Chadwick Boseman’s widow speaks out on challenging time

Chadwick Boseman‘s widow has admitted the last two years have been “challenging. Simone Ledward Boseman sat down for her first formal interview since the ‘Black Panther’ actor died following a secret four-year battle with colon cancer in August 2020, and she explained her late spouse’s health began to “spiral” during the Covid-19 pandemic. Appearing on ‘Good Morning America’, she said: “It has been the most challenging two years I’ve ever had in my life.

“It was Covid, when things were really starting to spiral. And that meant that everybody was in their house, and there was no pressure for anybody to go outside. It seemed like, ‘Is this a crazy coincidence that we get to actually be inside, that we get to be here with family – together?

“And everybody in the world is also experiencing this togetherness in the midst of this awful, scary, unpredictable time?’ We kept that circle real – our circle was basically a dot. Simone admitted she has a lot of ups and downs in her grief.

She said: “Some days, I’m doing worse than I’m really willing to acknowledge. Other days, I’m doing better than I feel comfortable admitting.”

But above all else, she will always feel “lucky” to have had Chadwick – who she met in 2014 and married before he passed away – in her life for even a short time.

The “Get On Up” actor’s legacy lives on in the form of a scholarship created in his name at his former college, Howard University – which has renamed its fine arts department in honour of the late star – and Simone is very “proud” of the students.

She said: “We have four scholars. One of them graduated this past year and was very proud to be the first graduating Boseman scholar of the first graduating class of the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts. We are taking this mantle, and we are carrying it to as many voices as we can.

Chadwick Boseman’s death left gaping hole in Black Panther 2 filming

Chadwick Boseman‘s death left “a gaping hole” on the set of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Winston Duke, who reprises his role as warrior M’Baku in the upcoming sequel, appeared alongside the late actor in the original 2018 movie, and it was difficult returning to the set for the first time since Boseman died in 2020 after a secret four-year cancer battle.

Speaking on the “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered” podcast, he said: “That is something that we have to wrestle with daily on set because there was a gaping hole when it came to his presence. You felt it daily. You felt him not being there. He was a very gentle presence of strength, power, and scope

Winston recalled how the late actor didn’t have a “big ego” on set, and that the “impact” he had on the movie was felt long after his death. He added: “You knew he was there, but he didn’t have to say anything. He wasn’t walking around with a big ego.

“You don’t realise the impact when they’re there. But when they’re not, it’s apparent. You feel it intrinsically and that was the experience on set daily for a year

His comments come after director Ryan Coogler recently described “Wakanda Forever” as having “the fog of loss over it”. He explained: “I think this film has the fog of loss over it, and anamorphic lenses warp the image a little bit.

“Sometimes when you go through profound loss, it can warp how you look at the world. What we were after was just making it feel tactile, even though it felt like a dream.

The trailer of Chadwick Boseman’s last movie he worked on with alongside Viola Davis has been released.

Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (played by Viola).

Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music.

As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (played by Chadwick) — who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry – spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.
Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let society’s prejudices dictate their worth.

Directed by George C. Wolfe and adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black.

Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige and Dusan Brown also star in the movie.

Chadwick Boseman was ready to die and asked his pastor brother to help him “get out of the game” the night before he died.

The “Black Panther” actor died in August following a four-year battle with colon cancer and his brother, Pastor Derrick Boseman, revealed their final conversation the night before his younger sibling passed caused him to change his prayers for his sick relative.

In the conversation, Chadwick told his brother: “Man, I’m in the fourth quarter, and I need you to get me out of the game.”

Derrick asked his brother what he meant, then realised he was tired and ready to go.
He added in an interview with the New York Times newspaper: “When he told me that, I changed my prayer from, ‘God heal him, God save him,’ to ‘God, let your will be done.’ And the next day he passed away.”

Throughout Chadwick’s illness, he had had prayer calls with his family and always said “Hallelujah”, no matter how he was feeling.

Derrick said: “He never stopped saying it.”

The “21 Bridges” star’s loved ones admitted it has been difficult sharing their brother with the world during their grief.

His brother Kevin said: “I have been trying to remember Chad and not Chadwick. And there’s just been a lot of Chadwick in the air…

“[When someone gets famous] you have to start sharing that person with the world; I always endeavoured to just treat him like my brother.”
The pastor hailed his younger brother as an “inspiration” for others thanks to his humble upbringing in the small town of Anderson in South Carolina.

Derrick said: “Him being born there is an inspiration that you can come from there and become anything.

“Chad was gifted. “He’s probably the most gifted person I’ve ever met.”

And while their father Leroy encouraged his kids to do their best, he insisted he never pushed Chadwick into his career.

He said: “A lot of people think making it means becoming an A-list movie star. I didn’t force that. I just knew that if Chad wanted to work in the arts, he would find a way and take care of himself.”

Kevin added: “He always did his best. His best was incredible.”
