Gomora Actor Loses Battle With Cancer

Veteran South African actor David Butler has reportedly passed on at the age of 61. David was said to battling cancer and he sadly succumbed to it on Thursday.

The late David Butler was reportedly diagnosed with cancer in December 2020. To help with his medical expenses a Facebook page called ‘BackABuddy’ was created. The same page announced his death saying he passed away peacefully on Thursday morning.

“Our beloved father, son, brother, grandfather and friend, David passed away peacefully this morning at around 10.30am. He was surrounded by family in a room filled with love. Although he had been ill, it is still, as is always the case, a huge shock. Nothing prepares one. We take comfort that David is reunited with his beautiful son,” the statement reads. “We respectfully ask that the family are given space to process their loss. We will share with you the details of any arrangements as they unfold.”

In his fight with the disease, David was set to begin a new drug trial. This was also announced by the page in May 6, in a separate post. “Two week’s ago David’s oxygen levels were low, he had an infection, and he was admitted to hospital. He is now back home and receiving excellent care.

“We are hoping that he will start a new drug trial on Monday, but, as we have learned, nothing is a given … except of course that we love him, that David’s bravery and courage inspires us all, and we are, as always, grateful that he has so many people who care about him,” the statement reads.

Messages of condolences began to flood with people wishing him a peaceful rest:

“What a special, delightful and lovely man.. May he RIP – Condolences love and strength to his family and all his friends – he will be sorely missed.

“My deepest condolences at this incredibly sad time. Our time together at drama school is imprinted on my memory forever.

“Such a huge loss. I will miss him greatly. Sending love and strength and courage to Laine, Annie, Ruby, Roz, Craig and Kate.

“Our love to you all. We are just so terribly sad that David’s journey here on this earth had to come to an end. May his light guide you through the dark and his love be a balm for your broken hearts. Rest gently David. Love the Barbuzanos.

David Butler has an impressive catalogue in his name. from acting on theatre stages both nationally and internationally, to bringing the heat on our local productions. These include Generations, his most famous role on Binnelanders and his most recent being the hit Mzansi Magic show Gomora.
