The Queen actress Sibusiswe Jili adopts 2 poor families, buys groceries for them

Newly cast member of The Queen, actress Sibusiswe Jili, has adopted two underprivileged families in Joburg to assist them during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Jili, who has recently scored the role of a police officer and daughter of Patronella and Mjekejeke on the show, revealed that even though she was partially working during the lockdown, she had found time to assist those in need amid the increased number of coronavirus cases.

“With the recent outbreak of coronavirus, most of us don’t have permits, so we try to limit our movement. I go to the shops for supplies, then get some supplies for at least two families that I can drop off on my way back,” said Jili. The Queen actress Sibusiswe Jili adopts 2 poor families, buys groceries for them

“It’s not much and I don’t want to violate any law, but if I can just help another family, then I’ve done my part. I obviously don’t interact at close range, I knock, leave the parcel with a note, check whether they received, it then I leave.”

She confirmed that production has been halted for the duration of the lockdown, but occasionally she has to go to work for a meetings.

Sunday World tracked down the two families – the Mbele family in Cosmo City and the Mbatha family in Alexandra.

A representative from the Mbele family confirmed that the family have been receiving help from Jili since the end of last month.

Speaking anonymously for fear of stigma in the community, she said: “What she has done has helped us a lot because our reality is that even when we do need to go to the shops during the coronavirus lockdown, most of the stores are full to capacity or the shelves are empty.”

She said the parcels go a long way, especially since the actress advocates healthy eating.

“She brings food parcels with pap, rice, vegetables and meat. These are things I can’t even afford,” she said.

A representative from the Mbatha family, who also asked not be named, said: “This is the second week now, I chat to her on Whatsapp. She asks often if we are okay.”

The family of five, who share a one-room shack in Alexandra, explained that “this period has been one of the most scary times of our lives”.

“She has helped us so much that we now also have sanitisers for the corona and we talk about the cleanliness of the house. In the few weeks we have known her, she supports us in staying healthy by buying veggies and fruit and even multivitamins for the children,” she said.

Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate and his family have launched Mzansi’s first family radio show

Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate and his family have launched Mzansi's first family radio show

Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate and his family have launched the first Mzansi family radio show, The Mafokate Show.

The 2pm weekday show, which features his celebrity children AJ and Owami Mafokate, was launched on the family’s new radio station, Lockdown FM, on Wednesday.

AJ, real name Arthur Junior, became famous because of his career as DJ, while his younger sister, Owami, broke through the entertainment industry with the release of an amapiano track called Let’s get it on.

The Mnike hitmaker said the show is aimed at entertaining fans during the nationwide lockdown instead of people sitting at home wondering how to spend their day. The show can be listened to on www.lockdownfm.co.za.

The family shares how they tolerate each other while locked down in their home.

The father of four said it only took the family a week to redecorate one of the rooms into a studio and put together the equipment.

“The Mafokate Show is just about us being ourselves and getting in touch with the public out there. This show is hopefully not limited to the lockdown, but it depends on opportunities if available and, if not, it’s still cool,” he said.

He said the show was not aimed at grabbing attention from bigger radio stations as he was still teaching his children the effort needed for independence and tricks of building a solid foundation for their careers.

“All I am teaching them is that they must never wait to get a gig from someone but should create opportunities for themselves. Such an example is their father, who was rejected by almost everyone before he made it. We hope this show inspires and changes lives. People can just expect to know us and enjoy sharing space with us.”

Pilani Bubu speaks about her new album

Pilani Bubu speaks about her new albumSinger, songwriter and TV presenter, Pilani Bubu is a multifarious artist who has independently released three albums titled “Journey of the Heart”, “Warrior of Light” and the latest offering and newly launched “Folklore: Chapter 1” with radio singles such as “Boom Che” and “Baile”.

When did you start working on this album?

The project came about in 2015 when I was travelling back to New Orleans (US) for my yearly music trip. I wanted to capture more African Folk music .

I recorded a vocal demo of the music and shared it April of that year. Then the ideas lived on my soundcloud and website, as I looked for collaborators and a perfect opportunity to flesh them out. I started performing the music with my band and writing more songs like: “Boom Che” and “Baile”.

In 2018 I started recording, starting with the radio singles: Boom Che released in August on Women’s Month and in Baile in December of the same year, released during 16 days of Activism for violence against women and children – as the songs were written as my response to celebrating women and acting against domestic violence.

Pilani Bubu speaks about her new album

Later that year, the instrumentals were laid down for the songs and all that was left was for me and the bass artist and co-producer Bheka Mthethwa and I to lay the voices. In 2019, I then went into studio to start editing all the instrumental work, add some colour and all my voices on the project. And in November, I finally let go of my self-doubt and oohing and aah’ring and let it be shared with the world.

What were some of the things that inspired it?

From the time I released my first music project in 2012, I started doing solo shows while travelling. I added to my repertoire African folk songs because the people demanded it of me. Or they saw it in me and I had some to share.

I grew up being around traditional songs in my culture, what I had forgotten was how much I loved that music and how intelligent and rich it was. As I performed it, I fell more and more in love. I had to look within and look back…It was a beautiful inspired process of embracing my identity and sharing it with the world. It was like unearthing my blue print.

Before going into studio, did you know exactly what you wanted the end result to be and did you achieve that?

From the demo developed in 2015, till 2019, it was a 4 year organic period of allowing the music to grow within me and with my band members as we performed it.

It reconnected me with amazing roots musicians like Billy Monama who played most of the crucial guitars on the music and Bheka Mthethwa who understood the genre influences from his roots in KZN. My childhood experiences and their passion for the music really inspired the output.

Pilani Bubu speaks about her new album

How would you describe the sound of this album? Is it genre specific?

In broad terms, it is a contemporary folk-soul album. Deeply rooted in traditional folk music that we have evolved and interpreted into a fusion of other modern sounds like neo and acoustic soul, funk, blues and jazz.

What do you hope this album achieves for you?

The album is only the beginning or proof of concept (as I call it) of a bigger idea I am seeding and working on. The project “Folklore” is a community culture and heritage project where beyond the technology of music, I in collaboration with as many people as I can, will capture folkloric content in a documentary format as audio, visual, literature.

POSITIVE CASES FROM NETCARE ST AUGUSTINE’S HOSPITAL – DURBAN, KZN
We have received a report from KZN Health MEC, Ms Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu that KwaZulu-Natal has 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases linked to St Augustine’s Hospital, in Durban. Furthermore, 3 of the deceased patients from KZN had been admitted at the hospital.

The COVID-19 positive cases include patients, health workers and other staff members. The KZN Department of Health and Netcare management agreed that the affected sections of the hospital be closed and no new patient admissions be permitted. This is a precautionary measure to allow for a thorough identification of areas within the hospital where there may have been infection control lapses.

The areas that were exposed to positive patients are also being disinfected. At this stage, more than 150 tests have been conducted within the hospital and contact tracing is underway. We have advised that more tests be done on both staff and patients in order to determine the true extent of the existence of the infection in the facility, which may call for further interventions.

As part of intensifying the contact tracing and testing process, MEC Simelane-Zulu has also requested that Netcare avails a list of its patients that were exposed to the hospital as from the beginning of March.

We support this call and therefore make a public announcement that if you were a patient at St Augustine’s Hospital from 1 March 2020 to date, we request that you contact the KZN Department of Health.

We convey our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. We also thank the doctors, health workers and all staff members of this hospital for their commitment to serve even during these difficult times.

Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane has fully recovered from Covid-19 after being in quarantine for the past two weeks.

Molokwane had travelled to the United Kingdom and had several meetings with heads of various sports federations including the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa prior to her testing positive.

Molokwane has been in quarantine as per instructions by her medical doctor and has since gone back to retest.

The results came back on Saturday and Molokwane has now tested negative. She joins over 50 people in South Africa, who have recovered from the pandemic.

South Africa has 1 585 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Molokwane also confirmed that none of the persons she interacted with upon her return from the UK has tested positive.

“Following my results, both my Medical Doctor Sam Manthata and MEC for Health in Limpopo Dr. Phophi Ramathuba recommended that I be in quarantine for at least two weeks before I can retest again,” she said in a press release on Sunday morning.

Molokwane revealed that this has been a nightmare experience and urged everyone to take the virus serious.

“It is such an exhausting exercise however it’s worth it to be self-quarantined for my sake and the sake of those close to you. I have a 3-year-old daughter not being able to even give her a hug is a nightmare; one needs to be self-disciplined because the virus doesn’t move however people do,” she said.

“This virus is serious, and I see people not taking it seriously and it worries me, I will continue with my family to adhere to the precautions and the lockdown.

“To all those that were praying for me and those who never judges me and supported me a big thank you. Coronavirus knows no color, race, gender, religion whether rich or poor it will get you, so for us to safe the country please stay at home and be safe.”

From normal citizens to influencers and celebs such as Busiswa, social media has proven to be one of the best coping mechanisms.

Taking to Instagram, a fun yet vibrant Busiswa shared a video of her version of the #DontRushChallenge giving it more of that funky groove twist.

The challenge has been doing the most on the socials and had many people from different countries hop on to it.

It initially saw women lending each other make-up brushes and using the brushes to “magically” get themselves dolled up.

The challenge has escalated to different versions which have left many social media users in awe about how creative many people were outchea. Even Mihlali, Linda Mtoba and Thuso Mbedu joined the challenge.

Simphiwe Ngema bags role on SABC2 'Bone of my Bones'

Former Isidingo actress Simphiwe Ngema has been cast in the second season of SABC2 Bone of my Bones.

Just a few months after saying goodbye to her Isidingo role as Phindi, Ngema has now moved on.

Speaking to Sunday World, she said that she would be playing the role of Ruth on the popular series.

“She [Ruth] is a sweet girl who is hardworking but is not a pushover. She’s been through a lot in life but has never let anything get her down,” Ngema explained.

“I don’t think there were any challenges, for me, taking on a new character is like going on a new adventure. You do your research, discover new things about the character when you read the script and think of ways of how to best portray the character and make the story believable.”

Ngema will be playing alongside her former Isidingo colleague Motlatsi Mafatshe in this drama which is scheduled to air on Thursday.

She said that late last year she had gone for the audition and was called immediately after.

“I went to audition at Sothar pictures a while ago and I forgot about the audition. They called me in December and told me that we will start shooting soon,” said Ngema.

When asked if this role was in the pipeline when she found out about the discontinuation of Isidingo, she said: “Not at all. My plans after finding out about Isidingo were to concentrate on my other work, you hardly have time to do other things when you are shooting a soapie and I’ve been putting a lot of things on hold because I just didn’t have the time.”

Among the things she said she did not have the time for while shooting for the canned SABC3 soapie was trying to acquire a home.

Ngema is the young widow of slain actor Dumi Masilela. On her social media pages she revealed that she recently bought her first home since the death of her husband.

“Lerato Mtolo [co-founder of ladies night] and I have events called Ladies Night and we speak about challenges that affect young widows, divorcees and single women. I discovered that a lot of young women go through a lot but are afraid to share their stories because of the fear of being judged.

“I shared my story to inspire other young women that have gone through what I’ve been through and to let them know that they too can make it.”

• Bone of my Bones will air on SABC2 on April 9 at 9.30pm.
