She wants to kill me – Moneoa Moshesh-Sowazi’s ex-boyfriend opens can of worms

Afrobeats musician Moneoa Moshesh-Sowazi’s ex-boyfriend, businessperson Phiwe Maphanga, has allegedly contacted the star to engage in settlement talks in an effort to have her drop a case that she opened against him.

However, the star is adamant that she wants her BMW back and that Maphanga must pay off the debts he left her with, which amount to about R500 000.

Moshesh-Sowazi opened a case of motor vehicle theft under false pretence at the Norwood Police Station in Johannesburg two weeks ago.

On Friday, she alleged that Maphanga, who obtained a protection order against her a fortnight ago, had contacted her through her friend to tell her that he wanted to settle the matter out of court.

She said:
Phiwe’s friend approached my friend, saying that they want to settle. He did not speak to me directly … I am not sure if it was another one of his ploys to get me to drop the case or keep quiet. I don’t know what he is doing, but he still has not returned my car and I don’t know why he is refusing to.

The conversation between the two friends is said to have happened last week.

The musician believed that Maphanga was no longer in possession of the vehicle.

“I just want my car back. It’s not nice not having my car. I highly suspect that he sold my car illegally, and whatever money he made with it laid the foundation for the lifestyle that he is currently living.

“Phiwe likes to undermine me as some struggling singer, and that is what his sister said to me. But I believe that, even with my struggling career, my car laid the foundation for whatever lifestyle he is living today, otherwise where is it?
Where is my car? He has been taking me on a wild goose chase for the past five years and now he is blatantly denying it.

Maphanga allegedly took the car and said that he was going to fix it.

He denied trying to contact the musician. “I am not aware of any settlement. I have not instructed anyone to speak about this,” he said.

Moshesh-Sowazi said she was frustrated by the process. “This is beyond frustrating because I worked hard for my things. I did not grow up rich and never claimed to be rich, but I am working towards not struggling. So, I spent 11 years of my career working hard to meet some guy who turned everything upside down.”

She said Maphanga had not only left her in debt, but also physically, emotionally and spiritually drained.

The businessperson opened a case of intimidation, extortion and defamation of character against Moshesh-Sowazi at the Sandton Police Station two weeks ago.

He also obtained an interim protection order against her after she alleged on her social media platforms that he had scammed and abused her.

In an affidavit for his application of an interim protection order, Maphanga claimed that the posts made by the musician did not only affect him, but also had a negative impact on the lives of his wife, mother and sister.

He claimed that he had been receiving death threats.

He wrote:
As a newlywed and a man with a newborn baby, I feel extremely vulnerable as I am uncertain of the extent to which the threats could be acted upon. I have been giving her money throughout the course of our breakup as she would claim that if I don’t give her money, she would ensure I am in harm’s way

At the time, Moshesh-Sowazi’s lawyer, Buang Jones, said the musician had opened a case of intimidation against two police officers who called her to the Sandton Police Station and asked that she delete her posts about the businessperson
