From failing matric to becoming a commercial agricultural businesswoman at 25

From failing matric to becoming a commercial agricultural businesswoman at 25

For 25-year-old commercial agricultural businesswoman Siphesihle Kwetana, entering the agriculture industry seemed both far-fetched and unattainable when she didn’t pass her matric exams.
Born in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape, Siphesihle didn’t have any intention of starting her own business in agriculture, but a chance encounter and hard work put the wheels of destiny in motion.

Speaking to DRUM, Siphesihle tells her story of success.

“After I failed matric, I told myself I couldn’t just sit at home doing nothing. I opened a small restaurant where I also cooked, and that is when I noticed a lack of vegetables at our local supermarkets. I always bought my vegetables from there and if they didn’t have stock, this meant I wasn’t able to cook.”

When she spoke to the owners of these supermarkets, she was told that it wasn’t easy for them to always have stock. What stuck with her was the fact that they had to get the vegetables from other provinces, which cost more and took longer.

“That was the first time the idea of being involved in agriculture came to mind,” Kwetana explains.

Little did she know, that would be the beginning of her struggles as a young woman in an industry that is dominated by old – and usually white – men.

“You need to understand that I was about to enter a space that didn’t welcome people like myself. I was undermined by big corporate companies because I was young, and I didn’t have a registered company yet. I was 19 years old at the time,” she says.

“These corporate companies weren’t looking for local farmers and all of them told me I would not be able to meet their demands. I knew that if I was given the opportunity, I would be able to meet those demands but at the time, I wasn’t.

“After my unsuccessful attempts, I decided to send my husband and only then did some places accept what I had to offer,” she explains.

The following year, in 2014, Siphesihle started the Siphe Development and Capacitation Agency, which she co-owns with her husband. This would later help her with supplying local supermarkets with vegetables and help with receiving recognition.

“The work I do with my company has led me to receiving many awards. Although I haven’t received my prize money from a lot of these departments, I have managed to build my foundation with the money that I have made.

“I fixed the broken pumps that were going to be a factor in hindering the growth of the company. I extended my workers’ houses and built spaces for those who lived far, closer to the farm. Before I was able to build my offices on my farm, I was renting an office space in town.”

Even though she now has 20 employees, owns two farms in Mthatha and grows crops for the likes of Pick n Pay and Food Lover’s Market in four towns, Siphesihle still has bigger plans.

“I would like to start my own nursery. I have already made a start, with having three tunnels. I just need funding to finish it off. We, agriculturalists, work with time. It is easier to have everything of yours in one place in order to make the distribution process faster,” the business owner says.

Having achieved so much at such a young age, Siphesihle wants people to know that it isn’t easy, especially for young women like her, to take up space historically not meant for them.

“You need to trust yourself if you want to make it in this field of work. You need to tell yourself that everything is going to work out no matter how many times you’re told it’s not going to.”

“THERE IS NO COMPLETE HEALING”- UYINENE’S FAMILY SUES POST OFFICE

"THERE IS NO COMPLETE HEALING"- UYINENE'S FAMILY SUES POST OFFICE

Every time a woman is murdered, Uyinene Mrwetyana’s grieving family relive her grisly death at the hands of an employee of the SA Post Office, which they are now suing.

“I don’t know what it would take for our country to change, I really don’t know,” family spokesperson Thembelani Mrwetyana told News24.

Every time they open a newspaper and read about another murder, they are reminded of what happened to Uyinene, who was raped and beaten to death in the Claireinch Post Office in Cape Town last year when she went to collect a parcel.

The University of Cape Town student’s mother, Noma, copes by throwing herself into building up the foundation established in her daughter’s name, and is trying to raise funds to support victims of gender-based violence.

But there are days when the family simply cannot cope with their grief.

Due dilligence

They are convinced the post office should have done due diligence when it employed Luyanda Botha who had a history of run-ins with the law.

This includes a conviction relating to a 1998 carjacking for which he received an eight-year sentence of which five were served and three suspended. According to the police, he also had an attempted rape case laid against him which was subsequently withdrawn.

“They decided to employ him nevertheless,” said Mrwetyana.

Lawyers have started legal proceedings against the post office to establish whether it should be held liable for her death because not only did they employ him, but she was killed on its premises.

The family hopes to set a precedent for other companies to do due diligence too.

When Uyinene was murdered, her death compounded national fears over gender-based violence, and massive protests were held throughout the country.

It is cold comfort to them that Botha is in jail and the family wants to make sure that what happened to Uyinene does not happen to anybody else.

Healing

“We are taking it day by day, really. But there is no complete healing,” said Mrwetyana when asked how the family was coping.

He added they were ready for a long and protracted legal process, but felt it had to be done.

“Someone died here, unnecessarily so, and someone must answer,” said Mrwetyana.

The post office’s acting CEO, Ivumile Nongogo, confirmed it had received a claim from the Mrwetyana family which was being looked at by lawyers.

Botha is serving life in prison after pleading guilty to raping and killing Uyinene. He received a life sentence for murder, two life sentences on both counts of rape, and five years for defeating the ends of justice. The five-year sentence will run concurrently, and he will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.

After 6 years of marriage, Zoleka Mandela and her hubby call it quits.

They have been married for six years and it seemed their fairytale marriage would never end.

Yet Zoleka recently announced her separation on Instagram from husband Thierry Bashala, saying it’s taken her two years to leave a relationship that “no longer serves” her.

“Leaving someone you once loved, for eight long years feels like it completely unhinges your entire life until you realize that it’s sparked self-discovery, inner peace and has set you on a path of self-love. It’s taken me two years to leave a relationship that no longer serves me, one that has eroded (for far too many years) my self-esteem, independence, my mental and emotional state,” she wrote.

Zoleka once shared on social media on how they met at a clothing store where Thierry followed her around pretending to be trying on jeans.

Now the fairytale is all over.

“Over the years, I’ve continued to fall in habit and have tied my sense of worth to things outside of me and placed it in the hands of others. Leaving someone you once loved, reaffirms your strengths, it leaves you feeling more liberated and forces you to look into yourself and to move on even when you’re more comfortable staying in a relationship that (for the worst part) leaves you feeling invisible and undervalued … because you have a fear of abandonment and a fear of being alone,” she continued.

Zoleka says she is leaving her marriage “to live a life that is more true to me, to shift the power back from the relationship I have long left, back to me”.She goes on to says, “I have left someone that I once loved for eight whole years, because I need to learn to be alone, to work on myself harder than any other relationship, to recognize and accept my weaknesses, to forgive myself and to finally celebrate my FREEDOM.”

The two married in 2014 and Zoleka has five children, two with her estranged husband, with her last-born being born in 2019.

Senzo Meyiwa’s daughter Namhla goes to school without any food

Senzo Meyiwa’s daughter Namhla goes to school without any food

Retired soccer player Brilliant Khuzwayo has failed his dead friend’s daughter. In January, he promised to take care of Senzo Meyiwa’s daughter Namhla (14) but he has not come through for her.

Speaking to Daily Sun earlier this year, Namhla said life was difficult without her father.

“I sometimes go to school without any food in my lunch box. My grandmother and uncle try but it sometimes becomes too difficult for them.”

After the article was published, Brilliant came forward and told the SunTeam he would help Namhla.

He asked her to draw up a list of things she needed for school.

Speaking to the SunTeam this week in the presence of her gogo Ntombifuthi, Namhla said: “I was very happy when he asked me to draw up the list. I immediately made it and forwarded it to my uncle Sfiso. I asked for roll-up crayons, a pencil case, flip files, plastic covers, pens, sellotape and lead pencils.

“The items were needed in the first week of February but I never received them. Fortunately, I received help from other Good Samaritans and bought the items.”

The SunTeam was in constant contact with Brilliant to check if he was keeping his promises but he kept making excuses. Last month, he said he was on holiday.

He later said Namhla’s list was not clear. On another occasion, he said he needed to meet with Namhla’s uncle Sfiso.

Sfiso said he forwarded the list to Brilliant and the meeting he was speaking about had nothing to do with his promise.

Ntombifuthi said they had really hoped Brilliant would help Namhla.

“People saw a good side of him and he was praised all over but in reality, he raised our hopes for nothing,” she said.

Daily Sun tried numerous times to call Brilliant but his phone rang unanswered, and he had not responded to text messages by the time of going to print.

Two children die of suspected poisoning

Two children die of suspected poisoning

A mother is fighting for her life in an intensive care unit after she and her two children, who died an hour after supper, were apparently poisoned.

Sindiswa Moloi, 33, from Katlehong in Ekurhuleni slipped into a coma and was admitted at a hospital in Alberton following suspected poisoning which killed her two children Nkanyezi, 11, and Michelle, 8.

The two were certified dead near their Tshongweni Section home in Katlehong on Thursday evening – about an hour after eating supper.

Moloi’s family suspects that a very close family relative may be behind the alleged poisoning incident.

Police spokesperson Capt Lesetja Mathobela said two inquest dockets have been opened.

“We have not yet made arrests because we are waiting for the laboratory results to confirm if what was found on the food they ate was indeed poison,” said Mathobela yesterday.

Mathobela said Moloi’s husband was taken in for questioning after he admitted to the police that he cooked the food but did not eat it himself. He was later released after being interrogated.

He said after Moloi’s husband’s release, he was also admitted into a different hospital after he allegedly also consumed food with poison.

“He is not in a critical condition. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Moloi’s cousin Beverley Mofokeng, who was among the first to arrive at the scene, said: “Just after 7pm, the first child – Nkanyezi – began to feel sick.”

She said the incident happened around an hour after the family had supper.

“While they were waiting for the neighbour to drive Nkanyezi to hospital, Moloi also collapsed and she and her son began discharging froth from their mouths,” Mofokeng said.

Within minutes, Michelle also collapsed with froth coming out of her mouth.

“The children took their last breath lying down, while their mother was rushed to hospital where she was admitted in the intensive care unit upon arrival and her husband was there watching,” said Mofokeng.

Sibongile Letele, Moloi’s mother, said she got a call about the incident on Thursday night while she was in Soweto, where she currently lives.

“My relatives called me around 9pm and told me that I should come to Katlehong because my daughter was being taken to hospital and her children had died at the neighbour’s yard while waiting for emergency services,” she said.

Letele said she gave her daughter Moloi and her husband her Katlehong house two years ago after they moved out of a rented apartment in Johannesburg due to financial struggles.

But she said she had begged her daughter to come back home with the children because, as a mother, she could tell that Sindiswa was no longer happy with something, even though she had been very secretive about it.

“Just before this incident happened I begged her to come back home, I don’t know how I will tell her that her children have died when she wakes up from the coma,” said Letele.
