact, Ma-E took offence like the rest of his fans at the suggestion that he was one of the worst rappers of all time. This is as Ma-E might have not had a hit in some years with Bumpa being released back in 2017. But the rapper, who has been affectionately called the Township Counsellor, is not necessarily a bad, let alone, the worst rapper. A fact he asserted in a fiery tweet hitting back at the suggestion.

But he was not the only one to assert the classification of him being one of the worst rappers in Hip-Hop history is unwarranted. Besides his fans, Sizwe Dhlomo, entered the chats to support and endorse Ma-E’s efforts in pushing Hip-Hop forward.

When it is all said and done, there is no such thing as bad publicity. And this could be the case in terms of Ma-E and his clapback at the suggestion that he is one of the worst rappers in Hip-Hop history. This is as the Teargas alumni on Friday, 2 September 2022, released his new EP Namanje & Forever Ever for pre-orders with the title track Namanje as the lead single.

As such, after being able to clap back at the post by ESAM, the rapper was able to track up in the trends list. A fact that possibly brought more attention to his new single release than he would have gotten should he have chosen to ignore the salacious tweet and not garner the support he needed.

If this is the case, then it should go without saying that in order to prove the nay-sayers. More than just tweeting support of the rapper, streaming his new single would be a better way to show support for a rapper who is in need of a hit single to shut everyone up once and for all.
