The recent funeral service for Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule at the Durban International Conference Centre was nothing short of a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable woman. Described by mourners with words like “beautiful,” “kind,” and “intelligent,” Zanele, who was just 52 years old, lost her battle with lung cancer earlier this week. As colleagues, family, and friends gathered to bid farewell, the atmosphere was filled with both sorrow and celebration, adorned in white and decorated with white roses—a fitting tribute to a life that inspired many, according to ZiMoja.

Zanele was a multifaceted individual, known not only as a broadcaster and businesswoman but also as an author and mother. Her dedication to uplifting others was evident through her initiatives, such as the Crown Gospel Awards, which she founded to celebrate gospel music and artists. During the service, her cousin Weh Harris shared insightful reflections on their family lineage, highlighting their roots that reportedly trace back to Mozambique and Zanzibar. “Zanele was beautiful, she got her beauty and intellect from the Harris family,” he stated, reinforcing her legacy of elegance and intelligence.

Weh poignantly spoke about the family’s struggle with cancer, revealing that Zanele was diagnosed in the final stages of her illness. In his heartfelt remarks, he recalled how the family preferred not to speak of cancer at home, having seen its devastating impact. “We pray that it doesn’t take any more of our family members,” he urged, invoking a sense of solidarity and hope. He expressed gratitude to Zanele’s husband, Bishop Nkambule, for openly sharing her diagnosis, allowing many to offer their love and support during her difficult times. “She felt the love and support in her last days,” Weh emphasized, shedding light on the importance of community during such challenging periods.

The service featured moving tributes, including a powerful song by multi-Crown Gospel award winner Dumi Mkokstad, adding an emotional layer to the occasion. Programme director Siya Mhlongo, who worked closely with Zanele, reminisced about her efforts to bring international gospel acts to South Africa, noting that her influence was felt far and wide. He shared humorous anecdotes that reflected her vibrant personality, illustrating that beneath her sweetness lay a strong and determined spirit. “Zanele would tell you where to get off,” he smiled, capturing her fierce determination alongside her gentle nature.

The Roman Catholic Church, where Zanele worshiped during her upbringing, echoed sentiments of her selflessness. They acknowledged her commitment to empowering people without the need for titles, stating, “Her obsession was not about titles but how to better help and care for other people.” This perspective demonstrates a core part of Zanele’s legacy—the belief in treating everyone equally, regardless of their social or economic status.

As mourners left the Durban International Conference Centre, they carried with them the memory of a woman who dedicated her life to enriching the lives of those around her. Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule will be remembered not just for her achievements but for her indelible impact on the lives she touched. The passing of beloved Ukhozi FM presenter, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, has sparked a bitter feud between two prominent traditional healers, Bhaka “King Bhaka” Nzama and Dr Khehlelezi. The controversy stems from Dr Khehlelezi’s prophecy that two Ukhozi FM presenters would die this year, a prediction made after Zanele’s public lung cancer diagnosis in May.

Bhaka Nzama, a Durban-based inyanga, known for his short-lived relationship with singer Kelly Khumalo, has accused Dr Khehlelezi of opportunism, claiming he used publicly available information to masquerade it as prophecy.

“Dr Khehlelezi made the prophecy when it was already public knowledge that Zanele had been diagnosed with lung cancer,” Bhaka said. “He’s using this tragic situation for his own gain.”

Bhaka, who rose to fame after his relationship with Kelly Khumalo became public in 2015, has urged people to keep their illnesses secret to avoid such opportunist prophets.

“Zanele’s family was honest in telling the nation about her condition, not knowing that opportunists would use it to claim they are prophesying,” he added. “It’s a violation of the doctor-patient, or inyanga-patient confidentiality, meant to avoid those who claim they prophesied from having assurance.”

Bhaka further emphasized the importance of respecting a patient’s privacy, especially during a difficult time like battling cancer.

“Everyone knows that cancer is dangerous, but no one is allowed to tell a cancer patient that they are going to die,” he said. “Even doctors, who previously told people how long they would live with cancer, are not allowed to do so because it puts pressure on the patient.”

He questioned the validity of Dr Khehlelezi’s prophecy, pointing out that other presenters at Ukhozi FM are not dying. “When the nation was informed that Zanele was ill, everyone was supposed to support her and the family, not spread fake prophecies,” Bhaka said. “When Zanele was discharged from the hospital, she said she had heard about the fake prophecies.”

Dr Khehlelezi, whose real name is not mentioned, has declined to comment on the accusations, stating he doesn’t want to engage in anything related to Bhaka.

Bhaka Nzama, who gained notoriety for his tumultuous relationship with Kelly Khumalo, was allegedly assaulted by the singer in 2015 after he refused to leave his wife for her. The incident, which occurred at a hotel before the Metro FM Awards, involved Kelly Khumalo throwing a punch at Bhaka, injuring his eye.

Despite Kelly Khumalo’s denial of the relationship, the pair were spotted together on numerous occasions in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal. Their romantic rendezvous took a turn for the worse when witnesses observed them arguing, with Bhaka confirming that Kelly Khumalo had indeed assaulted him.

The incident, which mirrored the events leading to the tragic death of Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot dead at Kelly Khumalo’s family home, fuelled speculation about the singer’s tumultuous relationships.

The bishop – who was accompanied by the isiZulu radio station’s business manager, Sbongi Ngcobo – thanked everyone for their prayers thus far and asked that they continue to pray for Mbokazi’s healing.

He further asked for privacy, on behalf of the Mbokazi and Nkambule families, and requested that listeners and supporters refrain from making speculations about his wife’s health. Mbokazi, who is the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards, was hospitalised last week after losing her voice straight after her Sunday show. She hosts Ukhozi FM’s gospel morning show, Eshilo, every Sunday between 09:00 and 12:00.

On Sunday, 21 April, Mbokazi could not finish her show as she lost her breath and voice. Her colleague, Thokozani MaMkhize Ndlovu, had to fill in for her.

“Zanele has been unwell since Sunday, 21 April. She was unable to host her show, and MaMkhize Ndlovu filled in for her. She experienced severe pains but felt better by Friday, 26 April, and even attended an event in Pietermaritzburg. However, upon returning to work on Sunday, the illness struck again, but fortunately, she managed to complete her show despite the struggle,” said Mbokazi’s spokesperson, Nonjabulo Mdluli.

“Zanele is receiving treatment in the hospital and her condition is improving. We urge people to continue praying for her,” she added. While it was reported that she had the flu at first, Mbokazi opened up about her illness on Facebook last week.

“Wow! I fell so ill this morning. The truth is that I don’t have the flu. From last Sunday, I have been battling isbhobo [sharp cramps often on the upper body] and voicelessness.

“Today [Sunday] I came to work because I felt better, the cramps were gone and my voice was back, but it started all over again,” she wrote and asked for prayers. A few days later, she revealed to her Facebook followers that her surgery had gone well.

“Thank you to all the pastors, artists and friends who sent through prayers and flowers. Thank you as well to my Eshilo family for your prayers and messages of support on this page. My in-laws in Swaziland, thank you for the love. The theatre procedure went well. Now managing the pain,” she wrote.
