Viewers Look Back At Skeem Saam Season One

13 October 2020 – the very first time Mzansi was introduced to Kwaito Seakamela, T-bose Maputla, Pretty Seakamela, MaNtuli, John Maputla, Meikie Maputla and many other characters that they’ve grown to love or hate (depending on their storylines) on Skeem Saam.

The award-winning SABC1 drama series has grown so much over the past 10 years and so have the characters. From airing on Thursday nights at 8:30PM for an hour to moving to the Mon-Fri 6:30PM timeslot. Do you remember how young Kwaito and T-bose were when they stole John Maputla’s car to go to a party and ended up causing an accident which opened up a large can of worms? It was that car accident that brought about the animosity among the Kunutus and the Seakamelas together with the Maputlas.

On that day, T-bose, played by Cornet Mamabolo and Kwaito, played by Clement Maosa, killed a man. That man was Mr Kunutu (Rachel’s father, Celia Kunutu’s husband)

Viewers of the soapie, which is set in both Johannesburg and Turfloop in Limpopo, decided to take a trip down memory lane with some old clips of the show. Twitter user @hlahlo_ was the one behind the throwback, and it brought back fond memories for many avid viewers who have been following the show since day one.

Fans of the show could not believe just how young Kwaito, T-bose and Pretty young. Now, all three of them are married or engaged to their respective partners off-screen and both Kwaito and T-bose are fathers too. Other viewers could not believe that Meikie is still wearing the same type of wigs.

This is how viewers reacted to the throwback:

“I remember an ex introduced me to Skeem saam when it was shown Thursday night, it’s been a good ride.”

“Can’t believe I watched Kwaito and T Bose from high school to university while I ddnt have any changes in my life.”

“I need someone that’s as loyal to me the way Meikie is to her wig and Leeto with his ringtone.”

One viewer, however, made an interesting observation about John Maputla scolding Leeto for having rebellious friends such as ‘Baby Maker’ which was played by Bongani Masondo at the time.

“The irony of John Maputla scoffing at the nickname β€˜Babymaker’!! Kante le ena he was one in his heydays!!” the tweep wrote.

If you’re following the show currently, you know just how heated things are. The current storyline that has viewers at the edge of their seats and Skeem Saam trending every evening. It revolves around Kwaito finally finding out who his father is. For years, he had no idea who his father is and no his mother, MaNtuli and John Maputla’s secret is out.

It is definitely going to be interesting to observe how the relationship dynamics will change now that long-time friends Kwaito and T-bose are actually brothers. Another interesting relationship dynamic will be that of MaNtuli and Meikie, who are also besties.
