I owe nobody an explanation, whatsoever: Kelly fumes over Senzo Meyiwa's death ahead of her TV Show

Kelly Khumalo has grown a thick skin over the years. But she’s had no choice but to do so as the award-winning singer and actress has had her name dragged through the mud on several occasions.

Synonymous with controversy, especially where her love life is concerned, she is regularly trolled on social media.

We chatted shortly after Showmax announced “Life with Kelly Khumalo” would be debuting on the streaming platform in August.

Having done “Rolling with Kelly Khumalo” on e.tv a few years back, reality TV is a familiar playground for her.

On her return, she said: “I don’t think I decided. This was decided upon me by the power above, I think. I didn’t even think I would do a reality show again until last year when I was approached by The BarLeader and they handle their story with so much dignity, I had no choice but to be a part of this.”

She added: “I don’t want people to think I’m setting the record straight. That’s not what this show is about. I owe nobody an explanation, whatsoever.

Kelly has been the target of the public’s outrage and criticism, and has been at the forefront of widespread speculation surrounding Senzo’s murder.

In her video, the singer said she had stayed silent about the matter for many years, but she could no longer sweep things under the carpet.

“The matter of my daughter’s father needs to be put to an end. It has been six years. I have been a victim of this matter for many years and I am tired. I am going to speak. I am no longer afraid of speaking.”

City Press reported last year that the police now believe one of the people present in the house where Senzo was gunned down, is the culprit and that everyone present lied to police about who really killed the former Orlando Pirates goal keeper.

In a lengthy audio recording, obtained by City Press, a senior executive in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) tells a member of Meyiwa’s family that the police will again question those who were in the house at the time of Meyiwa’s murder.

The executive is heard saying that the people who were in the house when Meyiwa was gunned down lied when they made their original statements to the police in saying that a robbery had taken place.

“The crucial evidence was lost ages ago and all the witnesses who were in the house at the time of the shooting lied when they said there was an armed robbery when Senzo was fatally shot,” says the NPA executive in the recording.

The controversial musician who has been accused of having a dark cloud hovering above her and haunting all her boyfriends and past ones, with 2 having died already, says she will use the show broadcast her version of her story.

“The premise of this show is to tell my story through my own lens. I’m not rectifying anything or trying to win people over or to check people’s perception of me. No. I’m telling my own story in my own voice rather than my story being told by people who don’t even know me.”

Shooting of Kelly Khumalo’s reality show began before the Covid-19 lockdown and resumed under Level 3.

In being a fly-on-the-wall, viewers will get to witness what goes on in her everyday life and the people who are a huge part of it.

Khumalo shared: “They will see the spiritual process, my healing process based on everything I’ve been through in my life; and, childhood traumas.”

“People are going to experience me, in the studio, for the new music that’s coming out; people are also going to experience the business side of me as I venture into the alcohol business. It’s a new world for me altogether. I’m learning as I go.”

Interestingly, she launched her gin, Controversy, just before the lockdown in March. Her album, “Undithatha Kancinci”, is coming out in October.

She laughed: “Even recently, we were putting the billboard up on Monday just as alcohol was banned (again). So it’s been quite hectic. It hit me blind.”

Covid-19 hasn’t made life easy for anyone. As an artist, Khumalo is still navigating her way through many hurdles triggered by the global pandemic.

“To be quite honest, it’s been very tough,” she admitted. “With our industry literally being shut down and no one being certain of what the future holds and not being able to make the income that we are used to is worrying to me and a lot of people.”

While she has applied for a relief fund, like many others in the entertainment sector, she is not holding her breath on it making a huge difference when it does arrive.

She said: “I’m still waiting. I’ve not received the money as yet. Whichever way, I’m not counting on it because the amount of money they are giving out doesn’t cover what I’ve lost.”

“I would not even lie to you, I’m still trying to find my feet. I do what I can when I can. At the end of the day, this is so new. Even with the online shows, it’s quite an intricate process that a whole lot of us are trying to get our heads around,” Khumalo continued.

On the show, viewers also get to witness her wrestle with the dilemma of whether or not to send her kids to school.

She also gave the production house carte blanche to shoot this series.

She explained: “As far as I’m concerned, this is my reality and I’m happy with it. My only concern is to be true to myself and live the best life I possibly can.”

“Life with Kelly Khumalo” is available on Showmax from Thursday, August 6.

Shocking details concerning Bob Mabena's death emerge

Legendary radio and television broadcaster Bob Mabena was in the middle of organising the launch party for the album he had released two weeks before his death yesterday.

Mabena died of cardiac arrest at the age of 51, sending a massive shockwave through SA’s entertainment industry and fans who have followed his 31-year career in showbiz.

Mabena released compilation album Jammers House

Volume 1 two weeks ago to commemorate his birthday.

Invitations for the launch party that was planned to take place in the next two weeks were meant to be sent out this week.

According to marketing manager Caroline Morabe at Gallo Record Company, Mabena wanted to invite 30 to 40 of his closest industry friends and colleagues to honour the moment. The event was going to broadcast on Zoom for 45 minutes to the public.

Morabe added that they kept pushing back the launch since the album dropped digitally because they were waiting for physical copies to arrive – that happened last Tuesday.

“Our last conversation was that ‘don’t forget to send the list of names’ and he said he was still compiling it. It was going to be an intimate conversation about his career in music and what led him to this album,” Morabe recalled.

“It was going to feature key people that have always been in his life and supported him. It was continuing in that birthday celebration and just to say thanks to those people that have played a part in his career. We held it back because we wanted those people to have a CD copy first.”

The 12-track album featured nostalgic tunes such as Sing It Back.

“It was a compilation of old house school music – some of the greatest house tracks,” Morabe said.

“He was a lover of old school music and it was a way of him commemorating those big hits. There was an element of celebrating were house music came from with the album. He was paying homage to a sound that made him a household name.”

Two weeks ago, Mabena said about the album: “Each track is guaranteed to evoke fantastic memories of the early freedom years and the liberation of South Africa’s airwaves that saw the likes of household house music DJs such as DJ Fresh, DJ Monde, DJ Iggy Smalls dominate the house music genre in South Africa.”

Mabena, who made his name at Radio Bop in 1992, also worked on radio stations such as Metro FM, Kaya FM and Highveld Stereo. He was currently hosting the breakfast show on Power FM.

He took SA by storm as the host of popular Studio Mix with Melanie Son (now Bala).

Mabena was the programmes manager for the MSG Group which includes Capricorn FM in Polokwane.

“It is with deep grief and pain that we announce that POWER 98.7 Breakfast host, Mr Bob Mabena, passed away this afternoon, Monday 10 August 2020, from cardiac arrest,” the statement from Power FM read.

“The family is coming to terms with his passing and respectfully requests the public to afford them the appropriate space. Further details will be communicated in due course.”

Doctor Khumalo, who teamed up with Mabena for their 1990s hit song Get Funky, was at pains yesterday to comprehend the sad news that his bosom friend was no more.

“Eish, my broer, it is true that Bob is gone,” he said drawing a deep breath of intense sorrow.

“Radio will never be the same. You know broer, I still refuse to believe Bob is no more.”

Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung, a friend of Mabena’s, said: “Condolences to his family and children. Bob was a true brother and great man with great integrity.”

The Queen star Sibusisiwe Jili has paid tribute to her mother, calling her the biggest role model who taught her not to give up on her goals.

Sibusisiwe Jili says her mother’s love and support paved the way for her

Sibusisiwe, who plays the role of Georgina on the hit soapie, told TshisaLIVE that her mom helped her deal with struggles, advising her to change the plan but not the goal.

“My mom taught me not to give up when I’m faced with a problem. She says only you know your goals, if your plan changes then go ahead and change the plan but never change the goal.

Sibusisiwe said dedication would also separate people who are in it for the fame and those who are in it for the art.

She said another way she deals with the difficult times is to meditate.

“I’m a person who meditates a lot because I don’t live with my family, they are in KZN and I live in Johannesburg. I communicate with my mom a lot on the phone and sometimes when the heart is heavy you need something to encourage you.”

Sibusisiwe said meditation and yoga remind her of the peace that she left at home.

“Life gets blurry with everything that happens around us and people that we meet and we think that maybe I should change the goal – no honey, change the plan but not the goal,” she said.
