Jackson Mthembu’s wife Thembi has died

Thembi Mthembu, the wife of the late ANC heavyweight Jackson Mthembu, died early on Thursday after a short illness.

A top government official told the publication that Thembi never fully recovered from the passing of her husband.

Mthembu, the former minister in the Presidency, succumbed to Covid-19-related complications at a Johannesburg hospital in January 2021. He was 62 at the time of his death.

“When he died, he took a huge chunk of her. After losing Jackson, she was heartbroken. She missed her husband every day,” said the source, adding that stress might have been a big factor.

His passing was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa this afternoon on Twitter and he conveyed his condolences to his family.

“It is with deep sorrow and shock that we announce that Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu passed away earlier today from Covid-related complications. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of loss,” he wrote on Twitter.

The minister’s passing mark yet another loss in the political fraternity this month following the passing of KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison, Bheki Ntuli. Jackson Mphikwa Mthembu brought into the world on fifth June 1958 was a South African legislator who filled in as Minister in the Presidency of South Africa’s administration, and as a parliamentarian for the African National Congress (ANC).
