Why Robert Marawa was fired

Award-winning sportscaster Robert Marawa presented his show #MSW for the last three months as if his life depended on it, but deep down he knew his days at the SABC were numbered as his contract would not be renewed when it expired at the end of last month.

Ironically, a few hours after the SABC announced his departure in a statement, Marawa scooped Best Sports Show of the Year at the SA Radio Awards.

We have learnt Marawa could be replaced by Udo Carelse on Radio 2000 while Metro FM is still looking for a replacement.

A top executive at the SABC said the initial plan was to move Thabiso Mosia from SAFM to Radio 2000, but the acting station manager thwarted the move arguing they could not lose Mosia, especially after talk show host Phemelo Motene left.

“Owen Hannie [a sports presenter on Metro FM] has come out strongly as the potential candidate to anchor the show on Metro FM,” the source said.

The source claimed that Marawa had again fallen victim to political interference and a power struggle within the public broadcaster. According to another source, the SABC cited the financial quagmire it was facing as one of the reasons it was not renewing Marawa’s contract.

“They brought the issue of Section 189 that got many employees retrenched,” said the source.

The source also claimed that before the decision was taken the management team, which includes the head of radio, the acting station manager and their programmes managers met to discuss Marawa’s show. They argued that it cost the SABC R22 000 a day and more than R5 million annually to pay Marawa, a content producer, two technical producers, and person who does promos, according to an insider. “All the expenses are put on Robert’s shoulders. It was also argued that the show has never broken even because it only brings in just over R2 million,” the source said.

However, Marawa dismissed these claims saying he only had three team members. “Nothing was ever communicated to me about anything. #MSW [Marawa Sports Worldwide] brought them an audience and revenue and we were a small team of three people … So they shouldn’t lie about us costing them [a lot of money] … they have a sales department for that,” Marawa said.

He confirmed to the publications that he was told three months ago that his contract would not be renewed. “But I continued doing a professional job until the end! They decided to send out a one-sided press statement [about me leaving]. Then when they saw the [public] backlash they canned my last show three hours before going on air! What were they afraid of?”

A third source, who claimed he tried to defend Marawa’s show during the heated meeting when all the shows were being reviewed early this year, said the decision had nothing to do with financial difficulties the SABC faced but “a personal vendetta from politicians and certain top individuals at the SABC”.

“If you remember, when Robert left back in 2017, Udo Carelse and Andile Ncube took over as sports presenters at the two radio stations and were paid a combined salary R4 000 more than what Robert is being paid now.

“And if you add their producers’ salaries, it’s the same amount that Robert’s team is getting if not more. The difference is, the presenters who replaced him caused the listenership to drop dramatically and the reappointment of Robert in 2019 brought the numbers up again,” claimed the source.

Before the dramatic end of the day on Friday, the SABC released a statement announcing the departure of Marawa and Morning Live sports presenter Vaylen Kirtley.

Marawa took to social media to show the SMS which told him not to bother reporting for duty for his last show on Friday night.

DRAMA: Robert Marawa speaks out after he was allegedly fired via SMS

As has been his character when his relationship has turned sour with the SABC‚ outspoken sports presenter Robert Marawa has not gone quietly after a second sacking from the public broadcaster in four years.

The news of Marawa’s “departure” was broken in a statement by the SABC on Friday that the hugely popular host of Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW) would part ways with the public broadcaster. Later on Friday Marawa did not hesitate to share a screenshot of the “SMS” he said was the mode of communication that fired him.

In another dramatic turn‚ Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW) won the category for Best Sports Show: Commercial at the SA Radio Awards on Friday‚ on the same day Marawa was fired.

Marawa tweeted on Thursday that he was fired by SMS. His tweet was accompanied by an alleged screenshot of an SMS or WhatsApp message he received from a person identified as “Kina”‚ who apparently is Kina Nhlengethwa‚ whose LinkedIn profile states she is acting station manager at SAfm Radio.

Marawa tweeted: “So after serving the public broadcaster through time‚ I am sent yet another text from a person in an ‘acting’ position informing me of this.

“Same modus operandi as SS [pay-channel SuperSport].

“What do they fear about the last Show??

“Thank you Mzansi for the love & support thru the years. #MSW.”

The alleged screenshot of the SMS or WhatsApp message by Nhlengethwa states: “Hi Robert. The reason for my call earlier on was to firstly inform you about the press release that was going to go out earlier on.

“The second one was to inform you that you need not come in for the show today as there will be no MSW broadcast show tonight. Thank you.”

The SABC had announced Marawa’s departure‚ along with that of Morning Live TV sports presenter Vaylen Kirtley‚ in a statement on Friday.

The statement read: “The SABC would like to announce the departure of renowned sports broadcasters Mr Robert Marawa and Ms Vaylen Kirtley.

“Robert Marawa departs following the conclusion of the MSW (Marawa Sport Worldwide)‚ which Marawa presented on both METRO FM and Radio 2000 simultaneously.”

Marawa has had a chequered relationship with the SABC. He was fired from Metro FM in 2017 when he refused to return to his show in solidarity with his producer Beverly Maphangwa‚ who had been fired earlier. Marawa was reinstated by popular demand and tremendous public pressure.

Marawa was controversially fired by SuperSport as a TV sports anchor in 2019.

The SABC’s head of sport‚ Gary Rathbone‚ could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sports presenter Robert Marawa battles for life in ICU

Sports presenter Robert Marawa has survived a Covid-19 scare after he spent one week in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The sports presenter has warned Mzansi to take Covid-19 seriously and follow all Covid-19 protocols and do everything to avoid catching the virus.

“Covid-19 is real and it’s something that my family and I have been dealing with. I, along with many South Africans have lost loved ones and dear colleagues to this virus. As I now make my way to full recovery, I would like to warn anyone out there who is still taking this global pandemic lightly,” said Marawa.

The veteran broadcaster said he started having some flu-like symptoms and quickly ran a test and he found out that he was positive to Covid-19.

He then isolated himself but on day eight the virus started taking a toll on his body.

“What started as a flu-like symptom we have all been warned about quickly led to a fulminant debilitating inexplicable fatigue without shortness of breath on day 8 of my diagnosis. The doctor’s friend advised me to get an electronic device that measures pulse and blood oxygen concentration. When the oxygen concentration dropped to 92, hospital admission was arranged via an x-ray to establish lung condition,” said Marawa.

He said it was when he was taken to ICU for one week and was released into a general ward where he spent two days before he was released.

The Metro FM, Marawa Sports World Wide show host thanked the medical professionals whom he said worked “tirelessly to revive my health”.

The broadcaster said he wrestled in his mind on whether to share his story or not but realised that it could help someone if he speaks about it.

“The coronavirus is vicious on the body, it is a tough battle and I encourage you to take care of yourself and your loved ones by following all protocols put in place to assist in decreasing the spread of Covid-19 and even more so to seek medical attention sooner than later,” he said.

Some of his Twitter followers congratulated him for beating Covid-19 and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Thank God Madluphuthu you are alive I had experienced the same type of COVID-19 for 49 days between hospital and my bed. God loves you and great that you had a supportive family. We are looking forward to hearing your honest voice and wisdom in football,” said one Nhlanhla.
