It took a romcom called Entangled to get actress and businesswoman Phuti Khomo to drop everything and come back to TV.

She has been away from the limelight for four years and her last TV appearance was on popular SABC2 soapie Muvhango.

“When I left I was like ‘do I wanna go back to TV and do the same thing’ and then I was like ‘nah actually now I have the time to focus on my businesses and do what I’ve always wanted to do.’ Thought this was just gonna take a year or two and it took longer but this was the break that I needed.”

Entangled is a sizzling 13-part romantic comedy drama that aired on 1 Magic last Friday. Phuti plays Sharon who’s an over-achiever, a trait that Phuti has in real life.

Phuti told TshisaLIVE she had always wanted to be part of a show that went against the grain of what was ‘normal’. She suspects the show will get tongues wagging.

“The show is a bit daring because it has all the s*x and nudity. It is raunchy but you know what I’ve always dreamed of being part of productions that can be forward like that because come to think of it when you are sitting at home what are the shows that you are watching?

“You are watching shows like Being Mary Jane, you are bingeing on shows that have that, all the time, but when it comes to South African shows we are always restricted by morality and culture.”

The model and entrepreneur said it was frustrating because Mzansi has talent.

“We have so many talented actors who are more than capable to produce international quality stuff but we never get the network that’s willing to give them that. I was astonished that’s why I had to jump in and I wanted it so bad because this is the first time this is happening in SA where a network says OK to a South African production like this.”

Phuti said the production company behind the romcom, Burnt Onion, called her up when they were doing auditions for the character of Sharon. She auditioned and the rest like the saying goes was history.

“They called me back, and we did it live and it was amazing and channel also loved it, and they said I haven’t been on screen for a while and people would love me. They will be excited, so that’s how I got the part.”

Phuti said she wanted to come back to something that was worth her while and when she returned to set, she realised she had missed filming.

“I didn’t wanna come to the same old, same old, if I came back it had to be worth it. I hadn’t read the script when I first auditioned, I hadn’t done anything, but I trusted the production company and the way the show was explained to me and how the team is full of forward-thinking people. I was told it was gonna be breaking new ground. Once I understood what it was about I started wanting it more.”

Former Muvhango actress Phuti Khomo was reduced to tears when her man surprised her with a truck for her birthday.

In a video shared on Instagram, the actress was driven out to an unknown location wearing a blindfold.

When Phuti reached the location she was confused as the truck she owns was parked there. A few minutes later a second truck decked out with balloons pulled up next to hers, and it was revealed her man had surprised her with a new truck for her business.

“To have someone love you enough to support you in every way, including your dreams, is very rare. I honestly never thought he would actually do it. He knew I needed another truck, and I kept asking for one of his, to which he kept saying, ‘Maybe God will bless you one day’. Little did I know God was already working in my favour as I was asking,” she said of the moment.

Phuti went on to thank everyone involved in making the surprise so memorable.

“Thank you baby, you genuinely have my best interests at heart. I love you for that. You have my heart,” she said.

A visibly annoyed Phuti took to her Instagram to make it clear that the flood of “solutions” on how to deal with “problematic” features on her body were definitely not welcome.

Phuti was not impressed by their comments that she shouldn’t wear a crop top because of how her stomach apparently looks.

“So like, I’ve been receiving a lot of DMs and I think I just wanna talk about these DMs. I’m not sure but does it look like I have a stomach problem? I don’t think so. I don’t believe so,” Phuti asked before adding, “I have people in my DMs saying I have problems and maybe I shouldn’t wear something like a crop top … OK, let me tell you something, first of all, I can wear whatever I want to wear as long as I feel comfortable in it, it’s none of your business!

“I’m a 36-year-old woman, I think I know how to dress myself and what looks good on me … So don’t be creeping up in my DMs trying to tell me that I can wear a crop top or I can’t wear a crop top — I will wear whatever I damn well please, “Phuti said.

Phuti is no stranger to calling people or even the whole industry out.

Two years ago, the model-turned-actress called out the model industry and warned young models and actresses against exploitation, saying the industry is filled with scammers and people who take advantage of others.

In an interview with Metro FM Phuti explained that she had been focusing her energy on her modelling expo where she was providing a platform for modelling agencies around the world to come and scout local talent.

She explained that she wanted to get into that space to provide a credible channel for models to get into the industry without the BS that comes with it.

“This industry is full of chancers. It is full of people who will take advantage of people and exploit them. I will not exploit people because I have a lot to lose. This is like years of building my name and I am putting it on something. I am going for a cause here. There are so many things that are happening in their modelling space: human trafficking, child pornography. Children are falling into these traps.”
